TODAY

10:15 to 11 a.m. — Storytime at the Brandon Public Library (710 Rosser Ave.) for ages 18 months to five years takes place every Thursday. The presence of a caregiver or parent is required. No registration necessary.

Noon — The Brandon General Museum and Archives (BGMA) and the Downtown Ambassadors present the Historic Downtown Walking Tour. The tour will leave from Princess Park shortly after noon. 10 a.m. — Come and enjoy one of the largest street festivals in the province — the Morden Corn and Apple Festival held in Morden this weekend. Featuring street vendors, flea market, crafts and artisan alley, busking stations, midway, petting zoo, Rendezvous Craft Beer corner; dance battle, free apple juice and free corn. 10 a.m. — The Brandon Public Library’s Downtown Branch (710 Rosser Ave.) is hosting Escape Room in the Library: Art Heist every Saturday in August. The library has started an art collection and has acquired a priceless artifact … do you think you have what it takes to steal it? Gather your team and test your wits by cracking codes, deciphering clues and navigating puzzles to pull off the ultimate theft. 6:45 p.m. — The Clear Lake Country Destination Enrichment Organization announces the Summer Sunset Free Concert Series starting this month. We have two major Canadian artists performing at a free, open-air, family-friendly event. The concerts take place on the shores of Clear Lake in Wasagaming’s central park. Tonight we have Owen Riegling, a country artist from Ontario with opening act The Route 10 Collective with the music of The Band’s Last Waltz. 6:30 p.m. — Women in Harmony rehearses on Mondays at Trinity United Church in Brandon (1515 Sixth St.). Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — In honour of the RCAF’s 100th anniversary, the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War, has switched to summer hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week at the Brandon Municipal Airport. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War-vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. RCAF members who lost their lives during the Second World War are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Memorial wall.

Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Currently on exhibit is “The Sound of History: Bands and Musicians of Western Manitoba” until Sept. 7. Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June). Admission: $6 for adults; $5 for seniors and youth (6-18); family (up to two adults and three children), $12; children under five free. Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Our Second World War vehicle exhibit includes eight military vehicles used by Canadians during the Second World War. Military vehicles provided firepower, logistical support, mobility and protection for the Canadian army, enhancing their effectiveness during the Second World War. Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first, the AGSM boasts two art galleries, studios for youth and adult classes and a gift shop that supports more than 60 local Manitoba artists and artisans throughout Canada. New exhibit: “Me, I Think,” with Manitoba artist and author Craig Russell, is a series of nearly 100 selfies taken outside the vernacular of social media. The exhibition will be on display in our Kayes Community Gallery until Nov. 7. In the Main Gallery: “Of Armour Bespoke, Of Fabric, Of Skin, Of Within,” until Aug. 24. Summer hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday; Thursdays open until 9 p.m. and closed Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays until August. Admission is free to visit the AGSM. Wasagaming Community Arts (110 Wasagaming Dr.) — Our final exhibition of the season, features the incredibly talented Richelle Treloar, Brody McQueen, Jamie Dixon and Tengnamoe. This exhibition runs until Sept. 3. We are open daily from 10 am. To 5 p.m.

Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 204-554-0023. 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday; closed on weekends.

Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The museum house was built in 1888 by James F. Frame, a hardware and lumber merchant and prominent citizen in the community. The main house depicts how a family in the Victorian era would have lived. We also have two additional annexes and a coach house available for viewing. UPCOMING EVENTS

Aug. 29 — CFB Shilo Community Recreation and Shilo MFRC are hosting the CFB Shilo Fun Run 2024 from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Become a human canvas as you complete a five-kilometre run or walk where you will be blasted by every colour of the rainbow along the way. Free to attend. No registration required. Donations toward cancer research accepted. Donations of $5 or more will received a white T-shirt. Hot meal and refreshments after the run.

Aug. 29 — Practical Paint Night takes place at Chez Angela (29C 10th St.) from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. Just like paint night but instead on painting on a canvas you paint on a canvas tote bag. Registration includes all supplies, tote bag and instructions. Cost is $35. To register, call 204-729-2471.

Aug. 29 — Douglas Dream Drives Show and Shine will be held in Douglas from 5 to 8 p.m. Classic muscle cars, hot rods, custom cars, trucks and bikes. Free entry. Barbecue from 5 to 8 p.m. Raffles and 50/50.

Aug. 31 — Brandon and Area Gone Too Soon and Substance Use Awareness takes place at Dinsdale Park. Starting at 5 p.m., we will be sharing food (donated by Montana’s), making flags, offering naloxone training and learning ways to help. At 7 p.m., there will be a vigil. We will supply a candle so if you wish to bring a photo of a loved one, a song or a poem to honour those gone too soon.

Aug. 31 — Come join us on the patio for the last concert of the season at Poor Michael’s Emporium (322 Highway 10, Onanole) featuring Ego Spank with musicians Murray Pulver, Gilles Fournier, Marc Arnould and Daniel Roy, all well known in the Winnipeg and International music scene. Aug. 31 — Minnedosa will be hosting its first ever concert in the Sunrise Credit Union Centre (127 6th Ave. NW) featuring Brett Kissel. Sept. 4 (with registration by Aug. 30) — Beginners bridge lessons will begin on Sept. 4 and run every Wednesday morning from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. at Seniors for Seniors Centre (311 Park Ave. East). This is a chance for everyone from beginners to slightly experienced players to develop and practise their bridge skills. No previous knowledge is necessary and you do not need a partner. Sept. 5 — The City of Brandon Parks & Recreation Services presents the world renowned Royal Canadian Air Force Band live at the Fusion Credit Union Stage at the Riverbank! The show starts at 6:30 p.m. and is free for all to attend.

Sept. 5 — Cruise Night takes place in downtown Brandon on Rosser Avenue between Sixth Street and 13th Street from 6 to 9 p.m. People wishing to show their vehicles are encouraged to enter the event at the intersection of Rosser Avenue and 13th Street. All vehicles are welcome. Free to participants and spectators. Presented by Brandon & Area Car Enthusiasts (BACE), Kelleher Ford, Cal Jackson of Integral Realty and Off The Wall Signs.

Sept. 5 — Join us at T’s Dining and Lounge (235 Nelson St. West) in Virden for a comedy show featuring The Bad Apples, the comedic duo of Nelson Mayer and Clayton T. Stewart with special guest host Justin (J-Bomb) Fillion. Doors open at 7 p.m. Show at 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 and available through Eventbrite.

Sept. 7 — MADD Brandon and Area with sponsor the Brandon Keystone Centre are hosting their fifth annual Strides for Change colour run/walk at the Keystone Centre. Run begins at 4:30 p.m. Registration at 3 p.m. Arrive by 4 p.m. to sign in and get your dye. There will be a 2.5-kilometre and five-kilometre options. This event also includes food trucks, music, bouncy castles, yoga warmup and prizes. Adults (12 years and older) $25; children 2 to 11 years $5 and under 2 are free. Sept. 7 — Festival of Joy will be held at St. Augustine School grounds (330 Third St.) from 1 to 6:30 p.m. featuring family fun and games, live music, community potluck, prayer tent, mass, praise and worship. No charge. Bring a lawn chair and water bottle.

Sept. 7 — Brandon University Men’s and Women’s soccer home game takes place today at the Healthy Living Centre against Providence. Men’s at 1 p.m.; women at 3:15 p.m. $5 general admission; kids 13 and under as well as BU and ACC students with valid student ID are free.

Sept. 7-8 — Southview Flea Market and Market Garden takes place at Southview Industrial Park, Building No. 2 (Patricia Avenue East known as the old duck barns) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Admission is $3; 12 and under are free. We have a gathering of vendors and nostalgic enthusiasts that sell and purchase artwork, rare collectibles, homemade goods and vintage treasures. Sept. 7-8 — Gossip in the Graveyard Community Fundraising Event takes place Sept. 7 at 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. and Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. This two-hour interactive walking tour provides an opportunity to take a step back in time and meet the colourful and inspiring individuals who have helped shape Brandon into the city we know today. The characters of Brandon’s past will literally come alive to tell their tales. Tickets are $20 with all proceeds being donated to The Women’s Resource Centre. For tickets, call 204-0694.

Sept. 8 — Westman Jams meets at Eastside Eatery (1451 Richmond Ave.) from 2 to 5 p.m. Join the Jam and play, sing, listen or dance. Have some fun and help us raise money for the Reg Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, which financially assists local students attending the International Music Camp at the International Peace Garden.

Sept. 8 — The 21st annual Wag-A-Tail Walk-A-Thon in support of the Brandon Humane Society will take place at Kin Park (First Street and Aberdeen Avenue) from 10 a.m. to noon. Free barbecue to follow with the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Sept. 8 — Brandon Downtown Biz, Promises Bridal and Recovery Skateshop are proud to host the Downtown Family Block Party at Princess Park from 1 to 5 p.m. There will be live entertainment, games, face painting, rock painting, skateboarding demos and lessons, barbecue by Community Futures Westman and much more and it is all free.

Sept. 9 — A Death and Taxes seminar hosted by Stanley Park Lawn Bowlers takes place at the Stanley Park Clubhouse (15th and Princess Ave.) at 7 p.m. Topics include ways to reduce costs for estates, tools to help organize estate paperwork and for reducing delays and costs for estates. Sept. 12-14 — The Rotary Fall Book Sale takes place in the Imperial Ballroom at the Victoria Inn (3550 Victoria Ave.) with more than 75,000 books. Something for everyone. Free book for every child. Free admission. Please bring your own book bags. All funds raised support Brandon Westman and International Rotary projects. Sept. 12 and 13 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sept 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sept. 13-15 — Paddlefest will be held at the Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre (545 Conservation Dr.). This three-day event features various activities and experiences for paddlers and outdoor enthusiasts, including exploring on the water, expanding passion and knowledge and engaging with the outdoor community.

Sept. 13-15 — Brandon Food Truck Warz takes place on the Keystone Centre grounds with 26 food trucks from all over Manitoba. This event will take place rain or shine. Family carnival featuring rides and games from Select Shows will also be on site as well as a beer gardens. Admission is $5 (cash only) for adults; children 12 and under are free. Free parking. Hours: Sept. 13 and 14 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sept. 15 — One of Canada’s largest and most beloved annual events, the Terry Fox Run will take place on the front lawn of Clark Hall as part of the Brandon University Homecoming 2024 and BU125. The Terry Fox Run has raised more than $850 million for the fight against cancer since the Marathon of Hope started in 1980. Register, join a team or donate at run.terryfox.ca/55825.
