TODAY

• 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. — The Manitoba High School Athletic Association will hold its track and field provincial championships at the UCT Stadium.

• 10:15 to 11 a.m. — Every Thursday throughout June will feature Storytimes with Michelle for preschoolers at the Brandon Public Library. Little ones can enjoy a story, song and craft. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

• 4 p.m. — The Manitoba Summer Fair takes place at the Keystone Centre grounds featuring fantastic food, family fun, entertainment, saloon and the midway. Also Ag Awareness areas, horse shows and trade show vendors. Midway opens at 4 p.m. The Travellers Day Parade will be held Saturday (arrives at fairgrounds at noon).

• 7 p.m. — The Lucky Break Ranch Barrel Racing Series takes place at the Lucky Break Ranch and Tack on Mayne Road in Rivers. The evening includes toonie runs and an MBRA Sanctioned Barrel Jackpot.

FRIDAY

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Every Friday is toddler time at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library. Join Robin for stories, songs and playtime. A parent or caregiver must attend. No registration is required.

• 2 p.m. — The Manitoba Summer Fair takes place at the Keystone Centre grounds featuring fantastic food, family fun, entertainment, saloon and the midway. Also Ag Awareness areas, horse shows and trade show vendors. Midway opens at 4 p.m.

• 7 p.m. — Join us at the Sportsplex for a series of roller discos from 7 to 10 p.m. Tonight is ’90s, baby! Skate rentals available for free, courtesy of the Wheat City Roller Derby League. Pre-booking of skates open at noon on the day of the event. Limited quantities and sizes available. Admissions paid at the front desk.

SATURDAY

• 10 a.m. — Eat Your Colours at the Global Market! A great selection of vegetable and bedding plants, flowers, asparagus and so much more. Let’s not forget about the deliciously homemade baked goods and preserves, and the beautifully crafted home decor. The Global Market runs every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. inside the Building Re-Fit Store at 23 12th St.

• 10 a.m. — All are welcome to join a satisfying forest restoration exercise, the Tree Tube and Caging Day, as we grow the expanding maple forest along our riverside trail. We’ll choose 10 young wild-seeded saplings currently inside tubes for graduation into their own spacious cages, which give them complete immunity from the local deer. Tree tubes give them a head start, but cages are the final solution to the deer problem. Come and appreciate first-hand our vision of a maple forest future! Entering at the 1735 Rosser Ave. East driveway is easiest. Parking available at the Green Spot or Crow’s. Bring water and sun protection!

• 11 a.m. — The Pinkest Owl Golf Tournament 2023 takes place at the Glen Lea Golf Course starting at 11 a.m. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the annual ladies golf tournament for breast cancer.

• 11 a.m. — The Travellers Day Parade, held in conjunction with the Manitoba Summer Fair, will start from Sixth Street and move up Rosser Avenue up to 13th Street, then down College Avenue, and up 10th Street to finish at Queens Avenue. The parade will arrive at the fairgrounds at noon.

• Noon — Memory Lane Car Club presents Chrome in the Trees at the Manitoba Summer Fair on the Keystone Centre grounds from noon to 4 p.m. Special interest vehicles and motorcycles. Two people free per vehicle. Breakfast in the Dome Building from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. for a cost of $8. Enter and leave by south (Richmond Avenue) gates. • 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. — Pooch Pride returns to the Riverbank Festival Park Stage for the second year. Dress up your pooch and yourself in your best Pride gear and walk the Riverbank trails to help us kick off Pride Week 2023: Growing Pride on the Prairies. The Station will be providing some great tunes, and House of Hex will be serving up some fabulous looks for photo-ops with you and your pooch. Dogs must be on a leash at all times in public spaces and at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. Be prepared for a hot day and bring water and sunscreen. Water bowls will be provided for pooches at the stage area.

MONDAY

• 1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Card Club meets Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

• 6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place every Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

• 6:45 p.m. — Regular evening lawn bowling begins another season at Rideau Park (345 Park St.) Monday to Thursday. Please come out to enjoy Rideau Park, socialize and learn a new sport. Equipment is provided and your first game is free, $5 thereafter. Memberships can be purchased for the entire season.

TUESDAY

• 6 p.m. — Come join Brandon Pride and the Brandon and District Labour Council in a conversation with Larry Rousseau (vice-president of the Canadian Labour Congress) and CUPE Manitoba president Gina McKay as they speak about their activism and history in their communities, labour and beyond. The event takes place at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium. There will be a Q&A following their presentations.

• 6 p.m. — Test your knowledge with Queer Trivia at Black Wheat Brewing, hosted by the House of Hex! Mercy Hex, Lilith Hex and Cosmic Hex have a long list of 2SLGBTQIA+ questions to quiz you on. So prepare your best team name and win some prizes! This is an all-ages event! Minors will need to be in the company of a parent or guardian while at the brewery.

WEDNESDAY

• 10 a.m. — Flag-raising and proclamation for Pride Week 2023: Growing Pride on the Prairies, at Brandon City Hall. This event will also be livestreamed on the Brandon Pride Facebook and Instagram pages and recorded to post on social media for everyone to view! Our Pride flag will be flying in front of city hall from June 14 to 17 in time for the Brandon Pride rally and Pride March.

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Baby Storytimes at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library (1570 18th St., Brandon) every Wednesday throughout June. Rhymes, songs, lap bounces and stories. For babies less than a year old up to 18 months with their parents or caregivers. No registration required.

WEDNESDAY

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Join the Brandon Scrabble Club on Wednesdays at the Brandon Public Library for Scrabble, coffee and laughs. Scrabble boards are provided by the club and all levels of skill are welcome. No registration is required for this program.

• 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — The Brandon Embroiderers meet weekly to share their love of needlework, learn new skills and stitch together. All levels and abilities are welcome to attend. Call Dianne at 204-725-1445 or Darlene at 204-727-1624 for more information.

• 3:20 to 4:45 p.m. — LEGO Bricks and Bits Club at the Lakeland Regional Library (318 Williams Ave., Killarney). LEGO provided. No registration required. Build your own adventure, complete challenges and LEGO builds displayed weekly.

• 5 to 8 p.m. — Wednesday Knights at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). The Brandon Knights Chess Club meets at Chez Angela on Wednesday evenings. Players of all skill levels are welcome.

• 6 p.m. — Tourism Westman presents the 2023 annual Tribute to Tourism Awards Gala at the Souris Glenwood Memorial Complex in Souris at 6 p.m. This evening will recognize and celebrate 27 exceptional individuals, businesses, organizations and communities within Westman. The evening will feature a meal from Woodfire Deli, entertainment by Bethel Road Music. AT THE CLUBS

• The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — Winnipeg cover band Cross Roads take the stage on Friday and Saturday night at 10 p.m. $10 cover. This is an 18+ event and photo ID is required. This talented group play many genres including pop, country and rock. Cross Roads are looking forward to their “The 40 debut” show.

• Houstons Country Roadhouse (3130 Victoria Ave., Brandon) — Primos Wrestling presents live pro wrestling with Hangover at Houstons on Friday night. Start time is 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance at the Clarion or $20 at the door. For more info, visit primoswrestling.com.

• Lady of the Lake (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — Come join us on Friday for free music by Brian Paul DG and Friends at 6 p.m. Then country music star Emma Peterson performs from 9 p.m. Tickets are $10.

• Sand Hills Casino — Country-Rock band 8 Track Shuffle entertain on Friday and Saturday at the Oasis Bar and Grill. Live and free.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

• Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — The only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of the more than 200,000 gunners who served Canada. The museum’s collection consists of more than 65,000 artifacts and includes more than 170 artillery pieces and vehicles. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. The “In Service of Peace” exhibit continues at the museum until the end of August. The exhibit highlights Canada’s experience in peacekeeping and peacemaking.

• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). • Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — A “contemporary art gallery that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. • Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. • Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St.) — Exhibits include Manitoba telephone history, Brandon History Hall, the BJ Hales Gallery and the William G. • 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

• ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• June 15 — Visit Section 6 for Queeraoke night! It is like their usual karaoke nights, but made extra special for Pride Week. This is an all-ages event! Minors will need to be in the company of a parent or guardian while at the brewery.

• June 15 — Daly House Museum presents An Old Time Radio Show and Dinner at the Ukrainian Reading Association Hall (1005 Assiniboine Ave.) at 6 p.m. The Assiniboine Theatre Company recreates the old-time radio shows as they would have been performed in the ’40s and ’50s. • June 16 — “Steppin’ Out” Dance at the Royal Canadian Legion No. 3 in Brandon, 7:30 – 11 p.m., with live music played by “Nite Life.” Admission $15. Refreshments included. For more information, call 204 728-5636.

• June 17 — Pioneer Power and Equipment Club’s 25th annual show will take place at the Commonwealth Air Training Museum (Brandon Airport) featuring antique farm equipment and automobiles on display, tractor activities, tractor race, parade of equipment plus a 50/50 raffle draw. Pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m.; events 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Children’s activities include a pedal tractor pull at noon.

• June 17 — Father’s Day Grilling Competition will be held at SIN BIN at J & G Homes Arena from 4 to 10 p.m. Selected teams will face off in an amateur grilling competition. Live music, beer gardens, mini golf, $20 all-you-can-eat buffet. Cost is $10 at the door.

• June 17 — The first summer event for Poor Michael’s Bookship in Onanole starts on at 7 p.m. The Cold Reads and Cold Beers event, presented by the Wormhole Microtheatre Company, is described as “short plays read with gusto.” Seeting is limited, so reserve your spot.

• June 17 — MADD Brandon and Area is hosting the fourth annual Strides for Change colour walk/run at the Keystone Centre. Registration starts at 3 p.m.; please arrive by 4:15 to sign in and get your three packages of dye (additional packets are available for purchase). Run options are 2.5 kilometres or five kilometres and start at 5:30 p.m. Food trucks, music, kids’ activities and prizes for top fundraising individual, team and best costume. Cost: adult and youth 12 years and older $25; 11 and under are free. Anyone who raises more than $100 for the run will receive more colour packets and other run attire, while supplies last! • June 17 — Show your Pride at Brandon City Hall (410 Ninth St.) for the rally to start off Brandon’s Pride March. Remember to bring water and dress for the weather. Gather on Ninth Street alongside city hall at 12:30 p.m. for a smudging, prayer, a speech from the chair of Brandon Pride, and the introduction of the Pride March 2023 grand marshals. The march will move onto Victoria Avenue and move east toward Rideau Park where we will enter off Franklin Street to begin Pride in the Park. The Pride March will be directed by Brandon Police Service traffic officers and there will be cooling and water stations with trash bins available along the route.

• June 18 — Bring your dad and your fishing rods to the Father’s Day Fishing event at Dinsdale Park from 8:30 a.m. to noon, brought to you by the Men’s Resource Centre of Brandon. The event includes free breakfast at 8:30 a.m. There will be awards for biggest fish caught.

• June 18 — Shoal Lake Curling Club is hosting a Father’s Day Fish Fry at the Shoal Lake Communiplex from 4 to 6 p.m. Adults $22; 12 and under $10. Takeout orders available by calling 204-365-7087.

• June 18 — Royal Canadian Legion Branch #3 (560 13th St. East) is holding a Fathers’ Day Fish Fry with Lake Winnipeg pickerel at 5 p.m. Tickets are $18 and available at the Legion until June 14. Can also call 204-728-5026.

• June 18 — Father’s Day Flower Giveaway. For those who have lost their father, husband or a child, Father’s Day can be a difficult time. • June 22 — Three-time Manitoba Country Music Association Fan’s Choice Award Winner, two-time Manitoba Country Music Association female artist of the year, CFL halftime and Dauphin Countryfest Mainstage performer Kendra Kay will be live on the Fusion Credit Union Stage at the Riverbank Discovery Centre starting at 7 p.m., with an opening act performance kicking off the show at 6:30 p.m.

• June 23 — Come to the corner of 12th Street and Princess Avenue and celebrate the Summer Soulstice block party! Feed your soul and celebrate one of the longest days of the year with a barbecue, beer, activities and live music. From 11 a.m. to 11:55 p.m. Princess Avenue will be blocked off.

• June 25 — Westman Jams gathers on the last Sunday of each month to play classic country music at the Douglas Community Hall (201 Provincial Road 340, Douglas) from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome. We accept donations to the Reg Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund to help send Westman students to the International Music Camp at the International Peace Garden.

• July 6-9 — The community of Rivers is hosting “Rolling into Rivers” event featuring class reunions, golf tournaments, old-fashioned turkey shoot, pancake breakfasts, parade, Rivers Pipe Band reunion, barbecues, vehicle shows, beer gardens and entertainment, fireworks and much, much more. On Saturday, the Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee will hold a draw for a VIA Rail Winnipeg to Churchill and return trip and a Sekine Heritage Bicycle draw. • Aug. 13 — Ladies Western Scramble takes place at the Wheat City golf course with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Deadline for registration is Aug. 7. This is a two-lady team event.
