SIXTY YEARS AGO
The cost of a driver’s licence in Manitoba will double on June 30. The fee for a private licence will increase to $4 from $2 for a two-year period, while chauffeur’s licences will increase from $4 to $6.
A two-man American team conquered 29,028-foot Mount Everest in the first attempt by United States mountaineers to scale the world’s highest peak.

Local balladeer Russ Gurr has recorded another batch of songs on Capital Records called “On Tour With Russ Gurr,” and he will be in a couple of Brandon music spots tomorrow to add his autograph to the album.

Metropolitan Toronto Police are satisfied seven-month-old Gary Murphy was not murdered at the Hospital For Sick Children late last month.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Families had less money in their pockets after taxes in 1991 than they did in 1990 or in 1980, Statistics Canada has found. Real after-tax income of the average family fell by 2.6 per cent to $42,612 in 1991, the second drop in a row after six straight increases during the 1980s.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Canada is staring at a shortage of up to one million skilled workers within five years, and Ottawa plans to work with provinces and territories to figure out how to attract replacements from abroad, Immigration Minister Denis Coderre said. Coderre said Canada needs to honour foreign credentials for professionals such as doctors, dentists and engineers so they are not forced to take menial jobs once they arrive here.
TEN YEARS AGO
Three new family medicine residents will start training and working in Brandon this July. As part of the provincial plan to train and recruit more doctors in rural Manitoba, a centre for rural medical education will be established in Brandon, which will include an associate dean of rural medicine.
Brandon’s Rosser ward councillor would like to see a requirement put in place regarding council members’ representation on committees. Coun. Corey Roberts will bring forward a motion at city council’s meeting on Monday to require councillors to serve on a minimum of three boards or committees.
