The strong Shilo Goldeyes Swimming Club coached by Jim McMeekan dominated the annual Western Manitoba Swim Meet at the Kiwanis swimming pool. Competitors came from Brandon, Shilo, Portage la Prairie, Carman and Virden.

The Bank of Canada increased its lending rate to four per cent from 3.5 in what may have been another indirect repercussion from the proposed U.S. tax on American purchases of foreign securities.

Brandon’s Gerry Clark, 53, surprised no one by capturing his second western Manitoba seniors’ open golf tournament in three years yesterday at the Brandon Golf and Country Club with a six-over-par 76.

Drivers had to abandon their cars and swim for their lives yesterday when a flash flood swamped the gambling city of Las Vegas, normally one of the driest cities in the United States.

Rivers and streams in southern Manitoba continued to rise today, sending many Winnipeg residents rushing out to seek insurance that would cover future flooded basements. The city was warned another heavy rain could back up sewers in up to 40 per cent of Winnipeg homes.

Brandon’s public library is getting $309,000 from the provincial government for its operating costs over the next year, Brandon East MLA Drew Caldwell announced. The funding is a continuation of the province’s ongoing annual operating grant to the library. The library’s annual operating budget is $911,000, with the rest of the money coming from the seven municipalities in the library’s coverage area, says chief librarian Kathy Thornborough. Four branches, Brandon’s being the biggest, are located within the coverage area.

An inmate at the Brandon Correctional Centre might be looking at more time behind bars. According to police, the 23-year-old man tried to send a letter to a woman telling her how to testify in court, which was intercepted by staff before it was mailed out. The man was also under orders not to communicate with the woman.

Former Winnipeg Blue Bombers player Wade Miller was named the team’s acting CEO as the struggling CFL club cleaned house Friday, firing GM Joe Mack and president/CEO Garth Buchko. Mack’s dismissal wasn’t surprising as Winnipeg (1-5) is last in the East Division and 21-39 overall since he was hired in 2010 as GM and vice-president of football operations. But Buchko’s departure — he had been named president and CEO in January 2012 — and subsequent hiring of Miller certainly were unexpected.
