SIXTY YEARS AGO

Four students from the studio of Sister M. St. Geraldine, St. Michael’s Academy, have been awarded medals by Trinity College, London. The students were Dennis Breen, Hans Kruger, Nicola Kazakiewicz and Nina Kazakiewicz, all for their respective grades.

Initial prices for top-grade Prairie wheat, oats and barley will remain unchanged for another year, and Canada will seek a sharp increase in use of Canadian wheat in the international program.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

The Annual Clear Lake Regatta was held over the weekend with 14 boats competing. Pete Isaac of Winnipeg won the open handicap event.

A $5,000 research grant by Manitoba Hydro has been awarded to Dr. P. Letkeman, chairman of the chemistry department at Brandon University, to investigate the thermal effects in the Assiniboine River resulting from the effluent from Manitoba Hydro generating station in east Brandon.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Human error is the most likely reason why a nearly new Boeing 767 ran out of fuel in mid-air and was forced to glide to a powerless landing onto an abandoned runway used for car racing in Gimli yesterday. The mix-up over metrication may have been responsible for the miscalculation.

McKenzie Steele Briggs Co. Ltd. president Bill Moore and two company officers are contemplating court action against the Crown after being fired for conflict of interest.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Manitoba’s Water Resources Branch issued a flash flood warning for Winnipeg and surrounding areas following a weekend of storms that flooded basements and streets throughout the city.

Israeli warplanes, gunboats and howitzers blasted suspected guerrilla bases across Lebanon today as Israel’s heaviest attack since its 1982 invasion extended into a second day.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

City council votes Monday on whether to buy the former Royal Canadian Mounted Police Building on Victoria Avenue and turn it into a communication centre for the city’s police and fire departments. The building, vacated by the RCMP in February when they moved to the RM of Cornwallis, is being offered at $605,000 plus taxes by the federal public works department, which owns the empty building. The RCMP station would house the city’s emergency 911 call centre as well as community services departments of the police and fire department.

TEN YEARS AGO

Twenty-nine Brandon proprietors are at risk of losing their property in a tax sale if they don’t pay up soon. The city has served first notice of auction to the remaining properties still on the tax arrears list.

A plan by the City of Brandon and Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation to put a dike along Highway 110 in the RM of Cornwallis will go through a consultation process before construction begins, the city says. The city says the $24-million plan will have multiple stages and officials will consult with area residents for each phase. The city also has plans for a presentation outlining the entire project this fall.
