World’s tallest teen, Olivier Rioux of Canada, delivers emphatic dunk for first college field goal

Mark Long, The Associated Press 3 minute read Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Olivier Rioux lumbered through the lane, caught a bounce pass from teammate CJ Ingram and dunked, sending Florida’s bench and the home crowd into a frenzy.

Rioux barely left his feet to make it happen.

The 7-foot-9 centre from Terrebonne, Que., and the world’s tallest teenager recorded his first collegiate field goal in the 23rd-ranked Gators’ 102-61 victory against Saint Francis on Wednesday night.

“Pretty special, man,” Gators coach Todd Golden said. “The transition, his vertical. Woo. He was up there, man.”

HALIFAX - When Toronto Sceptres captain Blayre Turnbull grew up playing hockey in Stellarton, N.S., she didn’t look up to any professional women's players — because they didn’t exist.

She idolized the elite women's national team players suiting up for Canada at the world championships and Olympics, and male NHL players.

But when she was young, no females made money from playing the game she loved.

“It’s something you could really never dream of,” the 32-year-old Turnbull said Wednesday night after the Sceptres lost 2-1 in a shootout to the Montreal Victoire in the Professional Women's Hockey League's first-ever Halifax game.

Faulk scored his eighth goal of the season on a feed from Robert Thomas with 6:43 remaining in the second period to give St. Louis the lead.

Reports: A Chicago-based investment group is nearing a deal to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins

The Associated Press 3 minute read Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025

A family-owned, Chicago-based investment company is closing in on a deal to purchase the Pittsburgh Penguins from Fenway Sports Group.

Multiple outlets, including Victory Sports and ESPN, citing anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that the Hoffmann Family of Companies is nearing the final stages of an agreement to purchase one of the league's marquee franchises. Any purchase would need to be approved by the NHL's Board of Governors, though that is often merely a formality.

The financial details have not been released, though the Penguins were valued at around $1.7 billion recently by Forbes.

The sale, if completed, would end FSG's brief run as stewards of the five-time Stanley Cup-winning franchise. FSG, which owns Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox and Liverpool of the Premier League, agreed to purchase the Penguins from Ron Burkle and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux in late 2021

LONDON - American Adam Sevada, in his tournament debut, defeated Canadian Matt (Ginja Ninja) Campbell in first-round play Wednesday at the five-million-pound ($9.22-million) Paddy Power World Darts Championship.

Sevada won 3-1, with Campbell tying the match at one set apiece — scoring 96 with a triple-20 and double-18 to take the set three legs to two — before the American pulled away.

"It feels amazing," said Sevada, who qualified for the tournament in August by winning his fifth CDC ProTour title of 2025.

Hamilton's Campbell, ranked 59th on the Professional Darts Corporation's Order of Merit, had a chance to to extend the match when Sevada failed to end it by missing double-six twice. Campbell needed to score 144 with three darts to win the leg but missed, allowing the American to end it with his fourth attempt at double-six.

Ex-grocery boss Jones says customer is boss as he eyes B.C. Conservative leadership

Wolfgang Depner, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025

VICTORIA - Former grocery executive Darrell Jones says he plans to apply lessons learned from B.C. billionaire Jimmy Pattison to the political world as he considers running for the leadership of the provincial Conservatives.

He says Pattison taught him that the customer is the boss, and if Jones were to be become the premier of B.C., British Columbians would be his boss.

Jones, who was president of Pattison Food Group until his retirement in February, says in an interview that he'll decide in four to eight weeks whether to run for the leadership of the B.C. Conservatives after announcing on Monday that he's "seriously considering" a run.

He cites affordability, health care and public safety as key issues, and says he had never held membership in a political party until about two weeks ago, when he joined the B.C. Conservatives after John Rustad's resignation as party leader.

Dandjinou headlines Canada’s short track speedskating team for Milan Cortina Olympics

Daniel Rainbird, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025

MONTREAL - William Dandjinou didn’t flinch when short track coach Marc Gagnon set high expectations to open the season.

Gagnon said Canada is aiming for a record haul of seven Olympic medals at this winter’s Milan Cortina Games – and Dandjinou believes that’s more than within his team’s grasp.

"It's not like a track race, it's always hard to set clear goals,” said Dandjinou of the oft-unpredictable sport. “But at worlds last season we won 10 medals, so seven for me, it's really doable. It's not impossible.

“It's going to be difficult, for sure. At the Olympics, everyone is getting better. We don't expect it to be easy, but we're here for that."

The two were the lone Canadians among the 45 players invited to the Dec. 10-13 combine in Mesa, Ariz.

Brunet, a sophomore at Southern Methodist University, is a creative midfielder who excelled at Ahuntsic College in his native Montreal and the University of Central Arkansas before heading to Dallas to join the Mustangs.

He grew up attending CF Montreal games and was part of the MLS team's academy from the under-11 level until he was released at 14 or 15

Drew Doughty had the same digit stitched on his back since junior.

The Los Angeles Kings defenceman got No. 8 to match his birthday when he joined the Ontario Hockey League's Guelph Storm and kept it after making the NHL. Doughty, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist, wore the same number 19 combined seasons — until he didn't partway through his 20th.

Cale Makar was an early inclusion for Canada's roster at last February's 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. The Colorado Avalanche defenceman also wears No. 8.

Doughty, who turned 38 on Dec. 8, also eventually made it to the team. Locker-room seniority meant he should have gotten first pick, but there was a problem.
