IN LOCAL HISTORY

• 60 YEARS AGO — Irwin Steen and his Carberry foursome of Byron Steen, Cliff Nelson and Neil Olmstead cap-tured the District 19 championship in the Massey-Ferguson Curlorama playdowns at the Brandon Curling Club this week and will now advance to Neepawa for the modified round-robin competition for the provincial title.

• 50 YEARS AGO — Bryan and Mel Smith combined for five goals as the Hamiota Huskies whipped Kenton Cougars 10-3 in the first game of the best-of-three NorthCentral Hockey League playoffs. Bryan scored three goals and Mel two to pace the winners. Ron Ramsay also scored two goals for the Huskies, with Bruce Cowling, Ray Brethour and Darwin Hamilton notching singles. John Wright, Gerry Joynt and Lawrence Daniel replied for Kenton.

• 40 YEARS AGO — Bernie Martine scored four goals, including three in the third period, to lead Spectrum Sportsmen to a 6-3 win over Ste. Rose Royals in a SouthWest Hockey league game. Gord Kaluzniak, who had four assists and Randy Markewich also scored for the Sportsmen.

• 30 YEARS AGO — Danny O’Greysik had two goals and Trent Thibert added a goal and six assists to lead the Souris Elks to an 8-6 triumph over the Pierson Bruins in South West Hockey League action.

• 20 YEARS AGO — The Neelin Spartans, the province’s No.1-ranked 3A basketball team, was not going to let Matt Zeiler set any scoring records. Zeiler, who scored a provincial record 77 points in a single game two weeks ago, scored 22 for the Edward Schreyer Barons in an 85-74 loss to the Spartans in the final of the Portage Invitational.

• 10 YEARS AGO — A season that began with promise ended in devastating fashion for the second-ranked Brandon University Bobcats women’s volleyball team, who lost in straight matches in the best-of-three quarterfinal series, falling 3-1 (29-31, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19) to the unranked University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat at the Healthy Living Centre.
