The Brandon Wheat Kings ran all over the Edmonton Oil Kings, but it wasn’t enough as Edmonton bounced back to win a 5-3 struggle that gave them the Western Canada junior hockey title and the Abbott Cup.

THIRTY YEARS AGO
Chris Kading is the latest Brandon resident to emerge from the Canadian Professional Golf Association’s certification program. The 26-year-old has earned his stripes and the right to call himself a full-time golf professional. Kading will join Tom Relf, the head pro at Minnedosa, in the purchase of Deer Ridge Golf Course this summer.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Premier Gary Doer surprised the Brandon Regional Health Authority with a special treat yesterday in the form of an extra $1 million to operate a new MRI that is arriving at the Brandon Regional Health Centre this fall. Doer also confirmed $3 million in funding for the magnetic resonance imaging machine and a $3-million tender for the construction of a 7,500-square-foot structure to house the new machine.
TEN YEARS AGO
To help address Brandon’s tight rental market, the city is looking at the idea of easing restrictions on secondary dwelling units and boarding houses. The city’s current vacancy rate is 0.2 per cent. The last time there was a healthy rental vacancy rate, according to the city, was in 1990, when it was at 3.1 per cent.
A Motown-influenced band with an international profile and a Brandon connection will be one of the headliners at the 29th annual Brandon Folk, Music and Art Festival. The Brandon Sun has learned Imaginary Cities will close the Saturday night show of the festival, which runs from July 26-28.
