MONTERREY – Rodrigo Aguirre scored once in each half, Nahuel Guzmán stopped two of three shots and the Monterrey-based Tigres UANL defeated the visiting Forge FC of Hamilton 4-1 in the second leg of the first-round CONCACAF Champions Cup series.

Brian White scored Forge’s goal on a penalty kick in the 80th minute at Estadio Universitario.

The teams played to a scoreless draw in the series opener on Feb. 3 in Hamilton.

Aguirre gave the aggressive hosts a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, then put them ahead 2-0 in the 71st minute.

After White got the Canadian Premier League side back to within a goal, Angel Correa responded a minute later to restore the host’s two-goal lead. Joaquim Henrique added a fourth Tigres goal in the 86th minute.

The Tigres, who compete in Liga MX — the top division of Mexican soccer — outshot the Canadian squad 16-7 (6-3 on target), had possession for 77 per cent of the match and had more corners (8-4).

The Tigres had 17 fouls and two yellow cards, while the Forge had six fouls and one yellow card.

The Tigres advance to the round of 16 and will play the winner of the FC Cincinnati-O & M Futbol Club series.
