SIXTY YEARS AGO

The rural municipality of Morton, at the final council meeting of the year, honoured Coun. W.G. Dickson on his retirement. Dickson served as councillor of ward three for the past 26 years.

FIFTY YEARS AGO

John Diefenbaker will be honoured Feb. 26 at the Keystone Centre for his many contributions in the field of civil rights during his years of public service. Premier Ed Schreyer announced from Winnipeg today the City of Brandon will declare Feb. 26 John and Olive Diefenbaker Day as part of Brotherhood Month.

Hartney’s nine-bed hospital is expected to be back in operation later this month after being closed since Nov. 30.

FORTY YEARS AGO

A fire Jan. 1 destroyed a restored Case threshing machine and two antique tractors at the Manitoba Agricultural Museum in Austin. Two functioning tractors, tools and various workshop equipment were also destroyed. Damage was estimated at about $20,000.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Kirsty Henderson, a former Brandonite, and now marketing manager for Nintendo of Canada Ltd., was one of two Canadian women selected by Trimark Investment Management Inc. to be featured in Appreciating Your Worth, a program designed for the marketing of financial services to women. To acknowledge her participation, Trimark made a donation of $3,000 to the charity of Henderson’s choice, which was the YWCA Westman Women’s Shelter.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A new apartment complex is set to rise on the North Hill this spring. Von Ast Management Inc. is building a three-building, 24-unit apartment block on Braecrest Drive, east of Northern Pines golf course. Paul Johnson of Von Ast hopes to have the new buildings ready for rental by spring.

Twelve rural municipalities within the federal Brandon-Souris riding have united their voices in an effort to get federal funding for a federally inspected slaughterhouse. A location will not be decided upon until a feasibility study is complete, but some are rooting for the Westman area. This is the third proposal that aims to bring a federally inspected plant to the area.

TEN YEARS AGO

Rob O’Connor’s agricultural background will serve him well as the new general manager of the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba, according to outgoing CEO Karen Oliver. As of Feb. 17, O’Connor will replace Oliver, who announced in October she would be stepping down.

Floyd Buhler of Kenton has been nominated to carry the Liberal banner in the Arthur-Virden provincial byelection this month.
