Jeri Lafleche strung together the two best rounds of the Golf Manitoba women’s amateur to win by six strokes at Granite Hills Golf Course on Friday.

The 15-year-old Winnipegger, who’s a member at Clear Lake Golf Course, opened with a 9-over 81 at the Lac du Bonnet track on Wednesday, then posted a sparkling 75 to move into a tie for the lead before a 76 in the final round for a total of 16-over 232 while multi-time champ Rhonda Orr was second at 22 over.

Lafleche played her last 42 holes without a double-bogey, rolling in seven birdies during that stretch. Her playing partners struggled and fell back but she didn’t know how close Orr was behind her.

“I only found out on the 18th green,” Lafleche told Golf Manitoba. “My dad (and caddie Julien) kind of hid it from me.

“It’s good, I played well so I feel I deserved it and I shot my two best rounds, so I don’t know, it was a good two days.”

In the men’s mid-amateur, Stonewall’s Ryan Sholdice out-duelled Brandon’s Drew Jones by two strokes on the week, finishing 8 over.

Lafleche said her driver was good and she was able to rip it instead of settling for three-woods and irons off tees to stay in play on the tight, bush-lined holes.

Her most important club was also working.

“My putter was definitely helpful,” Lafleche said. “I was able to stick my long putts close … and able to sink a couple of six-footers which kept me pretty still with my lead.”

Killarney’s Cala Korman tied for sixth at 28 over while Binscarth’s Clara Peake was ninth at 32 over. Brandon’s Payton Oakden carded her second straight 89 to finish 12th at 56 over.

Sholdice carded the lone sub-par round of the week on Day 2, a 2-under 70 to enter Day 3 with a one-shot lead on Jones. It was a two-horse race from there, one that was tied after 10 holes before Jones went bogey, bogey, double, double and quickly fell behind by four.

Both birdied the par-4 15th, then Sholdice doubled the next hole but closed it out with two pars.

“It was a grind all day,” Sholdice said. “Both me and Drew kind of struggled off the tee all day, went right to 18 pretty much. The birdie I made on 13, that was where I kind of felt comfortable, I hit a good second shot to a foot, it lipped out and unfortunate for him, he doubled. So I had a three-shot lead and was better after that.”

Jones, who plays out of Shilo Country Club, Sholdice and Joe Scharf of Whitewater Golf Club in Thunder Bay, Ont., earned spots on Team Manitoba for the Canadian men’s mid-amateur at The Thornhill Club in Ontario on Aug. 23-26.

Shilo’s Brad Pardy posted a 76 on Day 3 to slid up to eighth place while Nolan Tutkaluk shot 78 to finish tied for 13th.
