SIXTY YEARS AGO

One of two ewes that escaped from a pen at the Co-op Livestock yards yesterday was later recaptured by 12-year-old Bob Preston, who chased the animal for about six city blocks on his bicycle.

Albert Edward Day, a veteran of the Boer War, received a life membership in the Canadian Legion today. Day wore the Queen Victoria Service medal for service in the Boer War.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

Industry and Commerce Minister Len Evans has announced that a $994,392 contract has been awarded to Crystal Builders Ltd. of Winnipeg for the construction of a 78-unit seniors housing project in Brandon.

As grain prices reach record levels on futures markets across Canada and the U.S., farmers are harvesting this year’s crop. Swathing is well underway on some areas of the Prairies, with some farmers already starting to combine.

FORTY YEARS AGO

An estimated 2,000 bikers staged a demonstration at the Manitoba legislature to protest the province’s proposed compulsory helmet legislation, but their appeal fell on determined ears as Transportation Minister Sam Uskiw said the government won’t back down.

Government Services Minister John Plohman announced the official end today of the aerial spraying program to control western equine encephalitis in Manitoba.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Souris’ oldest building entered a new age this weekend when a small choir sang “Faith of Our Fathers” a short distance away from where the first European settlers built a church in 1883. The building had been destined for demolition four years ago. The Souris and District Heritage managed to save the original section of the church and moved it to a farm where it was stored. Two years ago, it was brought back into Souris and was set on the banks where the Plumb Creek flows into the Souris River. A ceremony was held this weekend to mark completion of the restoration project.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A young boy was killed and nine people sent to hospital after a devastating six-vehicle collision yesterday east of Minnedosa. The accident, which involved a milk tanker and five cars, happened at a construction site on the Yellowhead Highway one kilometre west of Franklin, shortly before 10 a.m. RCMP said it could be at least a week before traffic analysts can say what caused the accident.

The Assiniboine Kiwanis Club of Brandon is teaming up with Staples Business Depot to supply needy children with school supplies this fall. Kiwanis Club members have set up a miniature school bus in Staples and are encouraging people to drop in a few extra supplies when they take their kids shopping for binders, geometry sets and pencils.

TEN YEARS AGO

A 14-year-old girl who took part in a high-profile attack at Shoppers Mall has been sentenced to probation for that and other crimes. The girl’s lawyer says the teen has told him she’s now embarrassed that she was part of the mall melee, which was video-recorded and posted online.

The man who created Canada’s superhero was in Brandon this week as part of road trip across the western half of the country. Captain Canuck creator Richard Comely and his wife Evelyn left their home in Toronto 39 days ago and have been driving across the provinces in their van to business meetings, media interviews, autograph signings and visits with friends and family.
