Oakden, Hamm head to provincial junior

Thomas Friesen 5 minute read Monday, Jul. 6, 2026

Brandon went 53 years without a Golf Manitoba junior boys’ provincial champion.

This week, a few standout players have a chance to make it three Wheat City winners in a row.

Team Manitoba golfers Hunter Oakden and Brayden Hamm begin the three-day tournament at Pine Ridge Golf Club today with high hopes and a plan for success.

“I’m trying to play conservative for the most part, especially in the first round, just try to make some putts,” Hamm said, adding he has learned a lot about strategy through provincial team practices.

Chris Gotterup wins John Deere Classic with a 62 and late help from Kohles

The Associated Press 4 minute read Sunday, Jul. 5, 2026

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Chris Gotterup made up a five-shot deficit Sunday by closing with a 9-under 62 to win the John Deere Classic for his fourth PGA Tour title in the last 12 months.

Gotterup avoided a playoff when Ben Kohles, trying to win for the first time in his 120th start, hit his approach to the 18th left and into the water and wound up with a double bogey.

Gotterup next week defends his title in the Scottish Open, where he began his remarkable run to reach the top 10 in the world. He held off Rory McIlroy a year ago in Scotland, and then won the Sony Open and the Phoenix Open this year.

This might have been as enjoyable as the others. His brother, Patrick, caddied for him at the TPC Deere Run and Gotterup was in tears on the practice range when he became the winner.

Glover, Hodges tied for John Deere Classic lead as 50-year-old Johnson lurks

The Associated Press 4 minute read Saturday, Jul. 4, 2026

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Lucas Glover chipped in for eagle early and made a birdie late, his only two sub-par holes Saturday for a 2-under 69 that was just enough for him to share the lead with Lee Hodges in the John Deere Classic that now has plenty of possibilities.

Hodges had four birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine of the TPC Deere Run for a 67 to join Glover at 16-under 197 going into Sunday's final round.

Nine players were within four shots of the lead, a group that ranges from 50-year-old Zach Johnson to NCAA champion Preston Stout of Oklahoma State.

Glover's three-year exemption on the PGA Tour from winning twice in 2023 expires this year, and he began the season still recovering from labrum surgery.

Lucas Glover builds two-shot lead in John Deere Classic

The Associated Press 3 minute read Friday, Jul. 3, 2026

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Lucas Glover kept another clean card by holing a 12-foot par putt on his final hole for a 6-under 65 to take a two-shot lead Friday in the John Deere Classic.

Glover started on No. 10 in the afternoon and did most of his damage of the back nine with five birdies, though equally important was going bogey-free through 36 holes.

He was at 14-under 128, two shots ahead of Lee Hodges (66) and another shot ahead of Zac Blair, who made a nifty par of his own on the closing hole at TPC Deere Run for a 68.

For a tournament with so much emphasis on youth, the focus shifted to some of the veterans. Glover is 46 and first joined the PGA Tour before the likes of Jackson Koivun, NCAA champion Preston Stout and 18-year-old Blades Brown were even born.

Clara Peake is back from her best college golf season yet.

She posted one top-10 finish after the next early, and claimed her first NCAA Division II tournament victory in the spring.

While she’s in a much smaller field this Sunday and Monday, it may be the Binscarth native’s toughest test of 2026.

Peake is teeing it up in the Golf Manitoba women’s amateur alongside two-time defending champion Addison Kartusch, who gets to compete at her home St. Charles Country Club for the second year in a row.

Zach Johnson skips Senior Open for John Deere and opens with 64 to trail by one shot

The Associated Press 4 minute read Thursday, Jul. 2, 2026

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Zach Johnson is skipping three majors for the John Deere Classic, which feels like a major for the Iowa native. He made the decision pay off Thursday with an eagle-birdie finish for a 7-under 64 that left him one shot out of the lead.

Lucas Glover and Zac Blair played in the morning and each posted a 63, a good start for both as the PGA Tour heads into the final two months. Both are well outside the top 100 in the FedEx Cup.

Johnson, a 50-year-old in his first year on the PGA Tour Champions and already with two victories, never considered anything but the John Deere Classic even with the U.S. Senior Open in Ohio this week at Scioto.

He used putter from off the green for a 45-foot eagle on the par-5 17th, and capped off his round with a shot into 12 feet for a closing birdie.

Golf Manitoba and Gilbert Plains Country Club were not able to stage the provincial women’s amateur and men’s mid-amateur championships this week due to heavy rainfall and flooding, leaving the course unplayable.

Golf Manitoba announced the decision late Tuesday morning, after suspending Wednesday’s first round earlier in the morning.

The three-round events were set to run through this Friday, with 20 players in the women’s event and 59 in the men’s field.

“I’ve never seen something like this in 20 years,” said Gilbert Plains golf professional and general manager Scott McCallum, who was unable to drive into the property as of Wednesday afternoon. “I’m looking for a boat to try and get there.

GILBERT PLAINS — The province’s top golfers are on one of the longest treks they will ever make for a provincial championship this week.

It’s worth the trip.

For the first time, Gilbert Plains Country Club is staging a Golf Manitoba major championship when the women’s amateur and men’s mid-amateur begin on Wednesday.

The course hosted the Golf Manitoba rural amateur from 1997 to 2000, then hosted the 2024 Manitoba Games golf event.

Scheffler makes clutch putt to force Monday playoff against Hovland in Travelers Championship

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 4 minute read Sunday, Jun. 28, 2026

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler made an eight-foot par putt on the 18th hole Sunday and pumped his fist with more emotion than he showed all day, just for the right to return Monday at the rain-delayed Travelers Championship to face a sudden-death playoff against Viktor Hovland.

The final round was stopped for 90 minutes as storms moved over the TPC River Highlands, and officials deemed there was not enough daylight for them to start the playoff.

The playoff was to start at 9 a.m. Monday, the first time a PGA Tour went an extra day since The Players Championship last year.

“It’s more fun when you’re making the ones to win,” Scheffler said. “But to keep yourself in it is also nice. Like I said, I live another day until tomorrow, and will be coming out in the morning and see what I can do.”

Haeran Ryu wins Women’s PGA Championship, Henderson finishes tied for third

Dave Campbell, The Associated Press 4 minute read Sunday, Jun. 28, 2026

CHASKA, Minn. (AP) — Haeran Ryu recovered from a rough start to secure her first career major title, winning the Women's PGA Championship by two strokes over Ina Yoon on a windy Sunday at Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Ryu shot a 2-under 70 to finish at 13-under 275 and become the sixth South Korean to win the event over the last 12 editions, flashing a big smile after sinking her last putt as friends ran out to douse her in celebration.

The 2023 LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year was also the first major champion in at least the last 60 years to rally from a 10-plus-shot deficit after the first round. Ryu opened Thursday with a 73 in a tie for 70th place, as Yoon shot a tournament-record 63.

Playing her first event in six weeks, Ryu shook off whatever rust she showed and heeded some keen advice from her coach about moving forward.

CHASKA, Minn. (AP) — Haeran Ryu shot a 4-under 68 on Saturday to take a one-shot lead over Canadian Brooke Henderson after three rounds of the Women’s PGA Championship.

Ina Yoon, who entered the day with a five-shot lead, struggled early but settled down to finish with a 3-over 75 and is two shots off the pace.

Dewi Weber, the 210th ranked player in the World Golf Rankings seeking her first career LPGA win, birdied three of the final four holes and is three shots back after a 4-under 68. A Lim Kim joins her there.

Nelly Korda, chasing a historic third straight major championship win, shot a 1-under 71 on a sun-drenched, but windy day at Hazeltine National Golf Club outside Minneapolis. She and Alison Lee are four shots off the lead, which history indicates is important.

Hovland flips the script on Scheffler and takes the lead at Travelers Championship

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 4 minute read Saturday, Jun. 27, 2026

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Viktor Hovland feels he is headed in the right direction, and Saturday at the Travelers Championship was a big test. He played alongside Scottie Scheffler on a course that features plenty of water and shots that can cause some stress.

A two-shot swing on the 18th hole — Hovland made a 6-foot birdie, Scheffler three-putted from 25 feet on the fringe for bogey — gave the Norwegian star a 6-under 64 and a one-shot lead over the world's No. 1 player.

“Just had a great time,” Hovland said. “It’s been a while since I’ve been in this position. To go head-to-head against the best player in the world and pull off some great shots, it was just a lot of fun.”

The pleasant surprise was the support he had in the crowd.
