SIXTY YEARS AGO
R.D. Turner, president of TransAir Ltd., was in Brandon to discuss the schedule of the airline’s Prairie route. Service to and from Brandon will remain the same, but will include the addition of Dauphin to the route. This will mark the first time the two cities have been linked by air on a regular basis.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Curran Park is the setting this weekend for a huge gathering of radio buffs, better known as CBers (for citizen band). About 1,500 people are expected to make their appearance at the park before the weekend is over.
FORTY YEARS AGO
An innovative sewage plant in Souris opened today. Charlie Hughes, a 67-year-old engineer, under the corporate backing of Cowatt Systems Ltd., has implemented the world’s first upflow clarifier for sewage treatment.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Bryan Enns, 10, of Cartwright and Jamie Scott, 13, of Brandon enjoyed the experience of a lifetime when they attended the two-day Coca-Cola/Wayne Gretzky Hockey Camp last weekend in Quebec and received several pointers from the NHL superstar.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Thousands of rubber ducks will not be the only river lovers to cruise the Assiniboine River on Canada Day. For the first time in 120 years, a pontoon will take the patriotic on a half-hour tour. “When people first arrived in Brandon, it was by river. It was very important in determining where Brandon would be located,” said Lois Crawley, Riverbank Development and Tourism Services manager. The 12-seater will leave from the Riverbank Discovery Centre and take passengers on an interpretive tour along the same river that used to transport logs from Riding Mountain National Park.
TEN YEARS AGO
A bomb scare on Thursday turned out to be nothing more than a failed science experiment, according to police. The Brandon Police Service responded to a call regarding a potential homemade bomb on the 600 block of 20th Street. “Investigation into it revealed that it was some sort of science experiment that their son had been working on and not an explosive device,” Const. Ron Burgess said.
The Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) received a new tool Wednesday to help the organization reach its goal of tracking the speeds of more than 20,000 cars on Brandon streets this year. Donated by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), COPP now has a second SpeedWatch board to track how fast vehicles are travelling.
A Brandon family was able to move into their new home Friday, thanks to the Solutions To Eliminate Poverty Permanently (STEPP) homes project. Mario Ceron, his wife and three children were greeted by Mayor Shari Decter Hirst, Brandon East NDP MLA Drew Caldwell, regional director of the Canadian Mental Health Association Glen Kruck and other dignitaries to receive the keys to the second STEPP home built in Brandon. The three-bedroom home is located at 427 Rosser Ave. East.
