5:40 p.m.

Canada’s men’s hockey team has defeated Switzerland 5-1.

Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists each, while Macklin Celebrini, Sidney Crosby and Thomas Harley also scored for Canada.

The Canadians will face off against France on Sunday to wrap preliminary round play.

5:01 p.m.

Canada’s Stephen Gogolev has finished fifth in men’s figure skating after posting the second-best free skate.

Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov delivered a surprise gold, ahead of Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama in silver and compatriot Shun Sato in bronze.

American Ilia Malinin, the leader after the short program and overwhelming favourite, unravelled in the free skate and plummeted to eighth overall.

4:45 p.m.

Team Canada is up 3-1 on Switzerland in men’s hockey after two periods of play, with Macklin Celebrini scoring his second in as many games at the Olympics tournament.

Canada is outshooting Switzerland 27-16 after 40 minutes of play, with each side recording a power-play goal in the first period.

The game is the first at the tournament started by Washington Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson, with St. Louis Blues’ Jordan Binnington starting Canada’s 5-0 win against Czechia on Thursday.

4:04 p.m.

Skeleton athlete Josip Brusic has completed his Olympic debut, finishing 24th in the men’s event at the Games.

Brusic, from Okotoks, Alberta, finished roughly nine seconds behind the eventual winner and gold medallist, Matt Weston from Great Britain.

German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer won silver and bronze, respectively.

3:52 p.m.

The Canadian men’s hockey team leads Switzerland 2-1 after the first period.

Canada jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Connor McDavid and Thomas Harley before the Swiss side answered with one from Pius Suter.

The Canadians outshot the Swiss 13-10 in the first frame.

3:46 p.m.

Canada’s men’s curling team has defeated Sweden 8-6.

The team of Brad Jacobs, Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant and Ben Hebert have now improved to 3-0 in round robin play.

It comes after a 6-3 win over the United States on Friday morning.

2:30 p.m.

Canada’s Josip Brusic is ranked 23rd in men’s skeleton after three heats.

Great Britain’s Matt Weston and Germany’s Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer round out the top three so far, and the fourth run will determine medal standings.

Brusic, of Okotoks, Alberta, is making his Olympic debut.

1:36 p.m.

Sweden has become the first team to advance from the quarterfinals in the Olympic women’s hockey tournament.

The team beat Czechia 2-0, with a goal from forward Hanna Olsson scoring in the second period, followed by Ohio State forward Hilda Svensson’s late empty-net goal.

Canada’s elimination round gets underway tomorrow with a match against Germany.

12:55 p.m.

Canadian women are sitting in 15th and 20th after two heats in the Olympic skeleton competition.

North Vancouver’s Jane Channell posted the 15th-best score in the first heat and the 17th in the second for 15th overall.

Twenty-one-year-old Hallie Clarke sits 20th in her Olympic debut, well off the form that saw her become the youngest world champion in 2024.

The final two runs of the competition take place Saturday.

11:53 a.m.

Canada’s Ted-Jan Bloemen is wrapping up his storied Olympic long-track speed skating career with a ninth-place finish in the men’s 10,000-metre event.

The 39-year-old crossed the finish line well behind eventual gold-medal winner Metoděj Jílek of Czechia, who was in his pairing, but smiled broadly and accepted congratulations from trackside as his wife and children watched in the stands.

Bloemen captured the gold medal in the event at PyeongChang 2018 and won a silver in the men’s 5,000-metre race. He has won multiple world championships and World Cup medals wearing the Maple Leaf.

10:59 a.m.

Canada’s Rachel Homan has dropped a 9-8 decision to American Tabitha Peterson in women’s curling round-robin play.

Canada held an 8-7 lead heading into the 10th end, but Peterson made an open draw for a deuce and the victory.

Canada fell to 1-1 with the loss, while the Americans improved to 2-1.

9:30 a.m.

Calgary’s Adam Runnalls is the highest-placed Canadian in the men’s biathlon 10 km sprint event at the Milan Cortina Olympics, in 31st.

Ottawa’s Zachary Connelly finished 48th, while Logan Pletz of Regina was 55th, and Jasper Fleming of Squamish, B.C. crossed the line in 80th.

France’s Quentin Fillon Maillet topped the podium, while athletes from Norway captured the silver and bronze medals.

8:47 a.m.

Captain Marie-Philip Poulin returned to practice today after missing Canada’s final two preliminary-round games with a lower-body injury.

She sat out a 5-0 loss to the United States — Canada’s worst defeat and first shutout in Olympic women’s hockey.

Poulin’s return comes a day after she skated on her own, and a day before Canada plays Germany in the quarterfinal knockout round.

8:28 a.m.

Canadian figure skating pair Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps have practised for the first time at the Milan Cortina Games since an injury nearly derailed their Olympic hopes.

Stellato-Dudek wouldn’t reveal details of the Jan. 30 training injury or how it occurred, but the 42-year-old said it was not a concussion.

She and Deschamps withdrew from the team event but will compete in the individual pairs competition beginning Sunday, where Stellato-Dudek is poised to become the oldest female figure skater in nearly a century to compete at the Olympics.

8:10 a.m.

The Canadian women’s curling team is back in action at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

Rachel Homan and her Ottawa-based team have opened their game against Tabitha Peterson and the United States.

Canada began the Olympics with a 10-4 win over Denmark, while the Americans are 1-and-1 in round-robin play following a win over South Korea and a loss to Sweden.

7:45 a.m.

Canadian Audrey McManiman won’t advance to the quarterfinals of the women’s snowboard cross event.

The 31-year-old from Saint-Ambroise-de-Kildare, Que., has been eliminated after finishing third in her 1/8 final race.

She finished 11th in the event in Beijing.

7:15 a.m.

It’s a top-10 finish for Canadian cross-country skier Thomas Stephen, who has placed ninth in the men’s 10km interval-start race.

But the day belongs to Norway’s Johannes Hosflot Klaebo, who has won an eighth gold medal in cross-country skiing, tying an all‑time Winter Games record.

The 29‑year‑old’s victory is his third gold at the 2026 games.

France’s Mathis Desloges won silver, Norway’s Einar Hedegart captured bronze, and Canada’s Remi Drolet landed in 19th spot.

5:35 a.m.

The Canadian men’s curling team, skipped by Brad Jacobs, defeated American Daniel Casper 6-3 on Friday morning at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.

Jacobs, vice Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant and Ben Hebert scored two points in the fourth end on a brilliant shot for a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The Canadians navigated a tight port and chipped a rock sideways just enough to move an American stone off the button.
