BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Chicago Blackhawks coach Jeff Blashill ruled out top defenceman Bowen Byram from playing in Buffalo on Saturday night because of a family matter.

Byram’s absence came as he prepared to face his former team for the first time since the Sabres traded him to Chicago in a multiplayer deal in June.

The 25-year-old Byram of Cranbrook, B.C., subsequently signed a six-year, US$75 million contract with the Blackhawks in becoming the team’s top-paid defenceman.

The offensive-minded player had 21 goals and 89 points in 182 games with Buffalo.

He didn’t register a point in Chicago’s two straight losses to open the season.

After playing Buffalo, the Blackhawks open their home schedule hosting St. Louis on Tuesday.
