The government’s Aug. 16 agreement with the U.S. to acquire nuclear warheads for Canadian forces has come under its first opposition attack in the Commons. NDP Leader T.C. Douglas accused the government of an affront to Parliament for committing Canada without putting the pact before Parliament for approval.

Ed McGill, the Progressive Conservative MLA for Brandon West, will be the Tory critic in the Manitoba legislature on education, college and university affairs and the cabinet committee on health, education and social planning. Brandon’s CIBC Run for the Cure drew about 400 participants in efforts to advance breast cancer research. The event held on Sunday at the Riverbank Discovery Centre raised $51,156. The funds will assist the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to support breast cancer research, education, diagnosis and treatment.
TEN YEARS AGO
A boy has been put on probation for taking part in a vandalism spree that caused thousands of dollars in damage when ball bearings were fired from a car with a slingshot. He is one of three boys to be charged and one of two to be sentenced in the ball bearing drive-bys that, fortunately, only damaged windows and not people.
About half of the 40 children seized from an Old Order Mennonite community in Manitoba could be back with their parents by the end of the month, a lawyer for some of the families said Friday. The children were taken by social workers in June after 13 people in the orthodox community were charged with child abuse — including alleged assaults using cattle prods, whips and leather straps.
The Canadian dollar closed higher amid fading hopes for a quick end to a partial U.S. government shutdown that was in its fourth day on Friday. The loonie gained 0.32 of a cent to 97.16 cents US.
