Shane Jones, The Canadian Press 2 minute read 10:39 PM CDT

EDMONTON - Sergei Bobrovsky made 21 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season as the Florida Panthers continued to plague Edmonton, emerging with a 4-0 victory over the Oilers on Thursday in a rematch of the last two Stanley Cup finals.

Cole Reinhardt, A.J. Greer, Anton Lundell and Carter Verhaeghe scored for the injury-riddled Panthers (34-31-3), who snapped a two-game losing skid.

Sam Bennett, Evan Rodrigues and Michael Benning all had two assist games. The Panthers are almost certain to miss the playoffs and a chance to defend their back-to-back titles.

Connor Ingram made 19 stops in the loss for Edmonton (34-27-9).

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin scored his 922nd goal and Cole Hutson scored his first to lead the Washington Capitals past the Ottawa Senators 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Ovechkin is a goal shy of 1,000 — if his 77 postseason tallies are included.

The Capitals are still six points out of a playoff spot with time running out, but this was an encouraging night for the franchise. Hutson made his NHL debut less than a week after the end of his season at Boston University, and the 19-year-old defenseman showed off his smooth skating and stickhandling throughout the night, finally scoring into an empty net with 25.7 seconds remaining.

It was the 40-year-old Ovechkin who opened the scoring in the second period when Rasmus Sandin's pass bounced off his right skate past goalie Linus Ullmark. That momentarily gave Ovechkin sole possession of the team lead in goals this season with 25, but then Tom Wilson beat Ullmark later in the period for his 25th.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Grace Zumwinkle and Kelly Pannek scored 11 seconds apart during a four-goal first period and the Minnesota Frost routed the Ottawa Charge 5-0 on Wednesday night.

Minnesota (10-3-3-4) has won four straight games — the last three by scoring at least four goals. The Frost sit tied atop the league standing with the Boston Fleet at 39 points apiece.

Taylor Heise opened the scoring 27 seconds into the game — the second fastest goal in the PWHL this season — when she angled a shot from the corner that deflected off the stick and skate of goaltender Gwyneth Philips. Heise has goals in four straight games — the longest goal streak of the PWHL season.

Zumwinkle scored her ninth goal of the season and Pannek added her first goal of the game for a 3-0 lead to chase Philips. Pannek added her 11th goal of the season — to tie the league lead — late in the second period to cap the scoring.

For 10, it’s 900: Inter Miami star Lionel Messi scores milestone 900th goal, joining Ronaldo in club

Tim Reynolds, The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 7:28 PM CDT

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi has reached another milestone, getting his 900th career goal in the opening minutes of Inter Miami's CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 match against Nashville on Wednesday night.

The back-to-back Major League Soccer MVP, eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and World Cup champion got it as would be expected — with his left foot, like the majority of his career goals for club and country. He took a pass in the middle of the box in the seventh minute, controlled the ball, spun and lined a low shot past two defenders and into the far corner of the net.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the only other men's player with more than 900 goals — at least, by official counts. It took Ronaldo about 100 more matches to get to the milestone than Messi needed; Ronaldo was 39 when he got to 900 goals in September 2024, while Messi doesn't turn 39 until June.

There are some who have suggested Brazilian legend Pelé topped 1,000 goals for his career, though his “official” total is closer to 800. Different sources, counting different sets of games, list Pelé’s goal totals anywhere from around 650 in league matches to somewhere near 1,300 in all matches — some against low-level competition.

After Olympic bronze, Gilles and Poirier treat world championships as a celebration

Daniel Rainbird, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 4:29 PM CDT

Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier won't call it a last dance. But after 15 years and an Olympic medal, next week's world figure skating championships look a lot like a victory lap.

The Canadian ice dancers will arrive in Prague after winning bronze with a euphoric free skate at last month's Milan Cortina Games, the culmination of a career built slowly — and on their own terms.

"We really want to treat this event as a celebration of our skating," Poirier said. "The Olympics was really the big goal for the season, and we've accomplished that."

While some teams — including defending champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the U.S. — will skip the post-Milan worlds, Gilles and Poirier chose to give fans, old and new, one more chance to see this season's programs.

Brayden Schenn had seen the highlights.

The veteran centre knew all about a peach-fuzzed New York Islanders defenceman making waves in a jaw-dropping rookie season — from afar.

Acquired by the club ahead of the NHL trade deadline, Schenn now gets a front-row seat.

Matthew Schaefer, a happy-go-lucky teenager with a wide smile and engaging personality, has burst on the scene with an effortless skating stride, bullet shot and elite feel for the game.

The Hockey Hall of Fame expects to keep the US Olympic gold medal-winning pucks

The Associated Press 3 minute read Updated: 7:05 AM CDT

TORONTO (AP) — The Hockey Hall of Fame says the pucks used to score the gold medal-winning men’s and women’s goals at the Milan Cortina Olympics are part of its permanent collection after being donated by the International Ice Hockey Federation.

The Hall released a statement about its artifacts from the Games on Wednesday, a day after Jack Hughes, who scored the golden goal in overtime for the U.S. men, told ESPN he wanted the puck so he could give it to his father, Jim.

“These artifacts are preserved, exhibited and shared with fans worldwide through our museum and international outreach programs, ensuring that defining Olympic and World Championship moments remain protected and accessible to the global hockey community,” the Hall said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. “We hold tremendous respect for the men and women who create these unforgettable moments on the ice, and we remain committed to preserving their achievements in a manner that is responsible, secure and accessible to fans everywhere.”

The U.S. swept men's, women's and Paralympic sled hockey gold, beating Canada in each final to win all three for the first time in the same year. Megan Keller scored the women's golden goal, also in OT, and that puck is similarly enshrined.

Rookie Savoie’s surge earns him spot alongside McDavid on Oilers’ top line

EDMONTON - Overlooked amid the Edmonton Oilers’ erratic season has been the steady, albeit unspectacular, performance of rookie forward Matt Savoie.

The 22-year-old native of St. Albert, a bedroom community abutting Edmonton’s northwest, has been moved around various lines as head coach Kris Knoblauch searches for consistent and effective combinations. Recently, however, the speedy, sometimes abrasive Savoie has found a fit on the top line with Connor McDavid and Zach Hyman.

McDavid, whose pace can be a challenge for linemates, said he has been impressed by the youngster.

“I just noticed the energy he’s playing with, lots of jump, lots of juice, keeping lots of pucks alive, getting in on the forecheck and retrieving pucks. It’s been impressive,” McDavid said. “The little things he does so well, like a dog on a bone. Super, super skilled.”

Crosby makes productive return to Penguins’ lineup following injury during Olympics

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Sidney Crosby is back.

The Pittsburgh Penguins' captain was productive almost immediately in his return to the lineup Wednesday night after missing nearly a month with a lower-body injury sustained while competing for Canada at the Milan Cortina Olympics.

Crosby had a goal and an assist, but it wasn't enough as the Penguins lost 6-5 in overtime to the Metropolitan Division-leading Carolina Hurricanes.

But, the game was a valuable step for the team’s scoring leader.

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 11:44 AM CDT

DUNEDIN - Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios won't be ready for Opening Day next week due to a stress fracture in his right elbow, manager John Schneider said Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters at the team's spring training complex, Schneider said a recent in-person meeting with surgeon and elbow specialist Dr. Keith Meister yielded a "relatively good report."

"He does have a stress fracture in the right elbow but is still symptom-free," he said. "I think he'll take a couple days down from throwing and then get back after it. Hopefully it's not too long, as long as he's feeling good, and (he'll) get back on the mound fairly soon.

"But he won't be ready to start the season."

WNBA and players union have reached an agreement in principle on a transformational new CBA

Doug Feinberg, The Associated Press 4 minute read Updated: 7:07 AM CDT

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA will have its first million dollar players after the league and its players’ union reached a deal in principle on a transformational new collective bargaining agreement early Wednesday morning.

Specifics still need to be finalized over the next few weeks as lawyers on both sides work on the new CBA. A term sheet should be done in the next day or two. It will then need to be ratified by the players and then approved by the league’s Board of Governors.

“I just want to say we have aligned on key elements of a new collective bargaining agreement together. We still need to finalize a formal term sheet, but the progress made in these discussions marks a transformative step forward for players and the league,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said. “It underscores a shared commitment to the continued growth of the game. So, we’ll share additional details as they become available.”

The landmark deal is expected to greatly increase player salaries, with top stars potentially making a supermax of $1.4 million in the first year, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

‘He’s changed his whole mindset’: Pettersson’s work shines in Vancouver Canucks’ win

VANCOUVER - Elias Pettersson has been working on his game.

It's been a difficult season for the star centre and his Vancouver Canucks, one marred by a slew of unexpected setbacks and sharp criticism for the team's highest-paid player.

Amid the noise and disappointment, Pettersson has been trying to simplify — and shoot more.

The mindset paid off on Tuesday with a pair of first-period power-play goals that helped the Canucks to a 5-2 victory over the Florida Panthers.
