TODAY

• 10:15 to 11 a.m. — Every Thursday throughout August will feature Story and Song Circle with Michelle for preschoolers at the Brandon Public Library. Little ones can enjoy a story, songs and craft. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

• 7 p.m. — Dance Night at the Virden Legion with music by Ryan Bender and Lorne Frape and dance demos by local dance groups. Also the Legion Ladies will be hosting a barbecue.

• 7 p.m. — Route 10 Collective, a collection of Clear Lake area musicians, will be performing all weekend at the Onanole Rec Centre. Doors open at 7 p.m.; show at 8 p.m. In honour of the 50th anniversary of some of rock’s most seminal albums, the Route 10 Collective is presenting “1973: A Mix Tape,” playing some of 1973’s greatest music. “Dark Side of the Moon” and “Band On the Run” will be featured, as well as deep cuts for the ears of the true aficionados. Advance tickets are available at Poor Michael’s Emporium in Onanole 204-848-0336 for $30 (cash only).

FRIDAY

• All day — The International Peace Garden’s Summer Celebration takes place over the weekend featuring movies, magic, live music, special activities for kids and much more. A highlight of the weekend celebration is a series of screenings of three movies produced in North Dakota. Movie schedule: Today is “End of the Rope” at 6 p.m.; Saturday is “Sanctified” at 2 p.m. and Sunday features “A Heart Like Water” at 2 p.m. For more information, visit peacegarden.com/events.

• 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Brandon Farmers’ Market takes place inside The Town Centre (800 Rosser Ave., Brandon). Local fresh produce, baking, jams and jellies, pickling, yarn, bison, beef, beeswax candles, crafts and more. This event runs year-round.

• 9 a.m. — Athletes from British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba will compete in classic and equipped powerlifting (squat bench deadlift) and classic and equipped bench press at the Western Canadian Powerlifting Championships being held at the Brandon University Healthy Living Centre throughout the weekend. • 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. — Brandon’s Ribfest, presented by the Brandon Sunset Rotary, returns to the Riverbank Discovery Centre. This three-day event features the best in barbecue ribs as well as chicken, sausages, pulled pork and several accompanying side dishes. Beer tent, live music and a kids’ zone will also be on site. Admission is free. Hours: Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

• 11:30 a.m. — Virden Pioneer Home Museum’s 2023 Museum Day and barbecue is happening today. Come out to see us at 390 King St. West for burgers and hotdogs, activities and games for the whole family and toonie tours of the museum! • 4 p.m. — Melita’s Banana Days kick off today at the Melita River Park all sorts of activities including gladiator jousting, archery tag, tug-of-war and a beer gardens with entertainment by Inferno and Charly Artz. The night closes out with a drone light show.

• 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — “Peas be kind to others” at the Global Market this Saturday. Head to the Global Market for a fun and delicious experience! • 6:45 p.m. — Regular evening lawn bowling begins another season at Rideau Park (345 Park St.) Monday to Thursday. Please come out to enjoy Rideau Park, socialize and learn a new sport. Equipment is provided and your first game is free, and $5 thereafter. Memberships can be purchased for the entire season.

• 7 p.m. — Lawn bowling at Stanley Park (15th Street and Princess Avenue) takes place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until September. Bowls and instructions provided. Try it for free. Join us for fun and light exercise.

TUESDAY

• 6:30 p.m. — Music in the Park takes place at Princess Park every Tuesday in August. This week features Lucky Ned. This event is free to attend. All are welcome.

WEDNESDAY

• 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. — LEGO Bricks and Bits Club at the Lakeland Regional Library (318 Williams Ave., Killarney). LEGO provided. No registration required. Build your own adventure, complete challenges and LEGO builds displayed weekly. Second session at 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

• Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. The 18,039 RCAF members who lost their lives during the war are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Second World War Memorial Wall. The museum is proud to be one of the seven Manitoba Signature Museums, a Manitoba Star Attraction and a National Historic Site. For August: Ace Academy, a virtual reality exhibit. Come fly a Second World War biplane included in your admission.

• Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June); Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. (July and August). Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and youth (six to 18 years old), family (up to two adults and three children) $12, and children under five are admitted free. • Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — “A contemporary art gallery, school, and shop that celebrates artistic excellence and diversity within our region and beyond.” The AGSM is Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first. • Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The Frame House was built in 1888 by James F. Frame. A hardware merchant and prominent citizen in the community. Entering the museum is like stepping back in time to the 1880s, as you’ll notice the Victorian stylings throughout the home, which is complete with a spacious coach house. Houses a collection of more than 11,000 items. Open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Guided tours and admission prices: $5 for adults; $2 for school-aged children and free for children under five. Groups of eight or more receive a 50 per cent discount on admissions.

• Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 431-280-0023.

• Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. • 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

• ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa, in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours are: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

• Aug. 17-20 — Virden Indoor Rodeo and Wild West Daze will be held throughout the town of Virden as well as the Tundra Oil and Gas Place. • Aug. 19 — Props & Hops Beer Tasting event will be held at the Commonwealth Air Training Museum from 6-9 p.m. Participating brewers include Black Wheat, Farmery, Section 6, Trans Canada, and Barn Hammer. • Aug. 19 — The Wawanesa Children’s Fair will be held at the Wawanesa Recreation Grounds from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This fair is free for all to attend. There will be a charge for food from the canteen. Come to see the reptiles and the trucks, play games, run races and ride on wagons. Other events include bouncy castles, sumo wrestling and face painting. Everyone welcome.

• Aug. 19 — Come out and join us for the much-awaited return of the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival! This year we join the global celebrations honouring the double anniversary of the legendary composer and pianist Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), commemorating 150 years since his birth and 80 years since his passing. On Aug. 19: “Soirée Rachmaninoff” will take place on opening night in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at the Brandon University School of Music at 7:30 p.m. featuring well-known father-son pianists Alexander and Daniel Tselyakov. • Aug. 25-27 — The 2023 Morden Corn and Apple Festival, Manitoba’s largest street festival, returns for the last weekend in August. Come out for some free hot, buttered corn on the cob, apple juice, parade, children’s activities and more than 200 vendors selling everything from delicious food to gorgeous handmade goods.
