SIXTY YEARS AGO
Brian K. Cameron and Tom M. Cobbs of Melita were presented with Queen’s Scout Awards at special ceremonies in Winnipeg recently.
The administrative board of Wilson Memorial Hospital in Melita announced recently that Dr. E. Kennedy of Bissett will establish his practice in Melita May 1.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Dr. John Thomas Mills, a well-known Brandon dentist and active community worker, died suddenly in Banff, Alta., today. He was 49. Dr. Mills was best known for his work in the YMCA as he was one of the most active workers for its development. He was also active in the development of the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium and Keystone Centre.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Manitoba Hog Producers Marketing Board has decided to clamp controls on swine moving south of the border. Delegates voted almost unanimously to enforce a system in which all hog exporters would be required to obtain a permit from the board before shipping hogs across the international border.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The former United Grain Growers elevator, which graced the skyline at Pacific Avenue and 16th Street for decades, crashed to the ground just before 8 a.m. yesterday. As the day progressed, heavy machinery broke up the building, the remnants of which will be trucked away.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
At the school board meeting, Fleming’s Save Our School committee presented a community impact survey on a motion Brandon trustees passed in July. The motion means Fleming School will close effective June 2005, resulting in the transport of 169 Fleming students to Earl Oxford, located about seven blocks away at 18th Street and Victoria Avenue.
TEN YEARS AGO
It could become the Corral Centre of the south, if the vision for 50 acres on the outskirts of Brandon becomes a reality. Real estate company Colliers International is advertising the South Brandon Village on its website — a proposed commercial development that can accommodate “two major anchors,” a number of mid-box retailers, as well as “pad sites for restaurants, pubs and financial institutions together with a proposed hotel and convention centre.” The proposed site is located south of Patricia Avenue and west of Highway 10.
In the end, experience and execution trumped raw talent and youthful exuberance. The Edmonton Oil Kings snuffed out any notion of a comeback by Brandon in their second-round Western Hockey League playoff series, downing the Wheat Kings 5-1 on Friday night at Rexall Place to clinch the best-of-seven series four games to one.
