The 50th anniversary of Brandon’s Sokol Gymnastic Association was marked recently at a banquet and social evening with more than 250 in attendance.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Vincent Massey High School’s gymnasium became a concert hall yesterday afternoon when the composer of “Moody Manitoba Morning,” Boissevain’s Rick Neufeld and string player Don Zueff of Ste. Anne, stopped at the school on their tour of southwestern Manitoba.
King George School choir sang out as Mayor Bill Wilton turned on the lights between Seventh and Ninth streets on Rosser Avenue in the official Lighting Up ceremony sponsored by the Brandon Downtown Merchants Association.

City council decided recently to operate the transit system on Dec. 27 despite the fact it is a statutory holiday for bus drivers.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Bill and Sue-On Hillman have released their 10th album and first compact disc entitled “24 Of Our Best.” Its release will coincide with the 24th anniversary of their restaurant Soo’s on 10th Street.
Canola production hit a record 5.4 million tonnes this year despite generally cool, wet weather and a delayed harvest.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
The scent of burning sweet grass lingers in St. Hedwig’s Roman Catholic Church as members of Métis, Cree, Sioux, Dakota and Ojibway nations came together to worship in Brandon yesterday, during the area’s first aboriginal mass.
TEN YEARS AGO
The city is proposing a tax hike of 2.85 per cent over last year. The 2014 proposal includes increasing the operating budget by $2.9 million to $75.2 million and according to city manager Scott Hildebrand, the budget will include substantial costs incurred by improvements to the Brandon Municipal Airport, funding Sunday bus service, addressing infrastructure woes and the city’s housing strategy.
Donations to the Brandon & District United Way have slumped compared to this time last year, according to its CEO. The annual fundraising campaign, which kicked off at the end of September, is halfway through its campaign to raise $777,777.77 but corporate employee group campaign donations are down substantially.
