SIXTY YEARS AGO
Brandon’s population is 28,638, an increase of 694 over the 1961 census. The increase is about 1.25 per cent per year.
A $90,000 grant for an addition to Rivers Collegiate has been approved by the treasury board.
Brandon City Council passed a motion in committee-as-a-whole calling for tenders for concessions at Curran Park and the Municipal Golf Course.

Industry and Commerce Minister Len Evans announced today five family units of low-rental housing for Melita at a cost of $98,000 and seven family units for Deloraine at a cost of $120,000.
Canada’s largest egg show, held in conjunction with Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, was won by Springhill Colony of Neepawa, with Gerald Raes of Deloraine taking the reserve grand champion.
Teachers with 25 years service should be able to retire at age 55 with full pension benefits, delegates to the annual meeting of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society decided.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 69 rejected the city’s final contract offer last night and a strike vote is expected to be held shortly.

Cries of “Look, it’s the Queen!” can be heard every few minutes as one of Canadian comedy’s most well-known women and her entourage bustle around the petting zoo section of the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair at the Keystone Centre. Luba Goy, a member of CBC’s “Royal Canadian Air Farce” comedy troupe, donned demure black pumps, an eggplant-coloured coat and a sparkling tiara for a taping of her Queen schtick at the Winter Fair yesterday. Through take after take, the seemingly tireless Goy came nose to nose with a sow, spoke to a llama, was nuzzled by a cow and threw a perogy as a symbolic opening of the fair.
TEN YEARS AGO
A provincial office in Brandon that assists parents with subsidized daycare applications is moving to Winnipeg, a decision some say will hurt immigrants and low-income parents.
