TODAY

• 10:15 to 11 a.m. — Every Thursday throughout June will feature Storytimes with Michelle for preschoolers at the Brandon Public Library. Little ones can enjoy a story, song and craft. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

• 9:20 p.m. — The Shamrock Drive In (Killarney) opens for the season today. Gates open at 9:20 p.m. with the movie beginning when deemed dark enough. Admission is $30 per vehicle or $10 per person ages 13 and up. Those under 12 years of age are free. Concession available. Showing tonight and Friday: “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”

FRIDAY

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

• 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Every Friday is toddler time at the Shoppers Mall branch of the Western Manitoba Regional Library. Join Robin for stories, songs and playtime. A parent or caregiver must attend. No registration is required.

• 2 p.m. — Dauphin’s Countryfest, Westman’s largest country music festival, returns with a superstar lineup throughout the weekend, including Dierks Bentley, Walker Hayes, John Fogerty, Tenilles Townes, The Road Hammers, Honeymoon Suite and many more. • 8 p.m. — The East Side Eatery (1451 Richmond Ave. East) is hosting Edmonton’s Fall of Earth while on tour in support of their recently released album “From the Ashes.”

SATURDAY (CANADA DAY)

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Come out and visit the Farmers’ Market at the Riverbank Discovery Centre every Saturday until Sept. 23. Note: Special times for July 1.

• 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — Eat Your Colours at the Global Market! A great selection of vegetable and bedding plants, flowers, asparagus and so much more. Let’s not forget about the deliciously homemade baked goods and preserves, and the beautifully crafted home decor. The Global Market runs every Saturday inside the Building Re-Fit Store at 23 12th St.

• All day — Brandon’s Canada Day celebrations take place at the Riverbank Discovery Centre beginning at 10 a.m. with free kayak and canoe rentals, food trucks, Farmers’ Market, Children’s play area and entertainment on the Fusion Credit Union Stage. The fireworks display kicks off at dusk.

• All day — Dauphin’s Countryfest, Westman’s largest country music festival, continues with a superstar lineup throughout the weekend including Dierks Bentley, Walker Hayes, John Fogerty, Tenilles Townes, the Road Hammers, Honeymoon Suite and many more! • 4 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. — CFB Shilo’s Canada Day celebrations take place at the L25 Building. Lots of family activities including mechanical surfboard, gladiator joust, axe throwing and more. A movie, “Turning Red,” will take place at the GSH Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Live entertainment with Michelle Wright, Kendra Kay and Richard Wood at 7:30 p.m. followed by fireworks at dusk. Food trucks and beer gardens. Must be 18 years or older to enter beer gardens. (Cash only).

• 7 p.m. — Comedy Invasion comes to the Minnedosa Inn (138 Main St. S.) with Nelson Mayer, Scott Porteous, Clayton T. Stewart and Herbert Henries. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show at 8 p.m. Tickets are one for $20 or two for $35.

• 7:30 p.m. — Poor Michael’s Emporium (322 Highway No. 10 at Onanole) will be open late for the fireworks on Canada Day. Our friends The Handsome Fatties (Bill Acevedo and Marc Clement) will join us on the patio for some great entertainment from this acoustic duo. Enjoy a refreshing beverage on the patio and listen to some great free live music.

MONDAY

• 1:15 to 4 p.m. — The East End Sunshine Card Club meets Mondays at the East End Community Centre at the corner of Victoria Avenue East and Park Street. Coffee and snacks. Members and guests welcome. For more information, call 204-727-3539.

• 6:30 p.m. — UCT Travo Bingo (205 College Ave., Brandon) takes place every Monday. Doors open at 4 p.m., and the early bird starts at 6:30 p.m. Regular games start at 7:10 p.m. Chase the Ace each week. Proceeds go to help those in need in Brandon and area.

• 6:45 p.m. — Regular evening lawn bowling begins another season at Rideau Park (345 Park St.) Monday to Thursday. Please come out to enjoy Rideau Park, socialize and learn a new sport. Equipment is provided and your first game is free, $5 thereafter. Memberships can be purchased for the entire season.

• 7 p.m. — Lawn bowling at Stanley Park (15th and Princess Ave.) takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from June to September. Bowls and instructions provided. Try it for free. Join us for fun and light exercise.

TUESDAY

• 4:45 p.m. — Pine to Prairie Relic Run is expected to be at the Brandon General Museum and Archives around 4:45 p.m. This is a group of five antique cars travelling across the original Trans-Canada Highway from the Ontario border to the Saskatchewan border. The antique vehicles are all Fords: 1923 Ford Model T four-door Touring, 1928 Ford Model A two-door Sedan, 1928 Ford Model A two-door Depot Hack, 1930 Ford Model A four-door Sedan and a 1931 Ford Model A two-door Victoria. On Wednesday, they will be at the Daly House Museum at 9 a.m. and continuing on with stops at the Oak Lake and District Museum, Virden Pioneer Museum and the Manitoba Antique Automobile Museum in Elkhorn before ending the tour at the Saskatchewan border.

• 6:30 p.m. — Music in the Park takes place at Princess Park every Tuesday from June through August. This week features Just 4 Kicks. This event is free to attend. All are welcome.

WEDNESDAY

• 1 to 4 p.m. — Join the Brandon Scrabble Club on Wednesdays at the Brandon Public Library for Scrabble, coffee and laughs. Scrabble boards are provided by the club and all levels of skill are welcome. No registration is required for this program.

• 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. — The Brandon Embroiderers meet weekly to share their love of needlework, learn new skills and stitch together. All levels and abilities are welcome to attend. Call Dianne at 204-725-1445 or Darlene at 204-727-1624 for more information.

• 3:20 to 4:45 p.m. — LEGO Bricks and Bits Club at the Lakeland Regional Library (318 Williams Ave., Killarney). LEGO provided. No registration required. Build your own adventure, complete challenges and LEGO builds displayed weekly.

• 5 to 8 p.m. — Wednesday Knights at Chez Angela Bakery and Café (Unit C, 29 10th St., Brandon). The Brandon Knights Chess Club meets at Chez Angela on Wednesday evenings. All skill levels are welcome.

• 7 p.m. — Prairie Saxophone Initiative presents “Time Converging,” a captivating showcase of the sounds of the saxophone throughout the years at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall (Brandon University).

AT THE CLUBS

• The 40 (210 18th St. North, Brandon) — The 40 is open all long weekend. Canada Day as well as Sunday from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.; Monday 10 a.m.-11 p.m.

• Lady of the Lake (135-B 17th St. North, Brandon) — Multi-instrumentalist Chris Froome will entertain on Friday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Then stick around for Open Mic Night for all local artists to show off their talent.If you would like to book a spot, call Dallas at 204-761-1835.

• Sand Hills Casino — Join us for a weekend of entertainment by Buxtone Trio on Friday and Saturday at the Oasis Bar and Grill. Live and free.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

• Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — The only museum in the world dedicated to telling the story of the more than 200,000 gunners who served Canada. The museum’s collection consists of more than 65,000 artifacts and includes more than 170 artillery pieces and vehicles. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. The “In Service of Peace” exhibit continues at the museum until the end of August. The exhibit highlights Canada’s experience in peacekeeping and peacemaking.

• Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. We are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles, and hundreds of artifacts from that era. The 18,039 RCAF members who lost their lives during the war are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial Wall. The museum is proud to be one of the seven Manitoba Signature Museums, a Manitoba Star Attraction and a National Historic Site. Coming for July and August: Ace Academy, a virtual reality exhibit. Come fly a Second World War biplane included in your admission.

• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls, and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth (six to 18 years old), family (up to two adults and three children) $12, and children under five are free. Phone 204-727-1722 for more information.

• Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — A “contemporary art gallery that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. Hours: 4 to 9 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday; noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. Phone 204-727-1036 or email: info@agsm.ca. • Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The Frame House was built in 1888 by James F. Frame. A hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. Entering the museum is like stepping back in time to the 1880s, as you’ll notice the Victorian stylings throughout the home, which is complete with a spacious coach house. Houses a collection of more than 11,000 items. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. Guided tours and admission prices: $5 for adults; $2 for school-aged children and free for children under five. Groups of eight or more receive a 50 per cent discount on admissions.

• Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023.

• Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St.) — Exhibits include Manitoba telephone history, Brandon History Hall, the BJ Hales Gallery and the William G. • 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

• ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• July 6 — City of Brandon Parks and Recreation Services presents live and free, The Janzen Boys at the Fusion Credit Union stage at the Riverbank Discovery Centre. Music starts at 6:30 p.m. with opening act Chris Ghidoni Band.

• July 6 — Cruise Night takes place downtown Brandon on the first Thursday of the summer months from 6 to 9 p.m. along Rosser Avenue between Sixth and 13th streets.

• July 6 — Virden’s Music in the Park takes place every Thursday on the Jubilee Stage in Victoria Park (in case of rain, at the Legion Hall) at 7 p.m. July 6 features some country classics with Lyle Baldwin.

• July 6-9 — The community of Rivers is hosting “Rolling into Rivers” event featuring class reunions, golf tournaments, old-fashioned turkey shoot, pancake breakfasts, parade, Rivers Pipe Band reunion, barbecues, vehicle shows, beer gardens and entertainment, fireworks and much, much more. On Saturday, the Rivers Train Station Restoration Committee will hold a draw for a VIA Rail Winnipeg to Churchill and return trip and a Sekine Heritage Bicycle draw. • July 7 — “Tina: Simply The Best” will take place at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium at 8 p.m. Tickets available at the WMCA box office or by calling 204-728-9510.

• July 7-9 — Souris Peacock Days and Fair with special events all weekend such as CCDA Stock Dog Trials, antique tractor pull, MBRA barrel racing, parade, old time dance, live music, peacock calling competition, beer gardens, food venues and much, much more.

• July 8 — Colour Fest 2023 takes place at Dinsdale Park (321 Assiniboine Ave.) at 4 p.m. featuring music and food for purchase. Tickets: adults $10; children (5-12 years) $5 and under five are free. One complimentary colour pack is included with an adult ticket. More colour packs will be available at venue.

• July 8-9 — Southview Flea Market and Market Garden (Eastern Access 110 and 17th Street East across from the Humane Society) is back for another season! • July 14-16 — Doors Open Brandon is a weekend event offering visitors a chance to explore historically significant sites throughout the city. Self-guided tours of heritage buildings and other sites of significance will take place from 1 to 5 p.m. both days. There are four guided tour options this year. • July 16 — It’s comedy night at the Roxy! Comedy Invasion is coming to the Roxy Theatre (291 Hamilton St.) in Neepawa featuring Nelson Mayer, Scott Porteous, Clayton T. Stewart and Herbert Henries. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show at 8 p.m. Tickets are one for $20 or two for $35.

• July 19-23 — The World Clydesdale Show takes place in the Westoba Agricultural Centre of Excellence at the Keystone Centre. • July 21-23 — Salamander Summer Music Festival is taking place at Rideau Park. Party under the water tower with live music featuring DJs, local bands, university artists, performance troupes and more. Also on site will be a kids’ area, workshops and art installations; food trucks and beer gardens; Vendor Village. Weekend passes are $50 and available at salamandersummerfest.ca

• July 22-23 — Brandon’s open garden tours take place over the weekend. Come and visit some of Brandon’s hidden garden gems.

• Aug. 13 — Ladies Western Scramble takes place at the Wheat City golf course with a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Deadline for registration is Aug. 7. This is a two-lady team event.
