A senior industry official expects the recession and the GST will take a $25-million to $30-million bite out of Manitoba’s restaurant industry this year.

Russian President Boris Yeltsin pushed ahead with reform yesterday, issuing an order to privatize state land but drawing worried protests over his plans to eliminate state control over prices.

 

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A Brandon restaurant owner is giving up a day’s business receipts to support the family of slain RCMP Const. Dennis Strongquill. Sasha’s Ukrainian Restaurant owner Mel Mott is hoping to break a single-day sales record on Jan. 4, when all proceeds will be donated to a fund in support of Strongquill’s family.

Manitoba’s minimum wage will go up by 25 cents this spring, says Labour Minister Becky Barrett. Barrett said the minimum wage will rise across the board to $6.50 on April 1 from the current $6.25. It will increase by another 25 cents to $6.75 in April 2003, she said. John Godard, chairman of the province’s minimum wage review committee, said he was disappointed by the announcement.

 

TEN YEARS AGO

Yet another semi-trailer has had a close encounter with the Kemnay bridge. It has become common for semis to smack into the bridge despite numerous signs, and sensors connected to lights that warn drivers when their rig is too tall. This time, the driver just missed the bridge itself but one of the trailers he was hauling jack-knifed.

Lewis Parker of Effect and Cause rocked out with his bandmates for a large crowd at Snow Show 2 at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium on Wednesday evening. The local all-ages show also included Brandon bands Take With Audio, Neon Blunt, Bassment Revival and Sebastian Owl, as well as a few other performers between sets.
