The Winnipeg International Airport, one of several big terminals being built across Canada by the federal transport department, was officially opened today.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
There were no eyebrows raised in Hamiota last week when Garth Strachan’s host rink of Ross Fraser, Buck Matheson and Jim Stevens captured the Zone 11 Consols championship with a win over Oak River’s Ed Shamray in the final. The Shamray rink had won the B side of the draw, while Strachan was the A-side champ.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Don Mitchell of Douglas, one of the pioneers of performance testing in the province, has been honoured with the Premier Purebred Breeder Award from Manitoba Agriculture. He was presented with the award last night at the opening of the Manitoba Beef Cattle Seminar at the Agricultural Extension Centre.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
It may come as a surprise to some, but the city does plow residential sidewalks and this week, 10 locations were added to the snow-clearing route, almost doubling the time it takes to do the work. The current route, at 117.2 kilometres, has been expanded to 221 kilometres.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
City planners hope that by working with the Brandon School Division, they can get more students to ride the city’s transit system, which they hope will help eat away at the $1.2-million deficit Brandon Transit is expected to post in 2004. One step would be to get junior high students riding the bus to get to and from industrial arts and home economics classes offered at only a few city schools. The school division estimates it will cost $55,630 per year to use its own buses to take students to class. Currently, parents are responsible for getting their kids to these classes.
TEN YEARS AGO
Four additional doctors have agreed to join the Prairie Mountain Health region, alleviating some of the pressure from a system treading dangerously close to low staffing levels. Killarney, Deloraine, Minnedosa and Swan River will all get one family physician in the upcoming months.
December statistics posted by the Canadian Real Estate Association show that the housing market in Brandon ended 2013 on a strong note. There were a total of 31 sales of single detached homes in the city in December — a huge 72 per cent jump over a weak December in 2012. Any December sales figure above the 30-unit mark is considered quite strong by historical standards.
