WINNIPEG - Zach Collaros was succinct in his assessment of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' offence after Friday's 17-16 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“I didn’t like anything,” the Blue Bombers quarterback said. “We didn’t do anything well.”

Collaros completed 15 of 24 pass attempts for 182 yards with one touchdown toss and one interception.

As has often been the case this season, Winnipeg's defence and special teams made up for a lack of offensive output.

OTTAWA - The Montreal Alouettes tied the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for first in the East Division and extended their win streak to five games with a 39-28 victory over the Ottawa Redblacks on Saturday.

With just one game to go in the regular season, the Alouettes have a chance at earning a bye through the first round of the playoffs if they can finish top of their division.

For the Redblacks (4-13), it’s the second straight loss to the Alouettes (10-7) after falling 30-10 in Montreal on Monday.

The Alouettes fielded quarterback Davis Alexander, who extended his CFL record career-opening run to 11 straight wins. In this one, Alexander completed 21 of his 31 passes for 328 yards.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Jack Hughes scored twice, Jake Allen stopped 27 of the 30 shots he faced and the New Jersey Devils won their fourth game in a row by beating the Edmonton Oilers 5-3 on Saturday.

It's the Devils' first four-game winning streak since a stretch of five victories in a row from Jan. 7-16, 2023. That was two coaching changes ago when Lindy Ruff was behind the bench.

Hughes knifed his way through three Edmonton skaters before beating Calvin Pickard far side for his first goal eight minutes into the second period. He made another nasty move to deke and shoot the puck past Pickard for his second with seven and a half minutes left.

Jesper Bratt scored on the power play off a faceoff and did so with Sweden Olympic coach Sam Hallam in attendance scouting ahead of the New Year's Eve roster deadline for Milan. Bratt is a good bet to make it as a four-time 20-goal scorer who set a career high with 88 points last season.

OTTAWA - Anders Lee scored the game-winning goal with 1:03 remaining to complete the New York Islanders' 5-4 comeback win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon.

Lee stripped Jordan Spence of the puck and crossed over to the net and beat Linus Ullmark, who made 18 saves, five-hole for the winner.

Kyle Palmieri evened the score for the Islanders at 4-4 at the six-minute mark of the third, taking a drop pass from Mathew Barzal before snapping a shot past Ullmark.

With the Senators short-handed, Shane Pinto pounced on a loose puck and broke free before being hauled down by Matthew Schaefer, earning a penalty shot. He couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity at the 2:23 mark of the third.

Canada has suffered a blow on the eve of its opening match at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, losing co-captain Emma Reda to injury.

The 16-year-old midfielder from Woodbridge, Ont., the daughter of former Canadian international Marco Reda, was hurt in training.

"She's just gone in for a slide tackle — that's Emma Reda, classic — she was trying to win the ball back, as she always does," said Canada coach Jen Herst. "It's just been an unfortunate one where her arm's got caught in the ground and she fractured the ulna."

The Canadians, who have called in Ottawa midfielder Felicia Hanisch as a replacement, were already missing the injured Reese Kay and Joelle Bader. Kaylee Hunter was called up by the Canadian senior side after AFC Toronto refused to release her for the U-17 championship.

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) — Nottingham Forest fired manager Ange Postecoglou minutes after a 3-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday.

Postecoglou didn’t win any of his eight matches in charge after replacing Nuno Espirito Santo on Sept. 9.

It was his first job since being fired by Tottenham at the end of last season, despite leading Spurs to the Europa League title to break its 17-year trophy drought.

Forest has now lost six and drawn the other two of its eight games under Postecoglou. That includes four losses from five in the league, scoring just one goal in the process, to leave Forest hovering just above the bottom three.

VANCOUVER - Even though he made one of the biggest plays of the game, B.C. Lions cornerback Robert Carter Jr. still had a regret.

Carter picked off a Cody Fajardo pass early in the third quarter and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown as the Lions overcame a deficit by rattling off 25 consecutive points in a 37-24 win that eliminated the Edmonton Elks from the CFL playoffs Friday night.

Carter was so excited after giving the Lions a 17-10 lead he threw the ball into the stands.

“I didn’t need to throw the ball into the stands,” he said after. “I actually regret that now.”

NHL roundup: Ovechkin scores, Capitals beat Wild 5-1 for fourth straight win

The Associated Press 4 minute read Friday, Oct. 17, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin scored for the first time this season, Dylan Strome added a pair of goals and the Washington Capitals beat the Minnesota Wild 5-1 on Friday night for their fourth straight victory.

Ovechkin’s third-period shot pinged off the left post and in, and the crowd roared its approval when the counter above one corner of the ice was flipped over to 898, his new career total. The NHL’s career leader in goals also had an assist as part of a dominant showing at home for Washington.

Logan Thompson allowed only ex-Capital Marcus Johansson’s tally in the second. That tied it at 1, but Aliaksei Protas answered 31 seconds later.

Minnesota entered the game with the league’s top power play, having scored on 10 of 21 opportunities. But the Capitals only took two penalties and were able to kill them off. Washington finished with a 45-14 edge in shots.
