Brandon high school athletes literally had themselves a “field day” yesterday as they broke 29 records, equalled one and set an additional 13 in new events in the annual track and field meet. When the dust finally settled at the Kinsmen Stadium, Vincent Massey emerged with the championship.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Charming Lady, owned by Lance Lidster of Brandon, and Gaylabs Gabriel, owned by Cec Leech also of Brandon, were top dogs from the Brandon Retriever Club at the first licensed retriever field trial of the 1973 season held in Regina.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Great Western Days “White Hat Sale” at Murray Chev Olds has 1983 Citations selling for $10,470 and 1983 Cavaliers for $7,970.
Trevor Peters of Brandon won two events in the Canadian championship of the Young American Bowling Alliance in Winnipeg on the weekend.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
There will be splishing and splashing at the Keystone Pool this summer thanks to the continuing generosity of local business and service clubs. Several groups stepped in to pick up the slack when city council cut the south end pool from its budget three years ago.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
A group of Rivers residents is growing more and more certain that the town’s 16-bed hospital may soon morph into a personal care home, despite assurances to the contrary from the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority and the minister of health. No official will confirm the plan, but Assiniboine RHA CEO Penny Sorensen says the RHA will likely be looking at the feasibility of keeping each of its 20 hospitals open as acute-care facilities.
