SIXTY YEARS AGO
Something new has been added at the Lindenberg Brothers mill site on First Street. Lindenberg is recognizing the swing toward mechanization of farm operation across western Manitoba and will tomorrow open the first bulk feed plant in the province outside the at-mill plants in Winnipeg. This new building is also only the second in Western Canada.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
With the construction of a new jail next year east of First Street, the site of the existing correctional institute will be used for new low-rental senior citizens apartments.
R.H. Hofland, director of safety for the Workmen’s Compensation Board, presented the Hooker Chemical Co. with an award for 100,000 man hours without a lost-time injury. Receiving the award was Ken Martinook and Bruce Braaten.
FORTY YEARS AGO
While city councillors watched, Earl Backman, 35, took his oath of office yesterday to become Brandon’s new city manager.
Cankerworms moved into the city last week, stripping some trees bare and catching the parks department off-guard.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
A severe electrical storm that blanketed the city at about 6 p.m. last night resulted in a lightning strike that destroyed Cabinet-Craft Woodwork at 617 Assiniboine Ave. A witness said a tree was struck just west of the building and a ball of fire streaked across onto the roof.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
After mapping out countless configurations on how the City of Brandon would be involved in a new athletic facility, Mayor Dave Burgess says it’s becoming more likely the city will go ahead on its own and renovate the city-owned Canada Games Sportsplex. The city has been involved in talks with the YMCA, Brandon University and the Brandon School Division about building a new Y somewhere in the city.
TEN YEARS AGO
A burly burger only available in Brandon became an Internet flavour of the week Thursday as news organizations from around the world ran with the mountainous mass of meat. The “T-Rex” burger consists of nine patties and nine slices of cheese between a sandwich bun. The two pounds and four ounces of meat is topped with pickles, red onion, ketchup, mayonnaise, lettuce and a slice of tomato, and up until yesterday it was only available at Wendy’s in Brandon. A spokesman for Wendy’s head office located in Dublin, Ohio, said he didn’t know anything about the burger.
Northeastern Manitoba forest fire evacuees are waiting patiently to hear when they will be able to return home after heavy smoke in the area has forced them out of their communities. Those with health risks, seniors and children will make up the nearly 300 evacuees expected to arrive in Brandon, according to the province.
