WASAGAMING — Dustin Dyck finally had to go the distance, but came up with the big shot he needed to become the seventh back-to-back Tamarack golf tournament men’s champion.
The Brandonite downed Dave Unger 1 up at Clear Lake Golf Course on Saturday, his 29th birthday. Dyck rode a blistering start, going 5 under through six holes to lead 4 up and hung on.
“It was probably the craziest round of golf I’ve ever played from a peaks and valleys standpoint. I started off as hot as one could have hoped to start,” Dyck said.
“I drew on experience from last year’s win. Last year was a totally different experience. I was down three after nine and felt like I had to really dig deep to come back, and used similar skills this year.”
Dyck actually lost the next three holes with two bogeys and a double, but bounced back with a massive birdie on the 10th hole.
They traded a few holes as Dyck saw a match go past the 16th for the first time, and Unger stuffed it to six feet on the 17th to cut the lead to one.
But Dyck calmly made par after Unger’s 75-foot prayer of a putt for birdie came up short.
Meanwhile, Rod Lindenberg won the champion men’s event 1 up over Darren Graves.
Nolan Ritchie of Brandon claimed the junior title 4 and 3 over Ethan Bright of Killarney.
Kaitlin Troop won her record eighth women’s title 3 and 2 over Donna Blackbird.
Julie Card and Kylie Chubey won the women’s scramble final 1 up over Colleen Sinclair and Linnie Goodhand.
Murray Kawchuk took the senior men’s final 5 and 4 over Glen Parker.
