TODAY

10:15 to 11 a.m. — Every Thursday throughout June will feature Storytimes with Michelle at the Brandon Public Library for preschoolers. Little ones can enjoy a story, song and craft. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

6 p.m. to 9 p.m. — BACE Cruise Night in Downtown Brandon takes place on Rosser Avenue between Sixth and 13th streets. People wishing to show their vehicles are encouraged to enter the event at the intersection of Rosser Avenue and 13th Street. Free to participants and spectators.

7 p.m. — The Westman Gardeners Club will meet at Central Community Centre (529 Fourth St.). Betty Braaksma will speak on Medieval Gardens. Become inspired by the beauty of the medieval garden to create your own “backyard Camelot.” Visitors welcome.

FRIDAY

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

10:30 to 11 a.m. — Every Friday is toddler time at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library. Join Robin for stories, songs and playtime. A parent or caregiver must attend. No registration is required.

5 to 8 p.m. — Brandon hosts a citywide yard sale. Sales west of 18th Street. Registration is closed. Yard sale locations and more details will be posted on the city’s website (brandon.ca).

SATURDAY

8:30 a.m. — The Kiwanis Club of Brandon hosts its Kar Derby No. 34. The Kar Derby is the Kiwanis club’s major family event and fundraiser. Please register your car or purchase a new kit. Registration is $100; new kit is $200. This event is for children ages eight to 14. For more info, visit kiwanisclubofbrandon.ca/kar-derby. Registration, car inspections and judging starts at 8:30 a.m.; practice races at 9 a.m.; main event at 10 a.m. Every driver is guaranteed a minimum of three races.

9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Brandon hosts a citywide yard sale. Sales west of 18th Street. Registration is closed. Yard sale locations and more details will be posted on the city’s website (brandon.ca).

Noon to 4 p.m. — Knox Green Team with help from Sustainable Brandon, Manitoba Sustainable Energy Association and Manitoba Electrical Vehicle Association is hosting Come to EV Fest West, Brandon and Area’s Electric Vehicle Information Session at the Commonwealth Air Training Museum. SUNDAY

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Westman Dreams for Kids is hosting a Children’s Country Fair at the Riverbank Discovery Centre.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum at McGill Field (Brandon Airport) is hosting its grand reopening by recognizing Armed Forces Day. The public is invited to participate in this family-friendly event. The Royal Canadian Air Force is expected to send aircraft that could include a C-130 Hercules and CT-142 Dash 8 as well as aircraft/helicopters from Southport. Along with our own aircraft: Cornell, Tiger Moth, Harvard, Stinson and Fleet Finch, and other aircraft may include a Musketeer, Stearman, Harvard, T28 Trojan and Nanchang. There will be no flying aircraft demonstrations, but you will be able to get up close and personal with all the aircraft and possibly the pilots. Special participant will be a CF-18 Fighter Full Scale Cockpit. The museum will be open and there will be free parking and free admission. Donations greatly appreciated.

MONDAY

1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Card Club meets Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place every Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

6:45 p.m. — Regular evening lawn bowling begins another season at Rideau Park (345 Park St.) Monday to Thursday. Please come out to enjoy Rideau Park, socialize and learn a new sport. Equipment is provided and your first game is free, $5 thereafter or memberships can be purchased for the entire season.

TUESDAY

9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. — Systems Beauty College (763 13th St.) is hosting a Beauty and Support Day, offering free haircuts to individuals living with cancer and cancer survivors. There will be a barbecue at 11 a.m. and funds will be donated to help fight cancer.

WEDNESDAY

10:30 to 11 a.m. — Baby Storytimes at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library (1570 18th St., Brandon) every Wednesday throughout June. Rhymes, songs, lap bounces and stories. For babies less than a year old up to 18 months with their parents or caregivers. No registration required.

1 to 4 p.m. — Join the Brandon Scrabble Club on Wednesdays at the Brandon Public Library for Scrabble, coffee and laughs. Scrabble boards are provided by the club and all levels of skill are welcome. No registration is required for this program.

1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — The Brandon Embroiderers meet weekly to share their love of needlework, learn new skills and stitch together. All levels and abilities are welcome to attend. Call Dianne at 204-725-1445 or Darlene at 204-727-1624 for more information.

3:20 to 4:45 p.m. — LEGO Bricks and Bits Club at the Lakeland Regional Library (318 Williams Ave., Killarney). LEGO provided. No registration required. Build your own adventure, complete challenges and LEGO builds displayed weekly.

5 to 8 p.m. — Wednesday Knights at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). The Brandon Knights Chess Club meets at Chez Angela on Wednesday evenings. Players of all skill levels are welcome.

AT THE CLUBS

The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — Southern Manitoba’s newest good times cover band, The Discmen, take the stage on Friday night at 9 p.m. $10 cover. This is an 18+ event and photo ID is required. On Saturday, come and get your rock on with Last Kiss — The Ultimate Kiss Tribute! Doors open at 8:30 p.m. This is an 18+ event and photo ID is required. Advance tickets $15 plus GST and fees, available at showpass.com. Night of the show $20. No reserved seating, all tickets are rush seating/standing room only.

Houstons Country Roadhouse (3130 Victoria Ave., Brandon) — Upcoming June 9: Primos Wrestling presents live pro wrestling with Hangover at Houstons! Start time is 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance at the Clarion or $20 at the door. For more info, visit primoswrestling.com.

Lady of the Lake (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — Come join us on Friday for some acoustic covers with Faye Desjarlais at 6 p.m. Then folk and blues virtuoso Jack Semple performs from 9 to 11 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Sand Hills Casino — Justin Aron and Dirty Pool entertain with some blues on Friday and Saturday at the Oasis Bar and Grill. Live and free.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — The only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of the more than 200,000 gunners who served Canada. The museum’s collection consists of more than 65,000 artifacts and includes more than 170 artillery pieces and vehicles. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. Admission: $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students (six to 18 years old), free for children under six. Phone 204-765-3000 (ext. 3570) or email RCAMuseum@forces.gc.ca. The “In Service of Peace” exhibit continues at the museum until the end of August. The exhibit highlights Canada’s experience in peacekeeping and peacemaking.

Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth (six to 18 years old), family (up to two adults and three children) $12, and children under five are free. Phone 204-727-1722 for more information.

Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — A “contemporary art gallery that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. Hours: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Phone 204-727-1036 or email: info@agsm.ca. Until June 3 — “The Long and the Short of It, Brandon Embroiderers.” In celebration of the group’s 25th anniversary, the exhibition showcases recent work by members of Brandon Embroiderers. Traditional and contemporary techniques will be featured, including blackwork, Hardanger, canvas work, cross stitch, crewel, goldwork, candlewicking, needle painting, ribbon and stumpwork. Until June 17 — “Stimulus/Response” by The Drawn Together Collective. In this exhibition, the 10 current members of the collective respond to works written by women of the Canadian Prairies, from the quintessential world of Margaret Lawrence’s “Manawaka” to a coming-of-midlife memoir written by a childhood friend.

Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023. To June 3, ArtsWest Travelling Gallery — With more than 73 entries by 43 artists, 19 works were selected to form this year’s Travelling Gallery. The gallery will visit 17 communities in southwestern Manitoba over the next year, and there is a Killarney artist in this year’s show.

Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St.) — Exhibits include Manitoba telephone history, Brandon History Hall, the BJ Hales Gallery and the William G. Hobbs Heritage Collection of painting prints. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Booking in advance is strongly recommended. Phone 204-717-1514 or email bgmainfo@wcgwave.ca.

26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

UPCOMING EVENTS

June 7-11 — The Manitoba Summer Fair takes place at the Keystone grounds featuring fantastic food, family fun, entertainment, saloon and of course the midway! Also Ag Awareness areas, horse shows and trade show vendors. Midway opens on June 7 at 4 p.m.; fireworks at dusk! The Travellers Day Parade will be held June 10 (arrives at fairgrounds at noon).

June 9 — Join us at the Sportsplex for a series of roller discos from 7 to 10 p.m. Tonight is ’90s, baby! Skate rentals available for free, courtesy of the Wheat City Roller Derby League. Pre-booking of skates open at noon on the day of the event. Limited quantities and sizes available. Admissions paid at the front desk.

June 10-11 — Southview Flea Market and Market Garden (Eastern Access 110 and 17th Street East across from Humane Society) is back for another season! This is our first market of the year and we are open both days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission $3; 12 and under are free. Lunch available by Lions Club. June 11 — Memory Lane Car Club presents Chrome in the Trees at the Manitoba Summer Fair on the Keystone Centre grounds from noon to 4 p.m. Special interest vehicles and motorcycles. Two people free/vehicle. Breakfast in the Dome Building from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. for a cost of $8. Enter and leave by south (Richmond Avenue) gates. June 14 — Tourism Westman presents the 2023 annual Tribute to Tourism Awards Gala at the Souris Glenwood Memorial Complex in Souris at 6 p.m. This evening will recognize and celebrate 27 exceptional individuals, businesses, organizations and communities within Westman. The evening will feature a meal from Woodfire Deli, entertainment by Bethel Road Music. June 15 — Daly House Museum presents An Old Time Radio Show and Dinner at the Ukrainian Reading Association Hall (1005 Assiniboine Ave.) at 6 p.m. The Assiniboine Theatre Company recreates the old-time radio shows as they would have been performed in the ’40s and ’50s. June 17 — Pioneer Power and Equipment Club’s 25th annual show will take place at the Commonwealth Air Training Museum (Brandon Airport) featuring antique farm equipment and automobiles on display, tractor activities, tractor race, parade of equipment plus a 50/50 raffle draw. Pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m.; events 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Childlren’s activities include a pedal tractor pull at noon.

June 17 — Father’s Day Grilling Competition will be held at SIN BIN at J & G Homes Arena from 4 to 10 p.m. Selected teams will face off in an amateur grilling competition. Live music, beer gardens, mini golf, $20 all-you-can-eat buffet. Cost is $10 at the door.

June 17 — MADD Brandon and Area is hosting the fourth annual Strides for Change colour walk/run at the Keystone Centre. Registration starts at 3 p.m.; please arrive by 4:15 to sign in and get your three packages of dye (additional packets are available for purchase). Run options are 2.5 km or 5 km and start at 5:30 p.m. Food trucks, music, kids’ activities and prizes for top fundraising individual, team and best costume. Cost: adult and youth 12 years and older $25; 11 and under are free. Anyone who raises over $100 for the run will receive more colour packets and other run attire, while supplies last! June 18 — Shoal Lake Curling Club is hosting a Father’s Day Fish Fry at the Shoal Lake Communiplex from 4 to 6 p.m. Adults $22; 12 and under $10. Take out order available by calling 204-365-7087.

June 18 — Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3 (560 13th St. East) is holding a Fathers’ Day Fish Fry with Lake Winnipeg pickerel at 5 p.m. Tickets are $18 and available at the Legion until June 14. Can also call 204-728-5026.

June 18 — Father’s Day Flower Giveaway. For those who have lost their father, husband or a child, Father’s Day can be a difficult time. Brockie Donovan will be handing out complimentary flowers at Rosewood Memorial Gardens from noon to 3 p.m. For more information, call Brockie Donovan Funeral and Cremation Services at 204-727-0694.

June 23 — Come to the corner of 12th Street and Princess Avenue and celebrate the Summer Soulstice block party! Feed your soul and celebrate one of the longest days of the year with a barbecue, beer, activities and live music. From 11 a.m. to 11:55 p.m. Princess Avenue will be blocked off.

June 25 — Westman Jams gathers on the last Sunday of each month to play classic country music at the Douglas Community Hall (201 Provincial Road 340, Douglas) from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. We accept donations to the Reg Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund to help send Westman students to the International Music Camp at the International Peace Garden.

July 6-9 — The community of Rivers is hosting “Rolling into Rivers” event featuring class reunions, golf tournaments, old-fashioned turkey shoot, pancake breakfasts, parade, Rivers Pipe Band reunion, barbecues, vehicle shows, beer gardens and entertainment, fireworks and much, much more. On Saturday, the Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee will hold a draw for a VIA Rail Winnipeg to Churchill and return trip and a Sekine Heritage Bicycle draw. Aug. 13 — Ladies Western Scramble takes place at the Wheat City golf course with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Deadline for registration is Aug. 7. This is a two-lady team event.
