G.L. Wilkinson, who was born in Moose Jaw, Sask., was installed in office at the Brandon National Employment Service. W.G. Manson was elected president of the board of directors of the YMCA. He succeeds J.E. Reid, who has held office for the past two years.
FIFTY YEARS AGO
Pioneer 10, travelling at record speed, raced on an almost-perfect course today toward the distant planet Jupiter and an eternal journey through interstellar space. Flying with the spacecraft was a message for alien civilizations that might exist beyond the solar system.
FORTY YEARS AGO
Virden’s Save the Aud committee has all but reached its goal of $75,000 for restoration work on the 73-year-old auditorium theatre. Recent fundraising drives have raised $69,000.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
Warm temperatures attracted large crowds to several Sundog Ice Carnival events this weekend in the city. Winners in the Olde Fashioned Beard Growing Contest were: Cam Weir, best moustache; Murray Lane, strangest beard; Dwight Verboom, fullest beard; Norm Matheson, best beard; and Piston Ring Service and Supply was named best beard team.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Curling enthusiasts leaving the Keystone Centre after watching Team Canada win it all today couldn’t heap enough praise on organizers and on the city. More than 62,000 fans came out to the Scott, which ended with Colleen Jones’ 8-5 win over Saskatchewan’s Sherry Anderson.
TEN YEARS AGO
The Brandon Regional Health Authority is partnering with Assiniboine Community College to deal with the shortage of health-care aides. For the first time, the Brandon RHA is offering people the chance to become a certified health-care aide while on the job. Twelve individuals have been selected for the program, which begins on Monday with three weeks of “intensive training” in the classroom.
Police say a heat gun used to thaw frozen pipes in the Linda Rose restaurant ignited a fire that left three people homeless in Shoal Lake. The fire started about 8:30 a.m. in the landmark restaurant and destroyed an attached residence belonging to owners Linda and Doug Anstey and an elderly boarder. All three escaped uninjured.

Brandon is about to get a great big new Asian buffet-style restaurant. Located at the old Aunt Sara’s location at 201 18th St. North, the restaurant is set to open in June. Mandy Lei, who owns and is opening the restaurant, called Ye’s Buffet, with her husband, said this will be the fifth restaurant the couple has opened and operates.
