Forty-six-year-old President John F. Kennedy, 36th president of the United States, was shot to death today in Dallas, Texas, by a hidden assassin armed with a high-powered rifle. Also wounded in the motorcade was Gov. John Connally of Texas.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Woody Hills Mark 2nd and his stablemate Woody Hills Mark 14 are the best pair of Shorthorn bulls in North America, according to their placings as grand champion and reserve grand champion at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. The two were shown by Harold Poole of Kemnay and Keith Poole.
FORTY YEARS AGO
John Bucklaschuk, minister of the MPIC, was in Brandon yesterday to present Sharon Black, her daughter Rachael and son Paul with memberships in the Seat Belt Survivors Club after surviving a car accident because they were wearing their seatbelts.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The Optimist Club of Brandon honoured eight young people ages 14 to 18 who were nominated by clubs and organizations they belong to or assist. First-prize winner was 18-year-old Colin Malmstrom for his extensive involvement with the 82nd Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and his dedication to youngsters and the less fortunate.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
City police are preparing to introduce a new weapon in the fight against crime. With a few simple keystrokes, police on the street will soon be able to receive instant instructions from their dispatchers, see where every other patrol unit is and view aerial photos of a potential crime scene. The Brandon Police Service expects to equip 13 cruisers with specialized laptop computers, or mobile work stations, by the end of January, said Insp. Harley Bryson.
TEN YEARS AGO
Long after the dust had settled around the Conservative nomination in Brandon-Souris, Larry Maguire was pressed about how he became his party’s candidate. However, Maguire revealed little when he was asked several questions during the all-candidates forum at the Keystone Centre Amphitheatre last night — the final debate before voters cast their ballots on Monday.
