BRANDON UNIVERSITY

• Brandon University reopens today for Truth and Reconciliation Week, with Beading with Barb and Kevin taking place from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m, and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Indigenous Peoples’ Centre. Join Anishinaabe elder Barb Blind, fine arts professor Kevin McKenzie and the Beading Babes. All levels of beaders, from new to experienced, are welcome. Beading with Nicole and Joan, led by Métis inclusion co-ordinator Nicole Braun and Métis elder Joan Church, will follow on Wednesday at noon in the IPC.

• September Russell of the University of Regina will present “Poet, Take up Your Lute: Narrative Disruption in Rebecca Clark’s Sonata for Viola and Piano” in an Out of Bounds Lecture Series event today, beginning at 12:40 p.m., in the R.D. Bell Hall. The public is welcome to this event, which includes a lecture recital with Katherine Achtzehner, viola, and Danielle Guina, piano.

• Join Jace Pratt from the Men’s Resource Centre for Dakota Star Teachings on Wednesday, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Kavanagh Courtyard. Pratt will lead a session of stories and star gazing with telescopes.

• The call of an owl becomes an omen for Eddie, a former residential school student, in “Owl Calling,” a new play by BU professors Darrell Racine and Dale Lakevold. But what kind of omen will it be for a man who has just opened up about his residential school experience? A staged reading of the play will take place on Thursday at 7 p.m., at the Evans Theatre.

• Waasa Gaa Inaabateg Department of Visual Art and The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba invite you to join us for the Catalogue Launch celebrating BU professor Kevin McKenzie’s new exhibition. The launch begins on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., at the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art.

• Kristen Kieta of the University of Northern British Columbia will talk about the impacts of wildfire on watershed soils and sediments in a Science Seminar Series talk on Friday, at 2:30 p.m., in Room 4-47 of the John R. Brodie Science Centre.

• Matt Tetreault of the University of Manitoba will explore what it means to write within a Métis literary tradition in a Faculty of Arts Speaker Series event on Friday from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in the Gathering Space of the John E. Robbins Library.

• The Bobcats soccer teams host Canadian Mennonite University on Saturday, with the men’s match beginning at 1 p.m., and the women following at 3:15 p.m., at the Healthy Living Centre. The BU women’s rugby team is also in action, entertaining the University of Regina on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m., at John Reilly Field.

ASSINIBOINE COLLEGE

• The Assiniboine College Students’ Association has a number of events planned throughout Truth and Reconciliation Week to create awareness and honour the commitment to reconciliation. You can find these events and learning opportunities at accstudents.com/events.

• The ACSA is hosting a Halloween-themed dodgeball tournament on Oct. 26 that will take place in the gym of the Victoria Avenue East campus from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This event is open to all students and the community, and individuals must register in teams. Participants are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes, but face masks or anything hanging off costumes are prohibited due to safety reasons.
