A record total of 468,000 bushels were handled by the Reston pool elevator, it was revealed at the recent annual meeting of the Reston Pool Elevator Association. The total resulted in another record — a surplus of $17,162.12.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Fifty-five private and eight commercial students received their wings at the Brandon Flying Club’s annual wings presentation ceremonies last night.
Breslauer and Warren Jewellers Ltd. will move from its present location, at 904 Rosser Ave., to the main floor of the Rosenman building — Scotia Towers, on the corner of 10th Street and Rosser Avenue.
The Brandon University Bobbies won their first Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball game in two years last night on home court, stopping the University of Manitoba Bisonettes 50-47.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Quarterback Joe Barnes came off the bench yesterday to direct the Toronto Argonauts to an 18-17 win over the B.C. Lions in the Grey Cup.
Six astronauts, the largest space crew ever, rocketed toward Earth orbit aboard the U.S. space shuttle Columbia yesterday for nine days of round-the-clock science experiments in the west European space lab. The crew includes a West German, the first non-American launched in a U.S. spacecraft.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
There were about 50 entries in this year’s Santa Claus parade, and organizers were pleased with the response to a new route that spread out the crowd more evenly.
The Edmonton Eskimos defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 33-23 to win the Grey Cup in Calgary.
Diane Eastman was in Winnipeg this weekend to receive the Lieutenant Governor’s Literacy Award for her work as an instructor with the adult upgrading program at the Brandon Friendship Centre.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Two cattle herds near Riding Mountain National Park have been quarantined after one cow from each farm reacted to bovine tuberculosis tests. More than 240 cattle in the RM of Hillsburg were quarantined earlier this week after one cow in the herd reacted to a comparative cervical test.
Brandon businessman Don Kille says the time is now for Westman to have an MP sitting on the government side of the House of Commons, and he’ll embark on a “long, hard journey” to land that job. “I’m really not afraid to run against anyone at this point in time, and that includes Rick Borotsik,” Kille told an assembled crowd yesterday after announcing he’ll seek the Liberal nomination for Brandon-Souris.
TEN YEARS AGO
An Ontario senior — whose hobby business landed him in legal trouble when he was caught with prohibited knives at a Brandon gun show — has been given a shot at maintaining a clean criminal record. Robert William McGillivray said he didn’t know that the knives he was offering for sale were illegal.
For the first time in its 15-year history, the Association of Manitoba Municipalities will take the provincial government to court. However, one day after AMM delegates voted in favour of taking legal action against the NDP government over Bill 33, there are still more questions than answers regarding what that will look like.
