Balanced Winnipeg offence takes down Brandon

Thomas Friesen 3 minute read Friday, Jan. 9, 2026

The Winnipeg Wesmen showed there’s more than one way to skin a Bobcat.

Six of the seven players who hit the floor hit double-digits in scoring. The balanced attack carried Winnipeg (8-3) to an 86-78 victory over Brandon University (6-7) in their Canada West men’s basketball game at the Healthy Living Centre on Friday night.

“That’s what makes our team so special, is we have so many different guys that can hurt any team on any given night, so many talented players in every position,” said Wesmen guard Kato Jaro.

“Brandon’s a really talented team. We came out pretty sloppy in the first half … but we got it done. We prevailed with some big shots. Everybody made some big plays.”

The light at the end of the Brandon University Bobcats’ tunnel has finally arrived.

But they can’t take it lightly.

The BU women’s basketball team (3-9) remains in Canada West playoff position despite an eight-game losing streak. However, it takes on one of the three teams, just one win back in the Winnipeg Wesmen (2-8) at the Healthy Living Centre this weekend.

Tonight’s return to regular-season action tips off at 6 o’clock.

Defending champion Thunder figuring things out after 6-6 stretch follows 24-1 start

Cliff Brunt, The Associated Press 4 minute read Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Thunder are finding the roles of contender and champion to be very different.

Led by MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the young squad won the NBA title last season after years of showing promise.

Oklahoma City started this season with a 24-1 record, matching the best 25-game start in league history. The possibility of the Thunder bettering Golden State's 73-9 regular season record from 2015-16 became a popular topic among the league's fans and experts.

Then, cracks developed in the Thunder's seemingly impenetrable armor. The Spurs beat them three times in two weeks, including a 15-point win on Christmas Day.

Murray-Boyles had 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in an impactful performance for the Raptors as Toronto topped the Atlanta Hawks 118-100 on Monday. He also had three steals and two blocks, leading the Raptors with a plus-24 defensive rating.

"If you’re not tired, you’re not going hard enough, so I try to be as tired as possible," said Murray-Boyles with a laugh.

Murray-Boyles started at centre in place of Jakob Poeltl, who remains out with a sore lower back. Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic confirmed pre-game that Poeltl had been cleared for contact, however.

TORONTO - Nickeil Alexander-Walker is putting together the best season of his seven-year NBA career piece-by-piece.

Alexander-Walker is averaging career highs in every significant stat category this season including points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks for the Atlanta Hawks. The 27-year-old from Toronto said after Saturday's 134-117 loss to the Raptors that he has learned how to do all the behind-the-scenes stuff well.

"Little, small deeds, over time become big when you add them all up," said Alexander-Walker, who joined the Hawks in the off-season. "I think for me, I've gotten really good at putting the small pieces together.

"From my circle, the guys that helped me out this summer, trainers, to guys on the team being so welcoming to me, allowing me to step into this role, and cheering me on to the organization, to the team, the city."

TORONTO - Canadian Jamal Murray was back home for the first night of the next four weeks without his Denver Nuggets teammate, three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic, on Wednesday.

Murray and the Nuggets survived a Toronto Raptors second-half rally to hang on for a 106-103 win before 19,181 at Scotiabank Arena.

Jokic suffered a hyperextended left knee in the dying seconds of the Nuggets’ loss on the road against the Miami Heat on Monday. He’s expected to miss a minimum of four weeks.

“We did enough, but I could have been better,” the 28-year-old from Kitchener, Ont., said.

Ingram nailed an off-balance three-pointer at the buzzer, but a video review determined the ball was still on his fingertips as the game clock expired at Scotiabank Arena.

Jokic suffered a hyperextended left knee in the dying seconds of the Nuggets’ loss on the road against the Miami Heat on Monday.

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2025

TORONTO - Mo Bamba knows he fits in well in the Toronto Raptors’ locker room. Now he just has to find his place with them on the court.

The seven-foot centre signed with Toronto on Sunday and made his Raptors debut the next night, playing four minutes in a 107-106 win over the Orlando Magic.

Bamba was still finding his footing less than 24 hours into joining his sixth NBA team — his luggage was lost on his way to Toronto — but said getting acclimated was more about learning the Raptors' lingo than learning his teammates' names.

"Although a lot of teams do a lot of the same stuff, every team has their own terminology," said Bamba, sitting in front of his new locker at Scotiabank Arena. "So a down here might be an ice somewhere else, or, you know, a left call on a pick and roll is happening here might be a weak call somewhere else.
