Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev today offered to withdraw offensive weapons from Cuba if the Americans would withdraw their missiles from Turkey. The Kennedy administration appeared today to be preparing the ground for possible bombing or invasion of Cuba unless it starts dismantling its Russian-made missiles and their bases soon.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
The southeast corner of the province received about two inches of snow last night, while Brandon got its first taste of winter with only one inch of the white stuff.
The Defence Department is examining plans to get a Canadian peacekeeping force into Vietnam. It could turn out to be the largest such force Canada has ever sent abroad, numbering up to 5,000 men.

After a one-year layoff, the Orange Crush Talent Search for Kids is back with a new twist. “It’s not exactly the way it was, but I think it is going to be stylized very uniquely,” says organizer and Trails West Motor Inn owner Heidi Howarth. The long-running children’s talent contest was suspended last year after changes to the Manitoba liquor laws meant Howarth would be unable to sell alcohol to adults watching the contest.“You had to really weigh the cost factor, and there just wasn’t enough time to put the whole package together,” Howarth says.
TEN YEARS AGO
A Brandon University religion professor has been awarded a five-year research grant, worth more than $280,000. Alison Marshall said she is “thrilled and honoured” to receive the funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Whether it’s a zombie doctor, zombie hippie or zombie bride, there’s a good chance of seeing the walking dead roaming the streets this Halloween. Spirit Halloween manager Lynn Defoort said the undead costumes have been snapped up by revellers of all ages. “They don’t just buy a costume, they buy the teeth, the makeup, the jewelry,” Defoort said. For boys especially, Defoort said “the creepier the better.”
