Grand Slam of Curling continues to tweak shootout, extra end experiment

Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 11:53 AM CST

The Grand Slam of Curling continues to tinker with a draw-to-the-button shootout to replace extra ends, but the latter is making a comeback in Saskatoon this week.

A shootout was implemented for the preliminary round and tiebreakers at the season-opening AMJ Masters in September, and then expanded to include playoffs in October's Co-op Tour Challenge and November's Kioti GSOC Tahoe.

The change produced dramatic moments in big games. Swedish skip Anna Hasselborg drew to the button in a women's semifinal in the Tour Challenge, but Canada's Rachel Homan covered the pinhole to advance in Nisku, Alta.

Scotland's Bruce Mouat outdrew Canada's Matt Dunstone by three millimetres to take the men's final in Tahoe.

Blue Bombers re-sign star receiver Demski, veteran defensive back Nichols

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 3:50 PM CST

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-signed two big parts of their team Thursday, signing Canadian receiver Nic Demski to a two-year deal and veteran American defensive back Deatrick Nichols to a one-year extension.

Both players were set to become free agents in February.

Demski, who turned 32 on Sunday, had 67 receptions for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns last season. It was his third straight campaign hitting the 1,000-yard mark.

The Winnipeg native was named to the West Division all-star team for a fifth straight year.

NASCAR mourns the loss of Greg Biffle, family in tragic plane crash in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Greg Biffle was picked by NASCAR as one of its top 75 drivers in history. He was a Hall of Fame nominee for the stock car series and he drove for 18 years at the top of the sport.

Yet for all the races and the handful of memorable wins, he is perhaps best remembered for his selfless and tireless work helping others as a helicopter pilot supplying aid a year ago in the devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene.

Biffle loved flying and he was in the air again Thursday, aboard a small jet that crashed at the Statesville airport north of Charlotte, authorities said. He was believed to be among seven people killed, including his wife and two children. He was 55.

“This tragedy has left all of our families heartbroken beyond words,” said a joint statement released on behalf of the victims. "Greg and Cristina were devoted parents and active philanthropists whose lives were centered around their young son Ryder and Greg’s daughter Emma. Emma was a wonderful human being with a kind soul who was loved by many people. Ryder was an active, curious and infinitely joyful child.”

Canadiens’ Zachary Bolduc finally breaks through at the Bell Centre

Daniel Rainbird, The Canadian Press 5 minute read 4:00 AM CST

MONTREAL - Zachary Bolduc imagined he’d score plenty of goals in front of friends and family when the Canadiens traded for him this summer.

What he probably didn’t envision was that it would take 19 games to bury his first at home.

Bolduc finally delivered his Bell Centre moment Thursday night, scoring twice in a 4-1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

“It’s a privilege to play here,” said the 22-year-old from Trois-Rivières, Que. "I grew up as a fan, and I dreamt of playing for this team, and now I have the chance to play here. To score that first goal, it's quite special."

Rasmus Andersson continues to shine for Flames despite uncertain future in Calgary

Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press 4 minute read 5:30 AM CST

CALGARY - Rasmus Andersson continues to be a difference maker for the Calgary Flames amid external noise about his contract status.

The Swedish defenceman produced NHL career assists 200 to 202 — all in a Flames jersey — in Calgary's 4-2 win over the visiting Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

The 29-year-old, who is eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer, has provided value both on and off the ice if the 14-17-4 Flames decide they are sellers before or at the NHL trade deadline March 6.

Andersson generated the primary assist on Calgary's first three goals Thursday before Mikael Backlund's empty-netter for the captain's second of the night.

‘Time goes so quick’: Senators’ Stutzle enjoyed ride to 400th career game, eyes more

Lisa Wallace, The Canadian Press 4 minute read 5:00 AM CST

OTTAWA - At 23 years of age, the last thing Tim Stutzle should be feeling is old, but that’s what the Ottawa Senators star centre said he felt after playing his 400th game.

Stutzle had a solid performance picking up an assist in the Senators' 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins to give him 360 career points (130 goals, 230 assists).

His 360 points are the fourth most at the time of a players 400th game with the Senators behind only Jason Spezza (416), Alexei Yashin (376) and Dany Heatley (362).

“Time goes so quick,” said Stutzle. “It’s been awesome so far and hopefully I can play many more with this group of guys. And, yeah, it’s been special so far.”

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brandon Ingram scored 29 points, Scottie Barnes added 24 and the Toronto Raptors beat the slumping Milwaukee Bucks 111-105 on Thursday night.

The Raptors have back-to-back road victories to bounce back from a four-game skid. They won 106-96 at Miami on Monday night.

Milwaukee played a fifth straight game without Giannis Antetokounmpo as the two-time MVP recovers from a right calf strain. The Bucks also were missing Kyle Kuzma due to an illness. Toronto didn’t have RJ Barrett (knee sprain) or Jakob Poeltl (lower back).

The Bucks have lost 12 of their last 15. They will be away from home for 11 of their next 14 contests, including five straight starting Sunday and running through Dec. 29.

Canadian ‘keeper Dayne St. Clair says goodbye to Minnesota, reportedly joining Miami

Canadian Dayne St. Clair, the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, has said farewell to Minnesota United with MLS champion Inter Miami his reported destination.

St. Clair is out of contract with Minnesota, which announced in late November that it was in contract negotiations with the 28-year-old from Pickering, Ont.

It appears those talks are over with St. Clair taking to social media this week to bid farewell to Minnesota.

"Representing this community on and off the field has been a true joy and although we never lifted a trophy together, I hope I made you proud," he wrote.

Toronto FC happy to land Pittsburgh defender Jackson Gilman in MLS SuperDraft

Neil Davidson, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:20 PM CST

TORONTO - Toronto FC had just one pick in Thursday's MLS SuperDraft but left happy after taking Pitt defender Jackson Gilman in the second round.

Gilman played 75 games over his four seasons at Pittsburgh, starting 74, with two goals and seven assists. The five-foot-11, 174-pound senior from Schwenksville, Pa., captained the Panthers for three seasons.

"There's a lot to like, to be honest," said Toronto technical director Sean Rubio. "A four-year starter at a top program. Played as a freshman on a team that went to the (NCAA) College Cup final four as a starter. To be a captain, starting in your sophomore season, for that big of a school, there's something to be said about that.

"The soccer IQ for me is off the charts," he added. "Just a really smart footballer, makes really good decisions. He's played everywhere across the backline. I think he could even potentially play in midfield, although he has not done that any time recently."
