MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook exited Tuesday’s game against the Dallas Stars with an apparent right-leg injury.
Newhook crashed feet-first into the end boards in noticeable pain after he was tripped by Stars defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin 4:10 into the second period.
The Canadiens, who trailed 5-0 entering the third period, said Newhook was being evaluated and would not return.
Team physicians stepped onto the ice to assist Newhook, who needed help getting to the dressing room.
Lyubushkin was assessed a minor penalty for hooking on the play.
Newhook was enjoying a strong start to his season with six goals and assists in 17 games while picking up duties on Montreal’s penalty kill.
The 24-year-old from St. John’s joined the Canadiens via trade from the Colorado Avalanche before the 2023-24 season.
