Undav scores twice, saves Germany with 2-1 World Cup win over Ivory Coast

Lexie Linderman, The Associated Press 2 minute read Updated: 5:33 PM CDT

TORONTO (AP) — Deniz Undav scored twice after being subbed on in the second half as Germany defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 on Saturday and clinched a spot in the knockout phase at the World Cup.

Four minutes into stoppage time, Undav received a pass from Felix Nmecha in front of the net and rifled it past Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana to give the Germans a comeback win.

Undav’s first goal of the match came after Nadiem Amiri sent in a long ball – that striker Kai Havertz let pass him by – onto the boot of Undav, who slammed it into the back of the net at the 68th minute. Both Amiri and Undav had subbed on eight minutes earlier.

Four-time champion Germany has come back from disappointing group stage exits in 2018 and 2022, while Ivory Coast is still searching for its first knockout stage appearance and could still qualify. The last time Germany got past the group stage it won the tournament in 2014.

Carson Kelly has grand slam and career-high 6 RBIs as Cubs rout Blue Jays 16-2

Matt Carlson, The Associated Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 6:33 PM CDT

CHICAGO (AP) — Carson Kelly hit his second career grand slam in Chicago’s seven-run first inning and finished with a career-high six RBIs as the Cubs routed the Toronto Blue Jays 16-2 on Friday.

Pete Crow-Armstrong had three singles, an RBI and walked twice to extend his career-high on-base streak to 22 games, helping the Cubs win for the sixth time in eight games. Chicago's center fielder is batting .409 during that stretch.

Justin Dean, recalled from Triple-A before the game, drove in three runs in Chicago's five-run seventh with a triple — his first career hit — after taking over for Crow-Armstrong in center in the top of the inning.

The Cubs have scored seven or more runs in an inning in consecutive games for the first time since July 5-6, 2001, and done it at Wrigley Field for the first time since May 7-8, 1984.

Dinwiddie focused on winning — not facing his former team — as Redblacks host Argos

Lisa Wallace, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 3:35 PM CDT

OTTAWA - Ryan Dinwiddie is downplaying the significance of facing his former team, even as the Ottawa Redblacks prepare to face the Toronto Argonauts for the first time since his major off-season move.

Dinwiddie left Toronto after leading the franchise to two Grey Cup championships, taking over as head coach in Ottawa while adding the title of general manager.

The Redblacks (0-1) dropped their season opener 29-21 to the Edmonton Elks in his first game in charge, and Dinwiddie says his only focus is on ensuring his team improves on its last performance.

“I’m getting this question all of the time and it’s not that big of a deal for me,” Dinwiddie said. “I understand it’s my ex-team and I know a lot of people on that side of the building, but I’m a Redblack. That’s where I'm at, that’s where my feet are.

What is the ‘green whistle’ Canadian player Ismael Koné was given after FIFA injury?

Monique Kasonga, The Canadian Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 3:24 PM CDT

When Canadian midfielder Ismael Koné was taken off the field on a stretcher during Canada's World Cup match against Qatar on Thursday, photos showed him inhaling from a small green device, prompting many fans to wonder what it was.

Team Canada officials confirmed the inhaler to be Penthrox, also known as methoxyflurane, a fast-acting, non-opioid pain medication that is self-administered for short-term pain relief. It is commonly known as the "green whistle."

One of the drug's key features is that it's administered by the patient directly: if a patient can't hold the device themselves, the drug can't be used, said Dr. Paul Winston, a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation based in British Columbia.

"The nice thing about Penthrox is you don't overdo it, right? So if the person ends up saying, 'Hey, I'm OK,' they can stop puffing, or if the pain isn't controlled, then they have time to administer the heavier medications that they may need to do," Winston said.

Elks embrace rain ahead of home opener against Alouettes

John Korobanik, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 3:17 PM CDT

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Elks moved back into the familiar confines of Commonwealth Stadium this week, but they still couldn’t escape the rain that has been their almost constant companion since early in training camp.

It is the rain, which is forecast for their home opener Saturday, that the Elks feel could give them an advantage against the unbeaten Montreal Alouettes.

“Our preseason game was in the rain, our first regular season game was in the rain, we practice in the rain a bunch,” said cornerback JJ Ross. “Obviously it changes the offensive game plan a bit, but since we’ve done it so much I think it’s an advantage for us.”

Quarterback Cody Fajardo directed the Elks to a 29-21 rain-drenched win in Ottawa two weeks ago, their first season-opening win since 2019. Playing in the rain won’t be an issue, he said.

Former Lions star running back Millington rushes into Canadian Football Hall of Fame

The Canadian Press 2 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 2:35 PM CDT

HAMILTON - Former B.C. Lions running back Sean Millington is headed to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame after being named Friday to its 2026 class.

Millington learned of the honour earlier this week when the Lions surprised him with the news before he addressed the team at practice.

"I'm elated, overjoyed, overwhelmed, grateful, blessed and amazed. It's such a shock and something you obviously think about every year. You hear who is going in and do the relative rankings in your head," said Millington. "You think maybe someday it might be nice. When it finally does happen, you can't believe it. "

The first overall pick in the 1990 CFL draft rushed for 6,086 yards and scored 87 touchdowns over a 13-season career with B.C., Edmonton, Winnipeg and Toronto.

Big World Cup win raises odds of Team Canada knockout matches in Vancouver

The Canadian Press 4 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 5:58 PM CDT

VANCOUVER - Canada's resounding World Cup win over Qatar doesn't just put the team in the driver's seat to advance in the tournament for the first time — it raises the prospect of even more Team Canada action in Vancouver.

If Canada wins or draws against Switzerland at BC Place next Wednesday, it means the stadium will also host a knockout match for the home side on July 2.

And if they win again, BC Place would also host Team Canada on July 7 in the round of 16.

Those matches could be among the biggest sporting events Vancouver has ever hosted on the international stage, alongside the 2010 Olympic gold medal hockey matches — although soccer's truly global scale would potentially give them even more reach.

Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber rejoins team, nearing a return to action, manager says

Matt Carlson, The Associated Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 1:23 PM CDT

CHICAGO (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Shane Bieber rejoined the team on Friday and could be activated from the injured list in the next few days, manager John Schneider said.

Bieber, the 2020 AL Cy Young Award winner, hasn’t pitched this season. He was placed on the 15-day injured list in March with elbow inflammation and later transferred to the 60-day IL.

The 31-year-old Bieber just completed a five-game rehab stint with a start for Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday. Bieber allowed five runs and 11 baserunners in five-plus innings, throwing 80 pitches with his velocity reaching 93 mph.

After joining the team in Chicago, Bieber is to throw a side session at Wrigley Field on Saturday and could be activated shortly afterward, possibly rejoining Toronto’s depleted rotation on Monday.

Driver arrested in Vancouver after police chase and crash near World Cup fans

The Canadian Press 1 minute read Yesterday at 12:36 PM CDT

VANCOUVER - Vancouver police say they arrested a prohibited driver who crashed his car while trying to flee officers, in an incident that unfolded close to World Cup fans in the downtown core on Thursday.

The incident was captured on social media videos that show a black Tesla crashed into a tree, a man lying on the ground being cuffed, and officers with weapons drawn.

Police say the vehicle had been "pinged" for having inactive insurance and being operated by a prohibited driver, and when they tried to stop the car, the driver fled through an underground parking lot then crashed as it emerged at Hornby and Robson streets.

They say the man in his 30s was taken into custody without further incident, and "numerous charges will be recommended."

Elks president says CFL club still recovering from ‘disaster’ of name change

John Korobanik, The Canadian Press 2 minute read Yesterday at 12:12 PM CDT

EDMONTON - As the Edmonton Elks prepare for their home opener Saturday, team president Chris Morris says the fallout from the club's 2021 name change remains one of the biggest obstacles in rebuilding support among fans.

Morris, who spent 14 seasons on Edmonton's offensive line and won three Grey Cups with the club, said the franchise continues to deal with fallout from its 2021 name change.

"It was a disaster in so many ways," Morris said of the transition from the Eskimos to the Elks.

The club changed its name after years of criticism from Inuit leaders and organizations who said the former name was offensive and outdated. The move came amid broader pressure on sports teams to abandon names viewed as racist or stereotypical.

Three-time Stanley Cup winner Jonathan Toews ends his NHL career as a Winnipeg Jet

WINNIPEG - Jonathan Toews won three Stanley Cups, two Olympic gold medals, a world hockey championship and two world junior championships — not to mention a long list of individual honours, including the Conn Smythe and Selke trophies.

So as Toews announced his retirement Friday to bring the curtain down on a decorated NHL career, he was asked if there were any accomplishments missing from his resume.

“No, I want to sit here and say I have no regrets,” Toews said before about 100 invited guests at the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex. “I did the best that I could with what I knew at the time. That’s part of the journey. It’s not always going to be perfect.

"All in all, if someone told me when I was getting drafted that we would be standing here today and this is how my career would go out, I would have signed up for that 100 times over."
