SIXTY YEARS AGO

Mrs. V.L. Jackson of Douglas proudly displayed her Shropshire ram Tom, which was selected grand champion at the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba. All four top places in Shropshire classes went to owners of this champion.

The attendance on the second day of the provincial fair, Citizen’s Day, was estimated at 15,000.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Keystone Centre has received its first tax bill. It amounts to $110,000.

Milk prices for the three-quart container will go up in the city by the end of the week, rising from 93 to 99 cents.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Organizers of the first Beaver Dam Lake Country and Music Festival say they hope to make it an annual event. Spokesman Dan Roy said more than 10,000 people came out to the three-day event this past weekend.

The Provincial Labour Relations Board has told the Mohawk Oil Co. plant in Minnedosa to cut its seven-day-a-week schedule back to five days a week.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba, where government-run gambling is a booming business, will spend more than $500,000 a year to treat pathological players who need help with their addiction.

Brandon General Hospital will be introducing a program later this year that will allow mothers and newborn babies to go home sooner. Mothers and newborns, if they meet criteria, will be discharged between 24 to 48 hours after the birth.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A controversial court case about paying to do business in downtown Brandon could be factoring into a 10 per cent drop in the amount the city has collected in business improvement fees from core-area merchants this year. Val Rochelle, the city’s accounting supervisor, says the municipal treasury has only received $127,568 of the $215,477 they expect to collect from downtown merchants to cover the costs of the Downtown Business Improvement Association. Last year, the city had collected about 70 per cent of the fees by the June 30 deadline.

Brandon University history Prof. Jim Naylor will be the president of the Marquis Project’s board for the upcoming year. The Project, a community group that works with developing countries, also made Diane Smith its new vice-president. Lyall Campbell will continue as secretary and David McConkey as treasurer, while Louise Uhryniuk becomes vice-president.

TEN YEARS AGO

Work will begin this summer on a new earthen dike near 18th Street and Grand Valley Road. It will span 70 metres and will replace the super sandbag dike that has been constructed at the intersection over the past few years.

The RCMP dive team was searching the waters of Gull Lake near Gillam Wednesday for the pilot of a helicopter that crashed there Monday. The wreckage of the Bell 206 helicopter belonging to Custom Helicopters of St. Andrews was located on Tuesday around noon by a military search and rescue team. Though some media outlets are reporting the pilot’s body has been found, RCMP Cpl. Miles Hiebert said that is not the case at this time.
