Using a night sky cell phone application, I had been watching for forecasts of strong aurora borealis over the past few weeks, and this Labour Day weekend has not disappointed.

On Saturday night, the forecast was particularly strong, so I set out for one of my favourite haunts along the shores of Lake Clementi, which is just along the southern edge of the Brandon Hills.

Most of the images are open shutter for about nine to 12 seconds, using a bulb setting on the Brandon Sun camera.

If you have some time to get out under the night skies, and the clouds stay away, the aurora forecast remains strong for the next several nights, including tonight. Find yourself a very dark sky away from any large communities and light pollution, and let your eyes get accustomed to the lack of light. You’ll probably see some stunning skies.

Only seven years after last hosting the country’s top men’s curling tournament, the City of Brandon has made a bid to bring the Brier back in 2028.

The host for the tournament, which will be held from Feb. 25 to March 5, will be announced by Curling Canada in the fall.

“I like to think that we’ve put in the best bid we possibly can, and that we stand a very good chance,” said Jennifer Watson, executive director of Brandon First, a non-profit organization that promotes Brandon as a host city for events.

Bidding for the popular 18-team event closed at the end of May, and the winning city is expected to be notified confidentially by Sept. 30.

City of Brandon crews were busy pumping rainwater on Thursday after a storm dumped nearly 27 millimetres on the city overnight and on Wednesday.

Despite the deluge, the Assiniboine River continued to recede on Thursday, measuring at 1,178.25 feet at 10:15 a.m. — more than a foot lower than the 1,179.49-foot crest early Monday morning.

“Last night we received a thunderstorm that came through the city, and when people woke up this morning, there was water accumulating and pocketing in many areas on the inside of the dike,” emergency co-ordinator Tobin Praznik said on Thursday.

Pumps were running in low-lying areas of the city in the morning, moving water back into the river.

Dozens of highways still out of commission

Crews continue to assess flood damage and repair roads and highways as conditions allow, after historic precipitation washed away many routes.

Brandon police arrested suspects on Wednesday in two unrelated assaults.

The first arrest came after a woman told police her ex-boyfriend had assaulted her during an argument.

A 27-year-old woman went to Brandon Police Service headquarters on July 8 and told police she and her ex-boyfriend were having an argument about their relationship and finances when he allegedly slapped her in the face several times, BPS said in a news release.

She also told police he grabbed her arm and threw her to the ground, BPS said.
