SIXTY YEARS AGO
People passing the four local high schools will probably stop and shake their heads in bewilderment at the strange new game the females of the high school crowd are now playing. It is called field hockey.
Elizabeth Dyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Dyer, of Minnedosa, has been awarded the Beta Sigma scholarship, Minnedosa chapter.

FIFTY YEARS AGO
The 12-storey “towers” residence at Brandon University, which houses 280 men and women, will now officially be called McMaster Hall in recognition of Brandon University’s historical ties with McMaster University.
Minnedosa’s Arnold Nicholl captured the Royal Bank trophy in the annual fall tournament at the Minnedosa Golf Club.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Meighen, Haddad and Co., a Brandon law firm that has represented the city for 35 years, is resigning.
Senior employees have left the financially troubled Westcan Conveyor and Belting Ltd. to form a new fertilizer storage container company.
A Manitoba government study says motorists can save two per cent in fuel costs by using gasohol rather than conventional gasoline.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
A four-year-old boy was plucked from the Souris River this weekend by Larry Heppner of Winnipeg, who had stopped at Victoria Park for a picnic with his family while on his way to Alberta. Heppner dove into the frigid water three times before finding the youngster. The boy was not breathing when pulled to shore, but he was revived and has since recovered.
Centra Gas wants to increase consumer natural gas rates by 17 per cent next year. Gas prices have gone up 30 to 35 per cent since last year.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The West Nile virus has struck again, with an unnamed man from the Assiniboine Regional Health Authority being the second known death in Manitoba. The patient, in his 70s, died from West Nile virus neurological syndrome and also had an underlying chronic medical condition.
TEN YEARS AGO
The sole declared independent candidate for the upcoming Brandon-Souris byelection is considering a run for the federal Liberal Party nomination, as perhaps his best chance to ensure that the Conservative Party does not win the riding. “I have had some calls from some Liberals asking whether I would consider throwing my hat in their nomination ring. At this point, all I’m prepared to say is that I will do anything to ensure that we do not elect a Conservative MP in this area,” Killarney-Turtle Mountain Mayor Rick Pauls told the Sun yesterday. “It’s the worst political move that I feel we could do for Brandon-Souris.”
