CALGARY – The Calgary Flames have traded veteran winger Blake Coleman and defenceman Olli Maatta to the Minnesota Wild for defenceman Jacob Middleton and three draft picks.

The Flames will retain 50 per cent of the final year of Coleman’s contract and get a second-round pick in 2029, a third-round pick in 2027 and a fourth-round pick in 2028 in the deal.

Middleton of Wainwright, Alta., had two goals, 14 assists and 76 penalty minutes in 75 games with Minnesota last season. He had an assist in 11 playoff games too.

The 30-year-old left-handed shot has appeared in 381 career NHL games with Minnesota and San Jose for 24 goals, 70 assists and 360 penalty minutes.

Middleton was a seventh-round pick (210th overall) by Los Angeles in 2014.

The six-foot-three, 2018-pound defenceman played for Canada’s team that won the 2023 world championship.

Coleman, 34, had 99 goals and 100 assists in 392 games over five seasons in Calgary. He also had two goals and three assists in a dozen playoff games for the Flames in 2022.

Maatta, 31, had two goals and 12 assists in 21 games after he was acquired from the Utah Mammoth in a trade that sent defenceman Mackenzie Weegar to Salt Lake.
