Braxton Kuntz shot a sparkling 5-under 67 to open his Golf Manitoba junior boys championship defence at St. Charles Country Club on Wednesday.
The Winnipegger, who played his first season of NCAA Division I golf this year, poured in four of his five birdies on a five-hole stretch to open the back nine. Dauphin’s Thomas Scott, who plays out of St. Charles, is tied for third with a 73.
Dauphin’s Eric Prokopowich is tied for eighth at 76 while Wheat City’s Scotty Miner and Dauphin’s Jackson Delaurier are T14 at 78.
In the girls event, defending champ Clara Peake of Binscarth fired 79 and sits three shots back of leader Addison Kartusch, who’s at her home course.
Killarney’s Cala Korman sits second with a 77 and Swan River’s Crystal Zamzow is fifth at 81.
Brandon’s Hunter Oakden defends his 12-and-under boys title starting today and everyone finishes on Friday.
Meanwhile, in Prince Albert, Sask., Brandon’s Drew Jones shot a 4-over 75 to follow up an opening 80 in the Saskatchewan men’s amateur at Cooke Municipal Golf Course.
On Tuesday, Winnipeg’s Mason Chubey shot a 10-over 82 to capture the 14U division title in the Westman Junior Golf Tour’s stop at Poplar Ridge Golf Course.
Brandon’s Rhett Ryden and Virden’s Eric Berger tied for second at 94.
Brock Dorrance of Wawota, Sask., claimed the 12U crown with a 26-over 98, one shot ahead of Brandon’s Brayden Hamm.
In 18U matches, Miniota’s Foster Couvier beat Brandon’s Willem Yuel 6 up; Wawota’s Zackary Mudrewich downed Virden’s Xander Penner 5 up, Marius’s Drake Starr won 5 up over Chase Robertson of Carlyle, Sask.; Zayn Leslie of Moosomin, Sask., beat Russell’s Colby Lowe 2 up and Rossburn’s Dry Mushumanski picked up a default win over Carson Craig.
