FRIDAY

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

• 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — Dance and socialize at Central Community Centre (529 Fourth St., Brandon) on Friday afternoons. Music by Prairie Fire. Admission is $10 and includes lunch. For more information, call 204-729-9301.

• 7:30 p.m. — Full Flannel Jacket at the Eastside Eatery (1541 Richmond Ave. East). Tickets are $10, which includes $5 off food purchases that can be used at the eatery any time before the event. Advance tickets can be bought at the eatery and will also be available for $15 at the door (with no food voucher).

• 7:30 to 11 p.m. — Steppin’ Out Old Tyme dance is coming up at the Royal Canadian Legion #3 (560 13th St. East, Brandon) with live music by The Three Berts, with Murray McIntyre. Legion dances will be held Fridays in April, May and June. Admission is $15. For more information, call Barb at 204 728-5636.

• Friday to Sunday — Six sopranos have been selected as finalists for the 46th Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition in Voice to be held in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at Brandon University (QEII Music Building, Room 1-60). On Friday at 7:30 p.m., there will be a Gala Concert at Lorne Watson Recital Hall. Ticket prices: Saturday day pass, $30 for adults, $15 for students and seniors; Gala Concert Series, $25 for adults and $12.50 for students and seniors; weekend pass, $50 for adults, $25 for students and seniors.

SATURDAY

• 10 a.m. — Spring Kings Chess Tournament at Shoppers Mall (1570 18th St., Brandon). Registration fees are $15 for adults and $10 for children. There’ll be prizes, trophies, medals and cash. For more information, call 204-441-0725.

• 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Brandon Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation hosts the first annual Women, Entrepreneurs and Community mini-conference, a casual conference that will feature the stories of several local women entrepreneurs. Lunch and a morning snack will be provided. To register, email community@bnrc.ca.

• 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Earth Day group ride at the Riverbank Discovery Centre (545 Conservation Dr., Brandon). This is a slow family-friendly social bike ride at a gentle 10 to 15 kilometres per hour pace that won’t leave anyone behind. Total distance will be 15 km, from the Riverbank through three city parks, where riders will help with Earth Day activities such as community cleanups. The ride will end at Rideau Park, but cyclists can complete the loop by riding back to the Discovery Centre. With stops, the ride is expected to take up to three hours.

• 7 to 10 p.m. — Sunset Rotary Club of Brandon presents the 11th annual Brandon Beer Tasting Festival in the Imperial Ballroom of the Victoria Inn Hotel and Convention Centre (3550 Victoria Ave., Brandon). Tickets are $35 and available at Brandon Liquor Marts and at the door of the event. Samples included and a light lunch served. Proceeds support the YWCA Westman Women’s Shelter and other local charities.

• 7:30 p.m. — Stampeders in Concert, Celebrating 50 Years, at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium (205 20th St., Brandon). The Stampeders were truly the country’s international musical ambassadors, touring more extensively in Canada and overseas than any other Canadian group during that time. Tickets are $82.95 and available online at wmca.ca, at the auditorium box office, or by calling 204-728-9510.

SUNDAY

• 1:30 p.m. — The 44th annual Westman Juried Art Show, presented by the Carberry Plains Arts Council Group at the Carberry Community Memorial Hall (224 Second Ave., Carberry). Check out a variety of artwork entries by talented artists around the Westman Region. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Opening ceremony starts at 2 p.m.

MONDAY

• 1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Card Club meets Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

• 6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place every Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

TUESDAY

• 5 to 8 p.m. — Community Game Night at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). Toymasters and Chez Angela provide the games, you provide the people. Try a new game you’ve never played or pick one of your favourites.

WEDNESDAY

• 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — The Brandon Embroiderers meet weekly to share their love of needlework, learn new skills and stitch together. All levels and abilities are welcome to attend. Call Dianne at 204-725-1445 or Darlene at 204-727-1624 for more information.

• 5 to 8 p.m. — Wednesday Knights at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). The Brandon Knights Chess Club joins Chez Angela on Wednesday evenings. Players of all skill levels are welcome.

AT THE CLUBS

• The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — Hatfield McCoy. $10 cover charge. This is an 18-plus event and photo identification is required.

• Lady of the Lake (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — Michelle Boudreau and the Wheat City Jug Band play roots and blues at 6 p.m. (free), followed by classic rock and country group Along for the Ride at 9 p.m.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

• April 27-30 — Mecca Productions presents “The Sound of Music” at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. for April 27-28, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on April 29, and 2 p.m. on April 30. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and students, and $20 for children 12 and under. MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

• Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — The only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of more than 200,000 gunners who served Canada. The museum’s collection consists of more than 65,000 artifacts and includes more than 170 artillery pieces and vehicles. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. The “In Service of Peace” exhibit continues at the museum until the end of May. The exhibit highlights Canada’s experience in peacekeeping and peacemaking.

• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). • Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — A “contemporary art gallery that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. Hours: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Phone 204-727-1036 or email: info@agsm.ca. Until June 3 — “The Long and the Short of It, Brandon Embroiderers.” Reception tonight at 7 p.m. In celebration of the group’s 25th anniversary, the exhibition showcases recent work by members of Brandon Embroiderers. Traditional and contemporary techniques will be featured, including blackwork, Hardanger, canvas work, cross stitch, crewel, goldwork, candlewicking, needle painting, ribbon and stumpwork. Today through June 17 — “Stimulus/Response” by The Drawn Together Collective. In this exhibition, the 10 current members of the collective respond to works written by women of the Canadian Prairies, from the quintessential world of Margaret Lawrence’s “Manawaka” to a coming-of-midlife memoir written by a childhood friend.

• Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023. Through April 29 — “The Geography of Home” featuring the mosaic and rug art work of Sharon Stobbe Loeppky. Opening reception is Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

• Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St.) — Exhibits include Manitoba telephone history, Brandon History Hall, the BJ Hales Gallery and the William G. • 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

• ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

AT THE EVANS THEATRE

• Friday through Sunday — “I Like Movies”: Socially inept 17-year-old cinephile Lawrence Kweller gets a job at a video store, where he forms a complicated friendship with his older female manager. Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $6.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• April 28-29 — Nifty Needlers will host a quilt show at First Baptist Church (3881 Park Ave. in Brandon) from 2 to 8 p.m. on April 28, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 29. Admission is $5.
