OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators have signed head coach Travis Green to a multi-year contract extension, the NHL club announced on Monday.

The deal will run through the 2030-31 season.

The 55-year-old Green was named the Senators’ 14th head coach in franchise history on May 7, 2024, having then signed a deal through 2027-28. His team is off to a 6-3-0 start to the season.

“The structure that’s in place helps us build the identity, and Travis and the staff continue to get the most out of players,” general manager Steve Staios told reporters. “There’s always ups and downs but I just watch the growth of this group. … High level of accountability with our players, built great trust with them.

“But also the lines of communication as well. So I think those are the qualities that I was anticipating that we were getting a couple of years ago (when Green was hired). And not only are we getting it, but I do think that Travis is continuing to grow as well.”

Assistants Nolan Baumgartner, Ben Sexton and Mike Yeo as well as goaltending coach Justin Peters also received multi-year contract extensions.

Green, from Castlegar, B.C., earned his 95th victory behind the Ottawa bench in a 2-1 shootout win over the New York Islanders on Thursday, moving into a tie for fifth on the franchise’s all-time list.

Green has led the Senators to the playoffs in each of his first two seasons after the team missed the post-season for seven consecutive years.

“I truly believe that our team can succeed and win long term. And you gotta enjoy your team. You gotta enjoy coaching the players. And that’s a big one as well,” Green said. “I’ve said it many times that we have a group that wants to be coached. And we enjoy coaching them.

“Our staff thoroughly enjoys coaching these players. And obviously you’ve got to like where you’re at. Two years now, I love living here, I love the city, I loved the team, and I want to win. And for me, it was an easy decision.”

Previously, Green coached in the Vancouver Canucks’ system from 2013 to 2021, including four-plus seasons as head coach at the NHL level.

The Canucks posted a 141-159-35 record under Green and made the playoffs once, when they advanced to the second round of the 2019-20 post-season before losing to Vegas in seven games.

He was fired 25 games into the 2021-22 season along with general manager Jim Benning with the Canucks sitting at 8-15-2.

Just before joining Ottawa, Green posted an 8-12-1 record as interim head coach of the New Jersey Devils to close the 2023-24 season after Lindy Ruff was fired.

Green played 14 NHL seasons before entering coaching. He recorded 455 points (193 goals, 262 assists) and 764 penalty minutes over 970 regular-season NHL games with the New York Islanders, Anaheim, Phoenix/Arizona, Toronto and Boston.
