WINNIPEG – Josh Morrissey scored 1:49 into overtime to become the highest-scoring defenceman in franchise history as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in front of 14, 294 at Canada Life Centre on Saturday.

Morrissey’s game-winning goal gave him 417 career points, surpassing the retired Dustin Byfuglien for the franchise record. He had tied the mark earlier in the night with an assist on the game-tying goal.

Gabriel Vilardi and Mark Scheifele scored in regulation for the Jets, who extended their point streak to six games. Scheifele added a pair of assists for a three-point night.

Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves to secure the victory for Winnipeg.

Linus Karlsson had a goal and an assist, and Liam Ohgren also scored for Vancouver. Teddy Blueger had two assists. Kevin Lankinen stopped 32 shots for the Canucks.

The victory also clinched the season series against Vancouver, improving their head-to-head record to 9-2-0 in their last 11 games against the Canucks.

Morrissey was making his return from an upper-body injury suffered at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

TAKEAWAYS

Jets: Winnipeg showed resilience by erasing two one-goal deficits while outshooting Vancouver 35-23.

Canucks: Vancouver’s depth forwards paved the way, with Karlsson, Blueger and Ohgren combining for all the offence. But the club was unable to hold off the late push by Winnipeg, securing a single point.

KEY MOMENT

Trailing 2-1 late in the third period, Vilardi buried his 24th goal of the season at the 15:12 mark to tie the game and force overtime. Vilardi has scored a goal in all three matchups against the Canucks this season.

KEY STAT

Scheifele reached the 30-goal mark for the season when he capitalized on an ill-advised icing call by Canucks forward Brock Boeser late in the second period.

UP NEXT

Canucks: Host the Ottawa Senators on Monday.

Jets: Host the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday.
