Although city officials say that they are confident in the dikes along the north side of the Assiniboine River, they have set up an evacuation plan for residents in that area.

Homes are being visited with information about that plan, which includes areas just north of Kirkcaldy Drive, up to about Ross Avenue. This is not an order to evacuate, which wil be indicated by Brandon’s emergency sirens.

The city sent out this information to affected residents:

Residents are being told how and where to evacuate in case of a dike breach on the north-side of the river.
Residents are being told how and where to evacuate in case of a dike breach on the north-side of the river.

The following information outlines the evacuation plan for residents north of the Assiniboine River.

Should a dangerous situation involving a breach of the north dike along Kirkcaldy Drive occur, the Brandon Police Service will order residents living in the area north of the river up to Ross Avenue and Galbraith Drive, to evacuate away from the river immediately.

You will be asked to be prepared, act quickly and calmly, and leave the area with essential items.

There are two possible scenarios:

1. If you hear the emergency alerting siren but there is no water in your immediate area, you should:

  • Go indoors;
  • Check local media;
  • Follow directions.

2. If you observe water in your area you should immediately evacuate:

  • For residents living east of the Canada Games Sportsplex and south of Ross Avenue using vehicles, proceed to either Knowlton Drive or 1st Street north and head north.
  • For residents living west of the Canada Games Sportsplex and south of Galbraith Drive using vehicles, proceed to 18th Street through the emergency access located at the eastern fence line of the Corral Center located at Fraser Crescent and Cater Drive. Proceed through the Corral Center to 18th Street and head north.
  • Driving on Kircaldy Drive could be hazardous, attempt to proceed north on intersecting streets as soon as possible.

If travelling by vehicle use Highway #1 and #1A through Kemnay and report to the Reception Centre in the Canada Room of the Keystone Center.

For residents unable to use a vehicle, proceed to the North Hill Inn, where public transit will be located.

A map of the affected area and evacuation routes is posted above.
