SIXTY YEARS AGO
Honours were given to four members of the Brandon city police force last night as the city recognized their years of service. Presented with the Canadian Association of Police Chiefs medals were Chief H.H. Collister, a veteran of 37 years as a policeman; Sgt. A.C. Goucher, 30 years; Det. Sgt. George Tyerman, 25 years; and Const. A.W. Robb, 20 years.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Brandon was one of the areas in southwest Manitoba that experienced the first hail storm of the year yesterday. Hailstones ranged in size from a pea to about one inch in diameter. There was 1.19 inches of rain.
FORTY YEARS AGO
British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said today Argentina’s response to the latest Falkland Islands peace proposal doesn’t look very encouraging, and British newspapers reported she has already decided to invade the islands.

The Manitoba Summer Fair will be the launching pad for a California company making its Canadian debut of bungee jumping.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Two Brandon women have been honoured as being among the best and brightest of Manitoba’s business community. Barb Webber, owner of Shades Above Co. Ltd., was named Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in the home-based business category. Also honoured was Barb Bragg. The owner of The Learning Company won her award in the contribution to community category.
TEN YEARS AGO
Tourism Westman is celebrating National Tourism Week this week by challenging tourists with the new Westman Discovery Passport initiative. The Westman Passports are free and promote 22 different museums in the region. Visitors collect a stamp at each of the different museums throughout Westman. After collecting four or more stamps, they can enter to win prizes, including The Grand Curator prize amounting to more than $1,000.
On Thursday afternoon, smoke was reported in Riding Mountain National Park, 25 kilometres north-northeast of the town of Rossburn, officials said. A Parks Canada fire management team was sent to the area to investigate on the ground and by air. As of yesterday, there was no immediate danger to people or property.
