Unrestricted Sunday shopping will go out with a whimper at the end of this month after coming in with a bang almost 18 months ago. City councillors ended a long period of debate by rejecting Sunday shopping in a 6-4 vote early this morning. The move signals the end of wide-open Sunday shopping as of Feb. 28 and means retailers will have to revert back to the old law that restricted Sunday opening to stores with four or fewer employees.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Tom Keep never imagined Brandon’s first cultural festival would be as popular as it has proven to be. “Pretty well every pavilion has sold out of their food and is going back for more, more, more,” says Keep, the project co-ordinator for the Lieutenant Governor’s Westman Regional Winter Festival. “The numbers have just blown us away. We’re very impressed.” Seven pavilions showcasing the best of their unique cultures filled Brandon community centres and other venues Thursday through Saturday. This is the first year the event has been organized, and already Keep is looking toward next year.
TEN YEARS AGO
Eight months away from the Brandon municipal election, two councillors have declared their intentions — Coun. Jeff Fawcett (Assiniboine) plans to run, while Coun. Murray Blight (Victoria) is retiring. The other eight councillors are still on the fence, but many are hinting that they plan to seek another term.
Jay Leno’s farewell “Tonight Show” drew the late-night show’s biggest audience in more than 15 years, NBC said Friday. A total of 14.6 million viewers tuned in Thursday to see Leno wrap up his 22 years as host of “Tonight,” according to Nielsen company ratings released by NBC.
A Russia in search of global vindication kicked off the Sochi Olympics Friday looking more like a Russia that likes to party, with a pulse-raising opening ceremony about fun and sports instead of terrorism, coddling despots and gay rights. And that’s just the way Vladimir Putin wants these Winter Games to be.
