Nelly Korda wins the season opener on the LPGA without having to hit a shot on Sunday

The Associated Press 4 minute read Yesterday at 4:11 PM CST

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Nelly Korda won for the first time in 14 months without having to hit a shot Sunday when the LPGA Tour reduced the season-opening Tournament of Champions to 54 holes because of wind and cold that led officials to deem Lake Nona unsuitable for a final round.

Korda won seven times in 2024 and was shut out in 2025. Now the American is a winner again with a most awkward start to the LPGA season.

She won with an 8-under 64 on Saturday, an astonishing round that was roughly nine shots better than the field average in bitter cold and gusts that approached 40 mph. Korda said it was among the best three rounds she ever played.

She finished just before the LPGA halted the third round when wind blew Youmin Hwang's golf ball off the 17th green. The concern was because the final two holes were the most exposed on the course.

Barry Trotz is retiring as Predators general manager once a successor is found

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Barry Trotz is retiring as general manager of the Nashville Predators after just under three years on the job but will stay on through the March 6 NHL trade deadline and until a successor is found, playing a role in that process.

Trotz, 63, said Monday he informed majority owner Bill Haslam in December that he intended to step away when his contract expired at the end of the 2026-27 season. The decision is not health-related, and Trotz is expected to remain with the organization as an adviser through that time.

“After some discussion, we elected to begin a search for my replacement now, but I am happy to work in my current role until we make a new hire, however long that might be," Trotz said.

Haslam aims to have a new GM in place by the draft in late June. He downplayed any disagreement between ownership and Trotz that led to this plan.

NEW YORK - Edmonton Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard has been named the NHL’s third star of the month.

Bouchard topped all defencemen and ranked fourth among all skaters with 23 (eight goals, 15 assists) in 15 games to guide the Oilers to an 8-5-2 January.

Only two blueliners in the past 33 years have compiled more points in a single calendar month: Nashville's Roman Josi with 28 points in March 2022 and Colorado's Cale Makar with 25 points in November 2023.

Tampa Bay Lightning right-wing Nikita Kucherov and Boston Bruins right-wing David Pastrnak were named the first and second stars.

‘Gold or bust’: U.S. ready for another men’s hockey test at Winter Olympics

Joshua Clipperton, The Canadian Press 5 minute read Yesterday at 6:00 AM CST

Bill Guerin simply stated the quiet part out loud.

With the NHL returning to the Olympics for the first time in 12 years, the silver medallist at the 2002 Games for the United States — and now his country's general manager — has been tabbed with getting the Stars and Stripes back atop the field at a best-on-best tournament.

Nothing short of gold in Italy will do.

"We have to win," Guerin told NHL.com in August. "We have to win another one of these."

Q&A: Virtue and Moir reflect on life after skating, Olympic gold, future of ice dance

Daniel Rainbird, The Canadian Press 10 minute read Yesterday at 5:00 AM CST

It’s hard to believe, but eight years have passed since Canadian icons Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir skated to Olympic gold with their mesmerizing “Moulin Rouge” performance.

The most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history, Virtue and Moir captured five medals (three gold, two silver) across three Winter Games from 2010 to 2018.

After 24 years as partners, they officially retired in 2019 and have since taken different paths, with Virtue moving into business and Moir building a coaching academy.

Canada’s favourite couple-that-isn’t-a-couple — in partnership with OLG’s Quest for Gold program — reflected on life after competition, the thrill of Olympic gold and the future of ice dance amid this season’s judging controversy.

Madeline Schizas’s McMaster roommates share what it’s like to live with an Olympian

Fatima Raza, The Canadian Press 3 minute read Yesterday at 5:00 AM CST

When Madeline Schizas secured her spot in the Olympics, she didn't think her roommates from McMaster University would want to tag along.

The 22-year-old from Oakville, Ont., made her Olympic debut at the Beijing Games in 2022, where she helped Canada to a fourth-place finish in the team event. This year, she earned Canada’s lone spot in women's competition at February’s Milan Cortina Games.

Just weeks before she was set to fly out for Milan, roommates Jenna Coulter and Shayla McKeown decided to join her in her travels.

"It's not cheap to go to Italy during the Olympics, so they went back and forth," Schizas said. "We're all really excited."

OTTAWA - Linus Ullmark’s first start since stepping away for a personal leave of absence was never going to be just another game.

From the opening puck drop to the final horn, the veteran goaltender battled more than just the opposition, channelling a gamut of emotions into an impressive 26-save performance in a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils Saturday night that underscored both his resilience and his importance in the crease.

The Ottawa Senators netminder made his first start since taking a leave on Dec. 28. In a recent interview, Ullmark shared that he was dealing with mental health issues and had experienced anxiety during his last appearance against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Dec. 27.

“It felt like I’ve been gone for so long that there was an excitement,” admitted Ullmark. “I was nervous, which I haven’t been in a long time, and that’s positive.”

CALGARY - In his finest game in a Calgary Flames uniform, Morgan Frost had an impact all over the ice on Saturday.

Frost had a goal, an assist, five shots, drew two penalties, and went 14-4 in the faceoff circle in leading Calgary to a 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks.

“That's the best I've seen him play since he's been with us,” said Flames' coach Ryan Huska. “The faceoff circle, he had pace to his game, he was setting people up, he's scoring goals. If you get that version of Morgan Frost every day, I think you're pretty happy. He was excellent tonight.”

Frost's big game comes one day after the one-year anniversary of the trade in which Calgary acquired Frost and Joel Farabee, who scored the game-winner, in a trade with the Philadelphia Flyers.

EDMONTON - Tristan Jarry found it difficult to evaluate his own game on Saturday night.

The Edmonton Oilers goalie gave up five goals on 20 shots to the Minnesota Wild before getting the hook in the second period.

“It's tough. The chances we are giving up, some of the shots, they're tough. It's a lot of Grade A's, a lot of breakdowns," Jarry said. "So I think it's tough (for me) to really think about your game at this point. It's a whole team game."

Connor Ingram made seven saves in relief as Minnesota handed Edmonton a 7-3 drubbing.

VANCOUVER - Given a second chance Auston Matthews wasn’t going to miss.

Matthews and William Nylander, returning from injury, scored in a shootout as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 Saturday night to snap a six-game NHL losing streak.

Matthews had a chance to win the game with 1:54 remaining in the three-on-three overtime when he was awarded a penalty shot after Conor Garland was called for hooking.

Toronto called a timeout to allow Matthews to catch his breath, then the Leafs' centre skated in from the right wing, cut through the crease and tried to score on a forehand but was stopped by Vancouver goaltender Nikita Tolopilo.

Joel Eriksson Ek, Mats Zuccarello and Brock Faber also had a goal and an assist apiece for Minnesota (32-14-10).

Goals from Kirill Kaprizov, Vladimir Tarasenko and Tyler Pitlick rounded out the scoring for the Wild, while Jesper Wallstedt stopped 39 of the 42 shots he faced.

NHL roundup: Surging Penguins win sixth straight, edge Rangers 6-5

The Associated Press 10 minute read Updated: Yesterday at 12:31 AM CST

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Anthony Mantha and Noel Acciari scored two goals apiece, and the surging Pittsburgh Penguins held off the New York Rangers 6-5 on Saturday for their sixth straight NHL victory.

Mantha and Acciari beat Jonathan Quick twice in a span of just over three minutes early in the first period to give the Penguins an early cushion. Mantha made it 3-0 with an easy tap-in in the second period. Acciari and Rickard Rakell scored 20 seconds apart early in the third to push Pittsburgh’s advantage to 5-1 on a night the franchise celebrated the 10th anniversary of the 2016 club that won the Stanley Cup.

Erik Karlsson became the 12th defenceman in NHL history to reach 700 career assists when he picked up the secondary helper on Rakell’s 10th goal of the season 1:20 into the final period. The other 11 defencemen to reach the 700-assist plateau are in the Hall of Fame.

Stuart Skinner improved to 8-1 in his last nine starts but nearly let a four-goal third period get away.
