Europe wins the Ryder Cup and reasserts its dominance over the Americans

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 6 minute read Sunday, Sep. 28, 2025

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Staked to the largest lead in history, Europe fully expected to win the Ryder Cup on Sunday. The surprise was how much emotion poured out of the team on a final day that produced a furious American charge and, ultimately, another Irish hero.

What looked to be only a matter of time before the European celebration was on turned into nervous glances at the scorecard as the unruly crowd at Bethpage Black finally had a U.S. team to cheer for instead of against.

It went from looking impossible to improbable to just maybe.

And then Shane Lowry, who endured so much abuse from a hostile and vulgar New York crowd, had the last word. He holed a 6-foot birdie putt against Russell Henley to earn the half-point Europe needed to make sure it kept that 17-inch gold chalice.

Europe romps to another session win in Ryder Cup for a commanding 5-point lead

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 4 minute read Saturday, Sep. 27, 2025

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — President Donald Trump did not attend Day 2 at the Ryder Cup. That was about the only difference Saturday as Europe sent out its same foursomes teams, filled the scoreboard with blue points and delivered a crushing blow to the Americans.

Rory McIlroy told the crowd to shut up — he used a few other words — for shouting before he could hit a shot. More powerful was his partnership with Tommy Fleetwood that produced seven birdies in another romp over Harris English and Collin Morikawa.

Jon Rahm improved to 6-0 in foursomes, teaming with Tyrrell Hatton again in a 3-and-2 victory over Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, the first loss of the week for either American.

“You need your superstars to perform at their highest, and they certainly have showed that so far,” European captain Luke Donald said of Rahm and McIlroy.

Nesbitt first Canadian golfer to level up for 2026 season – but maybe not the last

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 4:41 PM CDT

Fall is the last gasp before winter shuts golf down for recreational players, but it's also when professional players have a chance to move up to the next level of the sport.

Drew Nesbitt was the lone Canadian to make the jump from the third-tier PGA Tour Americas to the second-tier Korn Ferry Tour at last week's Fortinet Cup Championship. Nesbitt tied for 43rd in the season finale to maintain a top-10 ranking to earn promotion.

Born in Toronto but playing out of Hockley Valley, Ont., Nesbitt finished the year with three top-five finishes, including a win at the Times Colonist Victoria Open on Sept. 21.

"The title may say Korn Ferry Tour rookie, but I certainly don't feel like one in the sense that I have experience at the higher levels," said Nesbitt on Tuesday. "I have played in PGA Tour events, so I can again draw on those experiences and how to operate my schedule.

Hunter Oakden shot an 8-under 64 to win the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association boys’ provincial golf title at Oak Island Resort on Friday.

The Vincent Massey sophomore also gave his Vikings the eight-shot cushion they needed to claim the team title over St. Paul’s High School.

Massey’s Daylan Duncalfe shot 75, with Kale Jones carding 78 for a total of 1-over 217 while St. Paul’s finished at 225.

It’s the first Vikings golf banner since Hunter’s father, Dean, led the program to three consecutive championships from 1990 to 1992.

Sarah Schmelzel’s big finish in Arkansas gives her share of the lead on LPGA

The Associated Press 3 minute read Friday, Sep. 19, 2025

ROGERS, Ark. (AP) — Sarah Schmelzel went from the middle of the pack to a tie for the lead in just five holes Friday, closing with four straight birdies and an eagle for an 8-under 63 to match Minami Katsu in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship.

Alison Lee also finished strong with a birdie and an eagle and was among those one shot behind, just what she needed to see in her third tournament back from giving birth to a son in late April.

The scoring was low at Pinnacle Country Club, and that's what concerned Schmelzel. She went out in 34 and was at 2 under and seemingly going nowhere. But she knew she was coming up on some scoring holes, with short clubs into the green and two par 5s.

“You should at least have looks on all those because you have pretty short clubs in,” Schmelzel said. “I told my caddie walking to the green on 14 I need to start making some birdies or else I'm going to get lapped out there today.”

Scottie Scheffler warms up for Ryder Cup by winning for 6th time this year

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 4 minute read Sunday, Sep. 14, 2025

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler wanted to stay sharp ahead of the Ryder Cup and the world's No. 1 player looked every bit of that Sunday, closing with a 5-under 67 to win the Procore Championship for his sixth PGA Tour victory of the year.

Scheffler made up a two-shot deficit on Ryder Cup teammate Ben Griffin, who was poised to force a playoff until he three-putted the par-5 18th from 60 feet for par to finish one behind.

Griffin, who started the final round with three straight birdies, shot a 70. He had a birdie putt from five feet on the 18th that caught the left edge and spun away. It was the second time this year he has finished runner-up to the world's No. 1 player.

Scheffler was one of the players who earlier in the year targeted the Procore Championship as a good spot for the Ryder Cup team to play so they could avoid the mistake of two years ago when all but two of them had a month off before the Rome matches.

MAINEVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Charley Hull took advantage of top-ranked Jeeno Thitikul's final-hole putting meltdown Sunday to win the Kroger Queen City Championship.

Thitikul — a stroke ahead after Hull bogeyed the par-4 17th — four-putted the par-5 18th from about 50 feet, missing a 5-footer and a 3-foot comebacker. Hull two-putted from about 30 feet, making a 2-footer for the victory.

“I wasn’t really watching her putt for birdie because I thought she was going to hole it,” Hull said. “Then, yeah, I guess it’s not over until the fat lady sings, but I was shaking over that last putt because I just didn’t expect it.”

Hull closed with a 4-under 68 to finish at 20-under 268 at TPC River’s Bend. The 29-year-old English player won her third LPGA Tour title and first since 2022. She also has four victories on the Ladies European Tour.

MAINEVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Charley Hull shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead over top-ranked Jeeno Thitikul after three rounds of the Kroger Queen City Championship.

Hull birdied four of her final eight holes to post 16-under 200 at TPC River's Bend, and credited her straightforward mental approach.

“I just hit a ball and find it and hit it again, you know what I mean? I think that’s the trouble with many golfers, overthinking,” Hull said. “It’s just a game. Hit a white ball at the pin. Make a birdie or make a par, make a bogey, whatever, just roll on to the next hole.”

Thitikul, seeking to become the first multiple winner on the LPGA Tour this season, shot 68. The Thai star won in May at Liberty National in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Ben Griffin takes three-shot lead in Napa ahead of Ryder Cup debut

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 4 minute read Friday, Sep. 12, 2025

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Ben Griffin went about his business Friday like he was at any other PGA Tour stop, even with so many Ryder Cup teammates around him. He played bogey-free for the second straight day with a 6-under 66 to build a three-shot lead in the Procore Championship.

Three shots behind him from the early starters at Silverado was Russell Henley, who makes his Ryder Cup debut in two weeks. Henley dropped a few shots on his back nine and shot 68. Amateur Jackson Koivun of San Jose, Calif., is tied with Henley after carding a second-round 68.

Next was J.J. Spaun, the U.S. Open champion who also will be at Bethpage Black. He did just enough right for a 68 and was five shots behind.

Silverado has 10 players on the American team, with captain Keegan Bradley checking in on all of them. The victory was getting so many U.S. players to compete and stay sharp, unlike two years ago when so many of them had gone a month without competition before the Ryder Cup.

Oakden, Vikings win city golf crown

Hunter Oakden wasn’t the happiest player at Wheat City Golf Course on Thursday, even though he was the best.

To be fair, his 1-under 70 to win the Zone 15 boys championship was a full six strokes higher than the round he shot to make the Vincent Massey Vikings’ squad as a sophomore.

The 15-year-old certainly struck the ball well enough to fire another 64, something he’s done twice at the Brandon track, but hitting 17 greens in regulation was still something to be proud of.

“It feels good because it’s at the home course, too,” Oakden said. “I’m just used to all the shots, and some putts didn’t drop, but I hit all the right shots.”

MAINEVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Chanettee Wannasaen broke out of a swing funk to shoot a 9-under 63 and take a two-stroke lead Thursday in the Kroger Queen City Championship.

Wannasaen holed out a 9-iron shot for eagle on the par-4 10th and had seven birdies in her morning round at soggy TPC River’s Bend.

“Actually, today play really good,” Wannasaen said. “After AIG (Women’s British Open), I have a little bit struggle with my swing, so like I cannot hit like a solid shot.”

The 21-year-old Thai player has two LPGA Tour victories, the 2023 Portland Classic and 2024 Dana Open.
