THIRTY YEARS AGO

Four Brandon citizens were recently presented with commemorative medals for their contribution to their community and Canada. They are: Harold Weitman for his assistance with many native groups; Eugena Moore for her writing on seniors’ activities; Audrey Silvius for her work with organizing Tools for Peace and Joseph Slomiany for his lengthy service with Sokol Gymnastic Association and leadership in developing Sokol Manor seniors home.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

With the smell of coffee lingering in the air yesterday at Scarlatti’s Belgian Chocolates and Cappuccino Bar on Rosser Avenue, patrons were treated to Christmas carols played by six harpists from the Music Studio Harp Ensemble.

The U.S. government raised the national threat level to orange today, indicating a high risk of terrorist attack, and said threat indicators are “perhaps greater now than at any point” since Sept. 11, 2001, with strikes possible during the holidays.

TEN YEARS AGO

Dozens of children apprehended from their Old Order Mennonite community will not be home for Christmas. Two families have had a total of six children returned to their homes, but nearly 40 remain in foster care months after they were apprehended by Child and Family Services.

For the first time, the Lieutenant Governor’s Winter Festival will fall on the same weekend as Dakota Nation Winterfest. But the two events won’t be in competition with one another, according to Brandon Riverbank Development and tourism services manager Lois MacDonald.

A Brandon University radio astronomer may soon have the honour of naming a new discovery in the night sky. Tyler Foster, of the department of physics and astronomy, pinpointed what he believes to be the remains of an exploded star, a supernova remnant, during research this past summer at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in B.C.
