Moore delivers surprise, tops Spieth, Schenk at Innisbrook

The Associated Press 4 minute read Sunday, Mar. 19, 2023

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Taylor Moore was never really the star attraction Sunday at the Valspar Championship until he had finished hitting all the right shots and posed with the trophy for his first PGA Tour title that sends him to the Masters.

Adam Schenk and Jordan Spieth provided enough compelling theater for so much of the day, locked in a battle on the back nine of the Copperhead course at Innisbrook.

When it was over, all they shared was misfortune.

Moore surged into the mix with a 9-iron to 5 feet for birdie on the 15th hole and a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, followed by two tough pars for a 4-under 67.

Langer leads at Newport in bid to break Champ victory record

The Associated Press 2 minute read Saturday, Mar. 18, 2023

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Bernhard Langer remained in position Saturday in the Hoag Classic to break a tie with Hale Irwin for the PGA Tour Champions victory record.

Langer played the final five holes in 5-under — going birdie-eagle-par-birdie-birdie — for a 5-under 66 and one-stroke lead with a round left. The 65-year-old German star tied Irwin at 45 victories a month ago in the Chubb Classic in Florida.

“Just really played well, gave myself lots of opportunities,” Langer said. “And like the eagle, as good as three shots as I can possibly pull off."

Langer opened with a 64 on Friday for a share of the first-round lead with Miguel Angel Jimenez and Chris DiMarco. Jimenez shot a 67 on Saturday to fall a stroke back with Doug Barron (66) at Newport Beach Country Club.

Schenk’s late birdie gives him lead over Spieth, Fleetwood

The Associated Press 4 minute read Saturday, Mar. 18, 2023

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Adam Schenk looked as though he and everyone else would get passed by Jordan Spieth on Saturday at the Valspar Championship. When a wild and windy round finished, Schenk was still the player everyone was chasing.

Schenk hit his approach to the 18th hole to 5 feet and made the birdie putt for a 1-under 70, giving him a one-shot lead over Spieth and Tommy Fleetwood as he goes after his first victory on the PGA Tour.

“We didn't have a ton go our way until the very end,” Schenk said.

Neither did Fleetwood, who opened with a birdie and followed with 12 straight pars. He wound up with a bogey-free 69 and realized not losing ground was one of the best things he had going on the Copperhead course at Innisbrook.

PGA's Schenk gets results in 10th straight week

The Associated Press 4 minute read Friday, Mar. 17, 2023

PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Adam Schenk is playing for the 10th consecutive week on the PGA Tour and finally seeing some good results, making enough putts Friday for a 2-under 69 that gave him a one-shot lead going into the weekend at the Valspar Championship.

Schenk had four birdies, all but one of them from inside 10 feet, and finished with a bogey from the bunker short of the 18th on the Copperhead course at Innisbrook.

That didn't bother him too much because of the 20-foot putt he made for par on the par-3 eighth, the 10-footer for par he made on the 10th and the long up-and-down for par on the par-5 11th.

“I feel like a lot of times you ... maybe shoot 2 under and you're like, ‘It could have been 6 or 7.’ But it really couldn't have been a ton better with the amount of putts I made,” he said.

Canadians ready to make play on Latinoamerica Tour

John Chidley-Hill, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Thursday, Mar. 16, 2023

Myles Creighton is happy to be back playing golf on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, but he hopes it's his last stop on his way up to a higher-tier tour.

Creighton, from Digby, N.S., is the top ranked Canadian golfer at this week's Termas de Rio Hondo Invitational in Argentina, the first Latinoamerica event of 2023 and fourth of its season. The 27-year-old has been on the third-tier South American circuit for three seasons: 2020, 2022 and 2023.

"Hopefully not long, hopefully three more weeks. If you win three times you can get onto the Korn Ferry Tour," said Creighton, who has also played on the PGA Tour China and PGA Tour Canada, the other feeder circuits for the PGA Tour. "I'm pretty well versed on playing these tours, but I'd like to know less about them, to be honest.

"They are great and they're so good for us players to get competitive reps and play against good competition and learn how to travel. But ultimately, you want to get to the next level, which would be the Korn Ferry Tour and then onto the PGA Tour."

PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic (AP) — Brice Garnett returned to the course of his lone PGA Tour victory and played a clean round in a steady wind for a 6-under 66 and a share of the lead Thursday with Ben Martin in the Corales Puntacana Championship.

Garnett won in 2018 and has returned to the tournament every year. He prefers a steady wind and feels comfortable on the greens, and it showed.

Martin matched Garnett with a bogey-free round, joining him in the lead with a birdie on the par-3 eighth and finishing with a tee shot off the rocks on the par-3 ninth that took a favorable bounce onto the green.

They had a one-shot lead over Matt Wallace of England.

Scheffler turns in masterpiece at Sawgrass to win Players

Doug Ferguson, The Associated Press 5 minute read Sunday, Mar. 12, 2023

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler was fearless on a TPC Sawgrass course that can jangle the nerves on every hole. The wind was getting stronger, the targets looked smaller, and all he wanted was to make sure his lead got larger in The Players Championship.

“You can't limp in on this golf course,” he said. “You've got to hit the shots.”

He did every bit of that Sunday in a masterful performance that only enhanced his reputation as a player who's at his best when playing the best in the world.

Scheffler ran off five straight birdies in the middle of his round, built a six-shot lead and left all the drama to everyone else on his way to a 3-under 69 to win the richest prize on the PGA Tour by five shots.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler won early, holing a chip from deep rough for eagle on the par-5 second hole at The Players Championship to win a bet against his caddie on the number of times the Masters champion chips in during the season.

The bigger payoff was the way Scheffler navigated 26 holes on Saturday — eight in the morning to finish the rain-delayed second round, 18 in the afternoon when the TPC Sawgrass was as soft and vulnerable as it gets — for a 7-under 65 to build a two-shot lead over Min Woo Lee of Australia.

Still to come: A chance for Scheffler to capture another big prize against a strong field, return to No. 1 in the world and cash a $4.5 million winner's check.

“I would much rather win the tournament than get back to No. 1 in the world,” Scheffler said. “So that will be my focus going into tomorrow, just going out and having a solid round of golf.”

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Chad Ramey became the only player to reach double digits under par at The Players Championship. The TPC Sawgrass, as usual, had the final say.

Ramey put two tee shots in the water on the island-green 17th hole Friday for a quintuple-bogey that cost him a three-shot lead on a day of wild swings and, eventually, wild weather.

The second round was suspended with half the field unable to finish the round because of a storm system expected to dump a half-inch of rain on the Players Stadium Course.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout of South Africa and Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., shared the lead at 8-under par, both doing what it takes to stay in front on this course. They didn't make a bogey Friday — Bezuidenhout through 14 holes, Svensson through 11 holes — and they have only one for the week.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Chad Ramey managed to avoid stress and bogeys Thursday in The Players Championship for an 8-under 64, making him an unlikely leader on a TPC Sawgrass course that rarely fails to deliver a surprise.

Ramey had a one-shot lead over two-time major champion Collin Morikawa in mild conditions, while Canada's Taylor Pendrith was in a three-way tie sitting three shots back of the lead. Roughly half the field was at par or better.

That doesn't mean it was devoid of drama.

Hayden Buckley made an ace on the famed island green at the 17th, a hole he had only seen on TV until he arrived this week for his Players Championship debut.

The driver has been the best club in Taylor Pendrith's bag throughout his golf career, but he's struggled with it this season, an issue he hopes to rectify at this week's Players Championship.

Pendrith is one of six Canadians competing at TPC Sawgrass for a share of the US$25 million purse, the largest on the PGA Tour calendar. On an individual level, Pendrith hopes that the Stadium Course, which has an average drive of over 285 yards, will help him dial in his long game.

"I feel like my game overall is pretty good, but the strongest part of my game has been the weakest in the past couple of months," said the native of Richmond Hill, Ont. "So get the driver going and just put myself in contention as much as possible and try and chase a win.

"That'd be amazing."

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — David Toms got up-and-down for his third bogey of the week on the par-4 18th hole at Tucson National on Sunday to beat Robert Karlsson by one stroke in the Cologuard Classic on the PGA Tour Champions.

The 56-year-old Toms was surprised to learn that his tee shot on 18 had rolled into the water flanking the right side of the fairway. After a penalty drop, he hit his third shot right of the green, then left his chip about six feet short. He pumped his fist as the bogey putt curled in to secure his third victory on the over-50 tour.

“I hit it in the water three days in a row there, so we’re not the best friends,” Toms said of the 18th. “You know, to make a nice putt there in the end that I had to make, that was the difference. My putter was good all week. It had to be good again today.”

Toms closed with a 4-under 68 for a three-day total of 15-under 202 and won US$330,000.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Kurt Kitayama only had to look around at the players next to him in the practice area and right below him on the leaderboard at Bay Hill to know what he was up against Sunday in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

“You can't ignore it. You got to know where you're at and you know who is there and just embrace the whole situation, I guess,” Kitayama said after a final two hours of pure theater for his first PGA Tour win.

He got the result he desperately wanted in a fashion he never imagined.

First came the wild tee shot that sailed out-of-bounds on the ninth hole that led to triple bogey and let an All-Star cast — Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, Tyrrell Hatton and Harris English — back into the tournament.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Kurt Kitayama had to leave home to find his way in golf by playing circuits in Europe, Australia and Asia, all for a chance to get to the highest level. Along with three worldwide titles, he learned how to battle.

That might come in handy Sunday at Bay Hill.

Without a birdie on the front nine and no longer in the lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Kitayama fought back with a 25-foot birdie to start the back nine and two birdies over the final three holes Saturday for an even-par 72.

A 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole gave him a one-shot lead over defending champion Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland of Norway.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Chris Kirk waited nearly eight years to win a PGA Tour event again. Waiting one more hole on Sunday was no problem.

Kirk stuck his approach to the par-5 18th to tap-in range, and his birdie on the first hole of a playoff lifted him past Eric Cole for the victory at the Honda Classic on Sunday.

Cole had a chance, playing his third shot from the sand to just outside of 10 feet for a birdie that would have extended the playoff. But it lipped out, and Kirk nudged his ball in for his fifth career win — his first since prevailing at Colonial in 2015.

“I was obviously very, very nervous today having not won in so long," Kirk said. “Coming down the stretch, I felt good."

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Chris Kirk’s last win on the PGA Tour was nearly eight years ago. He’s put himself in a position to change that at the Honda Classic.

Kirk battled his way to a 4-under round of 66 on Saturday, putting him at 13-under 197 for the week and giving him a two-shot lead over Eric Cole (66) through three rounds at PGA National.

His last win on tour was at Colonial in 2015 — 180 tournaments ago. He’s a four-time winner on tour, played in the Presidents Cup in 2015, and has been waiting to hoist a trophy again since.

Kirk made a wild birdie on the last, after his second shot on the par-5 18th wound up next to the grandstand and underneath someone’s bag that was left against structure. He got a drop, chipped on from there and made the putt to restore a two-shot lead.

PATTAYA, Thailand (AP) — Thai rookie Natthakritta Vongtaveelap shot a bogey-free 64 to grab a four-stroke lead over fellow countrywoman Atthaya Thitikul after round three of the US$1.7 million LPGA Thailand on Saturday.

The 20-year-old Vongtaveelap began with an eagle and went on to notch six birdies, including three in a row from the 16th, to finish on 20-under-par-196 in front of thousands of jubilant home fans at the Siam Country Club.

Vongtaveelap will try to become the first player to win on her LPGA Tour debut since Japanese Hinako Shibuno at the 2019 Women’s British Open.

“This is a bit beyond my expectations but it’s not impossible," Vongtaveelap said. “A bigger crowd is expected to turn up tomorrow and I will try to take that as an inspiration to do my best.”
