CHICAGO – The Vancouver Whitecaps’ Major League Soccer road game against the Fire scheduled for Thursday night has been postponed due to poor air quality in Chicago caused by wildfires in northern Ontario.
The league and the two teams said in a joint statement that the decision was made to prioritize the health of players, staff and fans.
The game will instead take place on Oct. 6, with tickets for the original date remaining valid.
The Whitecaps were looking to return to MLS action after a long layoff due to the World Cup.
Vancouver will instead get another week off, with their next game scheduled for Wednesday at Cincinnati.
Thursday’s game was meant to mark the MLS debut of veteran Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, and his reunion with former Bayern Munich teammate and current Whitecaps star Thomas Muller.
The Whitecaps entered the World Cup break leading the Western Conference and a point behind MLS-leading Nashville.
