OTTAWA – Shane Pinto’s shootout winner helped the Ottawa Senators salvage a rough outing with a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators Saturday night.
The Predators took a delay-of-game penalty for a puck over glass with 13 seconds remaining in regulation providing the Senators the perfect opportunity, but a stagnant Ottawa power play was unable to capitalize. Ottawa went 1-for-6 on the night with the man advantage.
Tim Stutzle and Drake Batherson — who tied the game at 18:37 of the third period — also scored for the Senators (4-1-0). Linus Ullmark turned away 16 shots.
Jonathan Marchessault and Ross Colton scored for Nashville (2-1-2), while Matt Murray made 18 stops.
Saturday’s game concluded a three-game Eastern Canada road trip for the Predators.
Trailing 2-1 to start the final period, the Senators didn’t generate their first shot until 16:06 of the third, but just over two minutes later Batherson scored the tying goal with Ullmark on the bench for an extra attacker.
Ottawa cut the Predators lead in half with a power-play goal of their own midway through the second period. Stutzle took a pass from Dylan Cozens and beat Murray blocker side.
Ottawa had a 54-second two-man advantage later in the period but could not take advantage.
Nashville took a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Colton opened the scoring after taking a pass out front and beating Ullmark high glove side.
The Predators made it 2-0 with a power-play goal. Steven Stamkos found Marchessault down low and beat Ullmark five-hole for his first of the season.
Andre Burakovsky made his Senators debut after missing the first four games due to injury.
Defenceman Jayden Struble made his Nashville debut Saturday. Struble was acquired Friday from the Montreal Canadiens. Centre Vitali Pinchuk made his NHL debut for the Predators.
KEY STAT
Stamkos, at the age of 36 years, 245 days became the eighth-oldest player in NHL history to record a season-opening point streak of at least five games.
KEY MOMENT
The Senators had a span of 22:21 between shots-on-goal from the second period carrying over to the third.
