McEwen was alone in third place at 3-1 and Calvert was next at 2-1. The top three teams in each nine-team pool will qualify for the playoffs.

In the morning draw, Canada’s unbeaten Brad Jacobs rolled to an 8-2 win over Ontario’s Jayden King. Jacobs won gold at the Milan Cortina Olympics last month in Italy. King (3-2) bounced back in the evening draw to beat winless Derek Samagalski (0-5) of Nunavut 8-3 in nine ends.

Six-time Brier champion Brad Gushue matched Jacobs at 4-0 in Pool A with an 8-5 win in nine ends over fellow Newfoundland and Labrador skip Nathan Young in the evening session. Young slipped to 2-3.

Tyler Smith (2-3) of Prince Edward Island scored two in the 10th end to edge Kelly Knapp (1-3) of Saskatchewan 8-6, and Jean-Michel Ménard of Quebec stole two in the 10th end to beat Kendal Thompson of Nova Scotia 8-5. Menard improved to 3-1 and moved into third place behind Jacobs and Gushue. Thompson slipped to 1-3.

In other morning results, Nova Scotia’s Thompson downed Young 11-2, Smith’s P.E.I. crew defeated Nunavut’s Samagalski 10-5, and Ménard scored two in the 10th to beat Saskatchewan’s Knapp 8-7.
